In today's video, we are looking at how to use the EQ built into the Boss GX-100. The Boss GX-100 has some great sounding Eq effects blocks so why not use them to get rid of the frequencies you just don't need!
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs. - Hudba
The high roll off is to me the biggest thing that people ignore on modelers and then say they're fizzy. Great info.
EQ is your best friend when it comes to modelers
waiting for my boss gx100 for months now. cant wait to try out the studio rats patches. great tips thanks again.
Your channel for the GX 100 was a life saver. Thanks
Much more clarity after the EQ tweak--very nice!
Thank you so much for the EQ tips on the Boss GX100. It has definitely improved my overall sound with this unit!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is such a lifesaver and the general principles can be applied to almost any rig.
You absolutely smashed it with you playing on this Paul! Great video and informative content as always 👍🎸🔥
Cheers DSS!
Just bought and waiting for the GX-100 to arrive! I bought it largely based on the tones in your pack (looking forward to buying your pack once my unit arrives)!
This technique should be learned by all musicians.
Awesome video and playing, thank you! Very useful informations!
Awesome video. I tend to do similar but I rarely A/B the two like you have. And yeah, the final sound definitely sounds punchier and will sit way better in a mix.
You're a hell of a player... I wanted to thank you, I've gotten more info from your GX vids than from Boss (Never got a reply from them). Unfortunately it doesn't work for me using the 4cm with any of my amps, so it's on the shelf and I'm back to the GT-8 for now... So Thank you
Hi Paul, Selva here from India..just discoverd your channel and man your knowledge on the gear and approach to tone shaping is out of the world. I have learnt a lot in the last two days just watching few of these videos. I am basically an amp guy myself and i did try my hands on processor but then I could never get around the fizz or the the sound being too sterile which put me off. Now looking at it feels like I was not educated enough on tone shaping or working with a processor. I recently picked the Bluguitar Iridium (thats a killer amp in pedal platform) and have a huge pedal board but it wouldnt hurt having this Boss GX-100 for places where I dont have to carry my entire gear. Thanks, great channel indeed.
I find all of these videos super useful - even if you arent using this exact piece of kit, the approach here is a great way to think of your tone and sculpt it for your exact purpose.
Cheers Phil, I’m glad you get something out of the vids.
This is a great video. People like myself who are old school guitar players and play through tube amps and huge pedalboards need to know this. Because this unit DOES sound great. But there is that little something going on that you can't put your finger on...
Well you just put my finger on it and now I feel like I could take this lightweight little board to a gig and sound great. I can't even count the times I've lugged a huge 412 and 100 watt tube head to outdoor gigs. Thank you Paul. You are a true tone master 🤘🏻🤘🏻
What I love about the Boss EQ-200 and the GT/GX products is that you can have 4 EQs in one chain. So I like to have two after the OD pedals but before the amp, and the other two after the amp and modulation, but before the delay/reverb. With each pair of two, I set one to enhance the low end, and one for the high end frequencies. That way I can increase or decrease the frequencies as needed for each guitar/amp combination I am using, and for any pedal combinations before or after the amp as well.
I appreciate these videos, thank you! Still have a ways to go learning what I can do with this pedalboard. Putting this as a global eq just so I don't have to manually put in every patch and have more CPU room to add other effects.
The GX100 is fabulous. This eq hack it very useful.. Cheers Mate
Great lesson - Just learnt something new for recording guitar - Cheers! 👍🏻
Anytime Simon
Legend, thanks for this recommendation!! God bless you mate
Anytime Anderson.
You sir, are a genius! Thank you
This is actually a good idea to do on the Boss IR-200. I feel like the Brit amp model sounds a bit... Boxy and fizzy? At the same time. I'm having a hard time dialing in a tone I'm satisfied with. EQ is the next step.
Hey Paul I love all your videos and thank you for all your playing and tutorials 🙏🏼 I had a question whether you tweak the global eq or not? Maybe you've addressed this in an older video but I missed it if you have already. Thank you
Wanted to say thanks for your GX-100 videos, I was getting frustrated with the tones with a Fender Princeton and now a frfr speaker until I understood the importance of eq-ing “corrections” I’m looking into purchasing your Boss GX-100 presets
Great to hear
Great informative video especially for a novice like me
Thank's for the fantastic video! I usually put the eq after the block cabinet and not before.. for you .it's the same ? Tks for the answer
Nice technique. I'll try it on my Zoom G6.
Great video good thank you 👍 one question can you do global settings per guitar that roll off the highs and lows on the gx100? then per patch use the PEQ to fine tune the sound?
Do you remember how you were running this? Like for the video? I'm thinking of diving into this world. I tried with a fractal FM3 but couldn't understand how to make it sound good "Live" . Through headphones it sounded great. But through a PA it didn't sound very good at all to my ears. Plus, I wanna say you're a great player and I just enjoy coming to these videos to listen to the riffs. Anyway this is a year ago so, maybe you don't even use this product anymore. I'm torn between this or a Line 6 HX Stomp or a helix LT. But don't wanna get frustrated trying to replace an amp. So ease of use is important lol.
