Circuit of Le Mans 1973 - Matra Onboard

- Although F1 was never on the long circuit, it was once in the Bugatti Circuit which uses part of the long track and it can be seen in the layout presented on the right side. I will present a Le Mans Video later in the year but for now, we have this onboard on a Matra driven in practice by Henri Pescarolo.
This engine was the base for the future F1 Matra engine. Note that its has a higher note than most engines of that era. Enjoy!

Fantastic sound of the Matra V12, compare that to today's hybrids.
Pesca won three Le Mans as he wasn't hard on the car, the start drivers, Cevert and Beltoise always caned the car with the inevitable consequences.
Graham Hill in 72 and Gerard Larrouse in 73/74 were Pescas co drivers .

Easily the best footage ever of the Mulsanne straight. The Matra is one of my all-time favorite Le Mans cars, and this car is a winner as Henri Pescarolo and Gérard Larrousse would carry on to win the 1973 edition of the 24 hour race...

Pour avoir rattrapé et suivi une Matra (F1) j'ai pu voir comme ces autos anciennes etaient instables en piste. La moindre erreur se payait cash à une époque où tous les dispositifs de sécurité midernes n'existaient pas.

What a treat! The old circuit was the best, it was never quite the same after they cut up the mulsanne straight. And the sound of that matra V12 - you wouldn't tire of listening to it, even for 24hrs!

Once I read about Matra tests on Monza, and how everybody was shocked, when Cevert went through Parabolica flat out. They recognized it based on engine sound - now I know what sound it could be. Thank you!

Le V12 MATRA est impressionnant! Et cette phase de pleine charge... quasi 50 secondes!!!! Même le Nascar ou l'Indycar aujourd'hui ne permettent pas ça.
Les Hunaudières sans chicanes, c'est comme expliquer à un gamin ce qu'était Paris - New-York en Concorde. Encore que là, il y a la vidéo...

Sitting at Crowthorne (Kyalami, South African GP & 9 Hour) and listening to that screaming V12 exiting Leeukop and hammering all the way down the main straight going up through the gearbox and then down when breaking for Crowthorne..............

I "watched" this year's race, which is to say, I put it on the DVR to watch later. The modern 24 hours is not what it once was, a true 24 hour race, for example Mr Pescarolo here. Today's racing consists of safety cars, "slow zones" (?) for some reason with endless waving of yellow flags (cleaning the track, removing junked cars along the side of the road, and God know whatever else the organizers dream up.) We're all for safety, of course, but sometimes it rains in the Sarthe, which used to mean wet tires and driving more cautiously. Now of course it's 3 safety cars and endless enjoyment watching the cars go at slow speed, again, and again, and again, lap after lap, after lap, as the minutes and hours tick by. With the DVR now, you simply fast forward! Don't you wish you could do that during the actual race? It's fun watching these old films, especially the Mulsanne, which once was a true, straight blast, with the white-painted tree trunks to make sure you don't hit them (!). Nowadays you can't find a track in Europe that has been emasculated by chicanes and other safety features. And then there's the weird hybrid whistle inside the car as it "shifts" gears. I think today's race organizers truly hate the fans.

L'évolution des environs du circuit est impressionnante, et hélas pas dans le bon sens. A l'époque le circuit était en pleine campagne. Aujourd'hui, à l'exception de la section Mulsante-Arnage qui est encore dans les bois, le circuit est environné par les hangars des zones d'activités. Le charme n'est plus le même. Les tours de piste filmés à bord d'une voiture à l'époque sont relativement nombreux mais c'est la première fois que je vois celui-là.
Un pilote redoutable et un tracé de rêve. Aujourd'hui, c'est que du business ! Merci de votre visite !
