A lot of older women are like this to young girls whose bodies aren't developed yet. I was made fun of for being too thin, look at my bones, grabbing my wrists, mocked and laughed at by adult women 40-50+ my moms friends when I was only a child. I would be 7-18 and I had a thin child body because I was one!!! I cant imagine doing this to young girls now that I have grown up.

She wasnt the most healthy of sizes herself. We always tried to ignore her since she is still family. I'm guessing that she was just a product of her time. Or she felt bad about herself.

Cindy has aged so gracefully, stunning and I respect her bringing this up and pointing out how wrong this was. It’s easy to go through moments and feel them later, I would also have stood up if told to. Then later felt off and objectified .

When people feel bad about themselves, they sometimes feel empowered when they can belittle others. Oprah has always been insecure about her own looks and weight, so I think she feels good when she can take shots at women who are considered attractive.

I think because she wasn’t talking about grooming in that sense, she was more so saying did you groom her as in change her hair/clothes and her look. Which is normal for modeling agencies to do. I don’t like her but ya

I’m almost positive she means grooming in the sense of teaching a young person to look and act like an adult and to look sexy/sexual. Especially given the context of when they say. She’s asking did you have to groom her to act like an adult as a teen and he says no we just had to get her to believe she could be a model. Which I think probably involves some grooming because they want her to be sexy.

I'm 5'7" and my doctor said I'm supposed to weigh 130lbs. She was 5'9" and underweight. That's so sad. 😢

I'm 5'7", and at 130lbs I was skinny and bony AF. I also had to pretty much starve myself to get and remain that thin. I had no energy, and then my periods stopped.

Exactly! They are so harmful and just feed eating disorders. The same 3 women could be the same height and weight and same age yet have totally different sizes and body types making them appear to be heavier or slimmer. I know this because I let those damn BMI charts and fat percentages live rent free in my brain my entire life growing up and all it got me was anorexia and morphed into bulimia later starting age 13 and I’m now almost 43 and still living with it. I was a ballerina besides so the ED ran deep in that circle. Those charts are highly discriminatory and damaging and I’ve even heard physicians say that they don’t really go by that anymore it’s not the standard they use to gauge how healthy someone is.
This reminds me of her interview with Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen and asked them about their size and when they deflected the question she hit them with a sarcastic “oh that’s interesting 😐” (no I didn’t watch the video before commenting)
😮 Those girls were so exploited. They are very smart to stick together and stay away from the media. I hope they are happy and living their best lives.

The Olson twin moment kills me. I guess it’s easy to look at beautiful young women and become so overcome with jealousy that you dehumanize them, but all the celebs in this video were constantly being dehumanized already, that’s the whole issue behind EDs, fame, being a girl, etc. Honestly seems like such a lonely life for these gals, despite it seeming like they have it all.

I’m not defending Oprah but let’s take a moment and step into the situation. Cindy was there as an object… being presented as a future model so it was about her looks. Also Oprah has publicly acknowledged her struggle with weight so maybe this is just where Oprah’s mind goes because she’s never been able to be thin. Keep in mind I don’t think Oprah is a good person. Just pointing out the situation of the time vs todays culture.

One of the things that will always blow my mind about this era is how we made teens and 20 year olds out to be the body image goals and standards and that once you were out of your early 20s you aged out of a lot of things including sex appeal while also mistreating and being so passive aggressive to 20 year olds for having a 20 year olds body and metabolism (I know it still happens now but it happened in a very diff way during this time period) I remember on my 22nd birthday crying and being so upset all day because I was “old” and “it was all going down hill from here”
You can clearly see how uncomfortable Cindy was during that interview.

That wasn’t a nervous smile. I guess people will do anything to sell their story too. Cindy only came forward with this when she decided to write a book. Nobody was checking for her before this.
It was a very different time. What Oprah did was insensitive sure but not criminal. I’m happy that today we find this wrong and hopefully we can continue to change and evolve for the better.

I was young at the time of this interview. I remember seeing it. Yes, Cindy was treated like a piece of meat as we used to say back in the 80’s. What I thought back then was that she was blessed with looks and made tons of money of them. I remember other models were much bigger than her in 1986. Christy Brinkley, Cheryl Tiegs, Elle (The Body), Paulina, and Isabella Rossellini to name a few.

I was going to say something similar. I have my criticisms of Oprah in general, but I think in this case the times were just different. And she generally talked about weight a lot, because that was her journey so I felt like she was basically like an aunt partially projecting, but not in a way where she was trying to be demeaning.
