- 60fps upscaled clip of the 1973 Targa Florio (please watch in 1080p60 / 720p60). Original footage is from Archivio Nazionale Cinema d'Impresa (CIAN). I added sounds to the video as the original film was silent.

No terrible music, no awful voice over, no stupid editing. Just amazing cars and fabulous sounds. A great snapshot of a special event. Kudos to you.
Lol. The sound isn't origonal
@@nige5572 real? I think so
@@mistytires3346 When the cars drive by where the camera is you notice the sound doesn't fit.
Still who edited this video did a fantastic work
@@mistytires3346 The description says that the original video was silent.

To the uploader: I recommend getting this sent in to a 4K enhancement expert. They probably won’t even charge you to do it. They’d colour correct it, shadow/highlight/contrast correct it and make it look like it was filmed today. I don’t think I’ve ever seen better, more crisp footage of the TF, so it would be extremely historically relevant to have that done.
OP sourced this from an already digitalized source and an CZcams upload (see description). It is not like he has access to the actual physical film reel so what can be done is pretty limited.
Looks like it has already been pushed pretty hard with color correction tbh
@@deggis4 in this CZcams comment section; people who don't read descriptions
Looks , and sounds fabulous.
AI upscaling is a better option
This footage is stunning. Like it was shot yesterday..
That's why film is still superior than digital. It stands the test of time and can always be remastered to the latest video resolution.
@@SkylineGTRB26 this particular one was resized from a digital copy
Especially when compared with those shity footages from the 1980s
@@user-zv8qg1co4z easy to fix, but no one here is wiling to pay for the hours in post-production needed to tweak those colours, but believe me, in the hands of colourist, this footage will become stunning!
@@ReelLifeCanada tbh once it's digital it'll cost you a minute to do it yourself, then render it
This is amazing footage that truly documents the end of an era. It seems somehow symbolic that the Alfas and Ferraris all failed and it was the modified Porsche Carrera RS that ran out the winner.
The Ferraris with big wings and low ground clearance just looked so out of place on a track with bumpy surfaces and tight corners.
The winged track cars were faster, but unfit to the bumpy roads, and retired in the first laps. The Stratos that arrived second had no problems, but it had at least 25hp power gap (not required in rally races) in respect to the Porsche.
The mix of cars all racing together on a road track is what racing is all about. Never to be seen again.
Yep,hopefully the TT isle of man will never be stopped.
Yep,hopefully the TT isle of man will never be stopped.
You can see it at Goodwood, or Monterey historics but it's not quite the same.
Nothing else was like the Targa, or ever will be again.
thanks to God...
I hope it never does especially with modern machinery at least 30 people won't make it
@@jcoast1 why
I see it every year in Italy, even better cars than in this video.
@@carlosmpsenyorcapitacollon6977 Because it's incredibly dangerous to have races like these. Even in those days.
An event like this could only have been held in Italy and it was the last gasp of the spirit of the Mille Miglia that drove it.
IOM TT.
@@timboness1 Yeah but I was thinking of cars with spectators crossing the track etc.
In Italy ordinary folks drive like that as a matter of course. I’m personally convinced that the lines on the road are actually no more than “ trend” information...
@@shiekyerbooti4068 "trend information" - LOL - I like it.
At the same time they were still racing the Tour de France, a very similar race through narrow country roads and small towns.
Tu chiamale se vuoi... Emozioni..., anni veri, motori come melodie.., altri tempi... 🔝🔝🔝
That little Alfa grille is absolutely adorable
FENOMENALEEE!!!
Incredible to see sports prototypes mixing it with GT and sportscars: the Targa was a seminal event and the World is a poorer place for its absence.
WOW WOW WOW!!!!!!!! Amazing footage. When you remember what the average family car was in those days it would have been incredible to see some of those cars at speed. Remember also that practice in the days leading up to the race was with local traffic. The roads only closed for the actual race.
Frame rate is the best ive ever seen
@@dancearoundtheworld5360 True i didnt even think of that. 50 fps perhaps. They knew what they were doing. My LEICINA super 8 will do 50 but you run out of film in 3 min. This looks like 16mm
What a joy seeing this footage of a long gone era of racing! More please!!!
These streets are more paved than alot of streets I see today in the states, thanks SUV culture
Massive credit to you for posting this. Love
Thank you to the person who shot this video in the first place, you’ve done us all a great service! This footage is amazing!
luckly the European hillclimb championships is like a mini version of this.
WOW!! THANKS so much for providing such a realistic experience.
When this race took place, I was a senior in high school in a small town in California. I had no clue such exciting events occurred. Within a few months of graduating, I was working full-time and still living at home. I had the off chance of working with a guy who was originally from the Santa Barbara area and was a Porsche fanatic (had owned several 356's). Needless to say, I got infected with the Porsche bug; saw a drawing of a 911 (soft rear window) Targa in a magazine and became obsessed with the design/appearance. Because I had a good job and still lived at home I was able to qualify for a bank loan to buy a car. And you wouldn't believe that I found the exact model for sale (1968 911L soft rear window Targa) and bought it, all within four months of graduating from high school. For a few years I didn't even know the Targa was named after the Targa Florio (And it took me at least that long to pay it off).
Anyway Formula60, I very much appreciate the context you have so generously provided. Wish I could have been there, but, this is the next best thing (and Laguna Seca is not so bad). ÷o Oh yeah, still have the 911L.
really awesome story man and happy to hear you still have the 911 😎
When Racecars sounded like Racecars, not like vacuum cleaners
RattleSnake Well the vacuum cleaners are faster.🤗
The vacuum cleaner sound pretty good imo
Not that these cars sounded like that anyway, since the original film was silent!
@@davidgoodchildcouk Maybe the film was silent, but the sounds added are very close to what they actually sounded like. There are lots of videos of most of these cars being driven around nowadays with sounds
@@davidgoodchildcouk yes its dubbed