Sooo useful video actually all of your gx 100 videos , is ot possible for you to make a quick video to explain how to tweak the global eq settings in boss gx 100 ??? Thanks in advance and keep the good work!!!
i agree. i am new to the gx100. have been using line6 products forever. learned some tricks on there over the years. 1 was decreasing the 3k on global setting. And another was for a specific cab setting for better tone. since the gx100 is still kinda new i havent found awhole lot of tips like that yet on youtube. it would be great if there was a series of videos for "life hacks" on the 100
COOL!
The P EQ seems to “remove the blanket draped over the cabinet” as well. Thx Paul!
Thank you :) How to connect the GX 100 live, when you want to play stereo through the PA and mono to a Guitar Amp?
Hello Paul, I just Buy the GX-100, and thanks for all the information that you share. Is excellent!
Just I have a question.
How can assing the Wah, on the chain, for use in a solo of the one song only?
Please,
Thanks, and, "saludos" from México.!
Should I leave the global eq flat if I am using the PEQ in the patch?
Can you make a video please on how to use looper in boss gx100
Thanks a lot
The problem of the gx and gt1000 is the 'slope' of the hi and low cut,,is too sweet( 3db for ottave!), in a live situation at very loud volume i use 4 eq.I think your patch, at loud volume ,is very boomy and fizzy. In the studio is very very very different.
First of all, thank you for your clear explanation.
I have also had the GX-100 for a while, but first used it mainly as an effects processor together with a tube amplifier: 4 cable method.
Lately I've been playing via headphones via my MacBook pro model 2021. And then using the amps and the speaker simulation in the Gx-100.
However, I connected these via USB. Then I have a stereo signal with effect and a "stereo" without signal treatment. In your video and also in other videos I see that you use the line-out on the left and right. Are there any advantages compared to USB use? Because then the analogue-to-digital conversion takes place in the audio interface. Compared to the USB method, the signal is then converted twice. Can you explain the advantage of one method versus the other?
You are better running it using USB. Whether any of us could hear the difference is another matter. Cheers for the comment
Would you use this same high cut for live gigging, or only for recording? My normal high cut is at 8k and I've always been scared to go lower, but I do like the way this sounds. Very natural... it lets the mids come through more which sounds... "alive" I guess is the best word for it.
Hi Dan, yes I’d use it live.
Hey Paul! I'm running my gx100 through the power amp of a katana MK2 100 with IRs off. GX output setting is on katana 100 return. Do these EQ settings still apply?
Awesome but I have a couple of questions? Were the X mod eqs set flat and was the global eq on thanks!?
Do you set the GX in front of a amp are in the effectsloop are strait in a mixer are speaker box.
Suppose you already have a peq in the chain being used for tone shaping?
Sir , whtas the interface you use for recording? I’m facing a problem with GT1000 core or GX100 volume were very low when I direct into the monitor, just wondering if I put a interface between then , it may help for the volume?
I don’t like less choice of cans and global eq for high and low cut I like to do it at end of chain on the cab speakers and cabs are all different but u do need more than 12.5 k on highs especially on high gain and when you play higher than 12 th fret if they changed that added some cabs and heads and a intelligent gate especially on input some pedals like jhs love this could have be a fractal kemper killer and outsold line6
Hi, any advice on why my GX100 doesn’t sound so good on my Nextone amp? Tried 4 cable etc and output to 112 valve amp setting but is still sounds harsh, acoustic sim is unusable? Cheers
Hi, what about the global EQ for a good DI sound? Thank you
Should the cabinet IR not remove those frequencies, i.e. the frequency curve you mention as an example. If the cabinet IR is actually accurate then surely the eq, in terms of high and low cut, shouldn't matter, if the modelling is accurate? Seems a bit counterintuitive
Great tips, as allways. What monitors do you use for dealing in tones?
I’ve got a pair of Kii 3 monitors
@@TheStudioRats thats expensive monitors!😅 Thanks.
Do you plug it into the front of your amp or the effects return?
Paul Hiya, thank you for all you vids they are hugely helpful, so thank you very much. I have a question please, is it possible to sett all of my patches to the same volume as they fluctuate a lot, bestest, Tony
Yes, absolutely
If I buy the pack that includes this preset, will the tweaks you've done here already be applied to that preset? How about to the other presets in the pack?
I tried rolling off 100k and 5k using the Global EQ. Testing
What pickups are you using on that lovely guitar, Paul?
what about combo amp 200watts and touchscreen led display lightweight like fender twin Reverb master tone call it GT-2000
Hi Paul, great video as always. Just wondering, is the Global EQ on the GX-100 off through all of this, and if not what are its settings. Thanks.
It sounds great, if you dont need the wattage then go for the studio.
