  • Captain is a Great Pyrenees dog who's been in and out of the shelter for a year because he's used to living outside and is a lot of dog to handle. He's about to meet his new parents and a tiny dog sibling - who all think he's perfect. Wait and watch his new dad cry happy tears!

Rich or poor the dog has a great home now with lots of room and people who are able to be with the dog round the clock. If I could be that person I would. I have to work my a*s off and theres nothing wrong with that but for a dog with potential issues..... he is a lucky dog. My mom's dog kept getting returned (4 times) because she would bark when other adopters would go to work. Mom is retired and here all the time and the dog is the best dog I have ever been around. Long story short...he died 03/23/2020 but the 13+ years I had him he brought me more joy than anything I've ever had. He ended up at about 73 pounds, we did agility for years (not very good!). As a Great Pyrenees owner, they are definitely not an easy dog to handle if you don't know what you are in for. They are bred to be stubborn and loud, but they are as loyal and loving as a dog can come. You just need to understand them and be willing to train yourself to be a good owner for them. My boy Ranger is definitely a lot to handle, but I wouldn't trade him for the world.

We lost our Goliath, 110 lb GP 2 1/2 years ago. He was dumped. I, thinking a small car had parked behind me, got out of my vehicle and the “car” was walking towards me! Of course, after learning he wasn’t microchipped and no tags and he looked old, took him home. Well he was young! Maybe 2. Yes stubborn and yes he barked all night, but it really became music as I knew he was protecting us. Forget leash walking... he just walked us all into a circle and then sat in front of us! But he never ate our chickens and was the sweetest soul! We had him for 12 years!

They are bred to watch over goats and sheep and such. So without that to do they can become very board and restless. I used to have one she was a great dog. I loved her dearly. She not only protected my animals but was fearsly protective of our family. We had 8 acre's and she could run wherever she chose. Even though we were in the country we were still having problems with being broke in to. One night my daughter's boyfriend came in to tell me she was running someone through the horse field. I told him it was ok that she was just doing her job which she loved. But a week later she was gone. We looked everywhere but never found her. It broke my heart. I miss that big sweetheart. I know someone killed her just to get her out of the way. RIP bonnie you're definitely missed.

The people who returned Captain probably didn't realize that this breed is a high-energy working dog, not a lap dog. Great Pyrenese tend to bark at night and if not allowed to get plenty of exercise, can be destructive. They probably just saw a pretty fluffy white dog without understanding the behavior of the breed.

I would go next door after school and play with her.
One day - not even 2 weeks since starting playing with her, I stepped into a hole - and broke my ankle and could not move.
It qould be abother 2 hours untill the neighbours will be home - or my mum will miss me at the dinner table. (It was in the 1970 ' 😁)
Natja literally stood over me and barked like crazy - a weird high shrieking bark - untill a neighbour further down the road took notice and came to see what was going on.
She growled at the neighbour at first but after speaking nicely to her, she relaxed and allowed him to help me.
She literally was my best friend for the next 6 years, untill she passed from old age.

As a side note, ALWAYS adopt from shelters. In Australia they are overflowing and many good bois & girls are being put to sleep needlessly because their is no room. If you want a dog, there are so many waiting for you who need your help at your local rescue shelter...

It's a blessing he got returned, if he hadn't he wouldn't have ended up with the family that was 'just right for him'. Even if those original adopters didn't know it, by returning him, he's perfect family had a chance to adopt him.

It's a testament to shelter adoptions.
There are 3.1 MILLION dogs in any given year, at shelters.
Adoptions like this, happen because folks stop shopping and start adopting :)

My sister's Great Pyrenees was also surrendered twice and given up for adoption. When my sister applied to adopt her they could only tell her that she was returned twice because of stomach issues. So with the help of the vet, they found the dog is allergic to chicken and now she lives a carefree life with her other adopted sister. This was a beautiful story

My brother and sister-in-law have adopted 2 great Pyrenees. One was on the side of the road, in terrible shape. They pulled over and picked her up. They took her to the vet, got her checked and had no owners, and the vet got her fixed up. They adopted her and she was with them until she passed from cancer. Then they went to a kill shelter (where they get all their cats and dogs) and found another great Pyrenees! They had a daughter, then adopted three children from Kazakhstan! My brother is an ER doctor and my sis-in-law is a nurse. They are wonderful, amazing people. They even learned Russian so they could speak to their adopted children while they learned English. ❤ The kids are all grown and doing great!