Start sequence is amazing.. high quality for 1970's Italy. But is gets out of sync in the later part, which is sad. Would be nice to match the brutal noise to a car.. thumbs up for the upload tho
im just happy i get to see something from a time where my dad wasnt born yet
Yeah, I would have put more effort into this video if only i had known this video would get so many views... Sadly now there's nothing I can do to improve the quality.
It's still good.. not many like it
@@formula6033 You can still do an enhanced version and link it in the description. This video seems to be taking off, and the time is ripe. A year from now may be too late. :-) Thank you, regardless. This is a classic.
Someone really took a lot of effort to get all of this with sound. Kudos to them and the uploader!
Bellissimo! Grazie infinite per questo straordinario documento da guardare a bocca aperta dall'inizio alla fine!
This is so cool! Time capsule type stuff !! Thankyou for uploading what a time to be alive in this era

God I love these old cars. Gotta love how fans back then literally were on the street of the course walking their kids lol.
Aussie Cockatoo never should have been
Drazen Budis 😐
Yes! in the steets we see the speed so much better, as a race-track, sooooo dangeres, but very high kick, side by side with the cars!!
Yep, those days when you don't blame every body else for your misfortune. Before the American law suits started.
I would like to thank you on behalf of all petrolheads for your wonderful work. These eyewatering action shots combined with the soundrack that sends chills down the spine are magnificent!
No words can describe my excitement watching this.
Keep up the good work!

Can only be compared with the Isle of Man TT.
But people still have balls to run in TT, but not for the targa florio
@@MrGembelo the problem with targa florio is because the fans were dying and not just the pilots(like group B), in TT most of the time only the pilots get hurt or die
Targa Tasmania
@@user-zv8qg1co4z The whole point of this is that it's NOT safe. If you're going to remove the danger from something dangerous then it just becomes another procession....which is pretty much what all Motorsports is today.
@Elon Musk the entire Irish Road Racing series does. But they are mass start events on public roads rather than the TTs time trial format. The North West 200 is allegedly the fastest motorbike race there is with speeds exceeding 200mph (190mph if it rains).

This is why a high quality 4K transfer of original Arriflex 16mm (taking a wild guess) footage from an experienced cameraman looks better than most of the crap on youtube today kids. This is handheld 47 year old raw footage in glorious Kodachrome colour. If the shooter didn't have his own soundman, then he pulled off a coup, the audio is gorgeous. THIS is the kind of footage that inspired me to be a shooter for the past 40 years. Grazie!

So, this is the coolest thing I've ever seen.
Incredible footage and in those days speeds above 240kmh were unbelievable fast!! in '73 I was 10 years old and the topspeeds of most cars was 160kmh back then. My dad had an original yellow Fiat 128 Coupe, it had a beautiful 1300cc engine. Those cars are very rare now.
My parents had a 74 128 Fiat coupe. Pretty fast in a straight line. Preferred getting the fun VW around corners though.
Being 2020, it's worth mentioning that in 1973, while Ferrari spent most of their resources in Sports Prototypes to no avail (Matra still took Le Mans), the F1 team was in complete disarray, did not even present the cars for the German and Dutch races, after a horrible race at Monza, #1 driver Ickx quit the team, and a then young Luca de Montezemolo was sent to steer the ship ; the SP project was canned, and only two years later a Ferrari driver won the F1 championship. Worth recalling now that the F1 team is in deep trouble again.
I found it rather puzzling that you failed to mention the biggest single reason for Ferrari's resurgence in F1 in the early to mid 1970s: the late, great NIKI LAUDA.
@@gimmeshelter1969 as much as I admire Niki, it wasn't him, it was the car. In '74 Clay Regazzoni came close to winning the title, beating Lauda. Something unthinkable in 1973.
The 312PB dominated 1972 World Championship of Makes, but didn't participated to Le Mans, because the Ferrari technicians thought the F1-derived engine would not have lasted. In 1973 the Matra-Simca won several races at the start of the season, so the 312PB was forced to participate to Le Mans, to not loose to many points, even if the technicians had little hope for it to make to the finish line.
In the end, it fared better than they thought. Merzario and Pace arrived second overall, Ickx and Redman retired at 90 minutes from the end. At Le Mans you have to pass the finish line to be classified, but Ickx and Redman completed more laps than the 3rd classified, the second Matra-Simca.
I wish Ferrari had continued in Group 6, in 1974. However, Alfa Romeo did take a 1-2-3 over Matra at the 1974 Monza 1000 KM.
The word "epic' is over used, but , ya.......whoever had this footage, you are a god.