@@TheStudioRats Hi didn’t follow that - was asking about the global EQ settings in the featured video. Or maybe I misunderstand?
I love your sounds....i have to admit...even following your videos I can't get the same sound!!! :-) and....my patches are always very loud! how do you set your noise suppressor? thank you in advance
I’ll only use a noise suppressor if absolutely necessary which is very rare.
@@TheStudioRats wow! That's amazing how you can avoid the noise suppressor....I'll give it another try...thanks for replying and thank you for your videos! I love you green super strat!!!
@alcortinovis cheers. Guitars a noisy especially with overdrive, I try to embrace it, you can’t hear the noise in the mix or when you play.
Paul....is this tweaked EQ effect included in the patches available for purchase ?....it certainly makes a difference.
No it’s not, it’s really a personal preference how much low and high cut you would want to dial in.
Hello Paul cool Sounds that you make with the gx.
Would the Gx100 sound also good in 4 Cable Method, have you tried?
I haven’t tried but yes it would work great.
Hi Paul, Is there any reason not to do general tone shaping in the global EQ and eq each amp to taste?
I would only use the global eq if I was at a gig and needed to boost or cut everything.
I bought the Pack, I use a Telecaster and I do find it very Fizzy can you do a lesson for Tele/ Single Coils users please?
Great videos many thanks.
High cut is your friend
@@TheStudioRats aw gee sus, ole mervyn as a guitarist you really should be able to feel and hear what isn't right eh.
@@Wooburnmusic I’m sorry you might need to explain that comment, I don’t understand.
@@TheStudioRats exactly.
If you watched the video Rick you’ll see that I used a high cut. If a patch sounds too harsh with a telecaster you can use a high cut. I still don’t understand your comment
Hey Paul, I struggle with my tones on the gx 100. I use the 4CM on my older Katana 100 but I feel I lose all clarity when doing so. Running the gx 100 direct to the amp leaves me hearing a lot of synthetic sounds with no real definition and using headphones direct into the gx 100 sounds horrible. The funny thing is when I run my guitar into my spark 40 with headphones only, the tones are great, Any ideas what I may be doing wrong with the GX-100? Thanks Paul!
Hi Gary, in my opinion it’s all about the presets and finding the right I.R. I’m not a fan of the presets it comes with, have you tried some others?
@@TheStudioRats hey Paul yeah the presets are not too impressive. I watched your other video you had where I start with the preset and wipe it clean. Do you think the amp speaker loses quite a bit of the dynamics and/or clarity? I had considered moving to some kind of FRFR setup instead of using a guitar amp but every time I hear your guitar tuned into the mix it always sounds great but even direct my sound is just too synthetic 😟. I’ll keep fiddling but thanks for your response Paul! All the best
Do you still use the gx 100 if youve got a kemper / axe fx ? Also how do those hold up to the gx 100 ?
In my opinion the Axe Fx is the best one then GX-100. The GX is great.
Hey Paul , how are you caring on with the Suhr Pete Thorn Signature? Is it a keeper now?
I love it, deffo a keeper.
@@TheStudioRats awesome ! Cheers mate! I will more than likely hold onto mine as well. Glad you made it work the second time around !
I want a Gx 100
High cut before/after amp/cabs is the most important effect to get that terrible digital fizz out of modeller drive sounds
Could you get sounds like Korn and/or Post-Rock?
Yes you can
@@TheStudioRats What would you do to get that sort of sound? For post-rock and "Nu-metal" (Korn, Love and Death.)
Boss GX, Line 6 Pod Go, Zoom G6 ?
GX
Hi there, can I learn which studio monitor are you using ?
I’m using Kii 3
@@TheStudioRats thank you very much. I'll purchase the gx100 presets that's why I asked it, i wanted to get the similar sound that you are hearing. Have a great day and thanks for the presets and instructive videos cheers
why they just do a combo amp 200 watts lightweight with touchscreen led display call you GT -2000
Boss New Katana Mk2 Preset Pack 3 can you make it free for one week for example ? For suscribers :)
Hi Merol, are you a subscriber?
@@TheStudioRats of course , ;) since over 1 year but my fav is katana series , why ? whats the difference ?
It’s just that you normally get a logo by your name and I can’t see it on yours. Thanks for being a sub. Send me a message via the rats website
@@TheStudioRats ok did it salut and more videos about Katana :) it is very helpful
@@TheStudioRats I did send via your web
yucky distortion
Play wonderwall
I find that the 600 to 650hz region is also worth looking at when recording fairly overdriven guitars. It can get quite honky around there. Great vid as always, thank you.
Cheers for the tip Tony.
Hi Paul...so when you re- edit a factory patch/preset...Do you need to write it/overwrite it, to save to listings for future usage??
Im an oldish fart...takes time to use tech!
Thanks
I think there are user banks to save patches
@@TheStudioRatsthanks Paul...most probs you havnt used it since the review..and you obv test a lot of products !
