@@user-cp5js2be1vthat’s not true at all. These dogs are expensive so even the “worst” farmer would rather bite a vet bill than to put the animal down so easily. Plus it takes so much time and training to bond a dog with a flock, a farm dog won’t protect a flock it’s not bonded to. So even from a heartless standpoint that’s not a good route to take if the dog can be saved. A lot of the time is an animal MUST be put down it’s usually something you can’t get over, like rabies or a life threatening injury that would just keep the dog suffering.

We live in a very rural area, with coyotes and feral hogs. The feral hogs tear up the pasture. We have 5 Great Pyrenees dogs, all about 2 years old now. At first the neighbor was not happy about our dogs showing up on his property and even threatened to shot them. We explained that these dogs are Great Pyrenees and they are guard dogs and will not kill his calves. One day this past spring the neighbor’s wife came over and said that her husband wanted us to keep the dogs in their kennels because they were expecting calves. We again explained about the dogs, and we even pointed out that we don’t have any fresh digging in our pasture because the dogs keep the feral hogs off the pasture. Last week the neighbor came by to visit and he was telling us that our dogs are now guarding his cattle and was happy about that. We also asked him if the feral hogs were still digging up his pasture and he admitted that he had seen no recent digging. We all smiled. Great Pyrenees are good dogs in a rural environment. Can’t say enough about how good this breed of dog will guard and keep predators away.

One day on a drive up in the mountains we came across a large flock of sheep grazing about 100 ft. from a fence keeping them from getting on the roadway. Little did we know they were being guarded by dogs. We got out of our vehicle to stand by it and watch the sheep graze for awhile, when out of nowhere we saw two very large dogs charging toward us. My boyfriend was driving us down the back roads, as usual. And there’s this bigger house we never really pay attention to, seems to be a farm with a huge yard and fenced in area. I’m always looking at the horses as we drive by.
And one night at 2am driving the back road at night, a bigger dog came up to our car barking and we stopped.
It appeared from the fenced in yard by the farm, it came from the darkness, we almost didn’t see it until it came around and got in front of our car.
We didn’t know what to do, we originally thought the dog was a stray, but we didn’t know why it would stop our car, we thought it needed help.
Until 2 or 3 other big dogs came from the darkness in the yard, almost circling our car and barking, sniffing.
We tried driving away a bit, but they seemed to be trailing the back of the car, barking and walking alongside the house, protecting it.
My first instinct was to try and find out if something was wrong with them.
But I realized, those were the guard dogs of the farm, protecting the horses that I look at everyday, about 40 of them, all different shades of color.
I love that I’ve never seen any people outside the farm, I’ve never seen the dogs before, but now I know the horses are protected late at night, and I know not to drive by there at 2am again lol.

We have had two Pyranees in our life. Absolutely the most wonderful dogs. We lived in Western Nebraska with many coyotes. We didn’t have sheep but we had cows, chickens, cats, horses , Border Collies and donkeys. One day a pack of coyotes was across the road, our Pyranees went across the road and the coyotes circled him. Husband went in the house for a rifle. Those coyotes started jumping in and nipping at our dog but not actually touching him. The dog circled and looked at each coyote. We watched and eventually the coyotes backed off and left. Not one bite! I always say…I don’t know what Devereaux said to those coyotes but he talked them down.

I know they're solitary in general but i assumed large groups were normal for hunting, it's just what I've always seen. I have a working Great Pyrenees. These dogs are a Godsend! I live in a hollar with hills on both sides of me. My girl was about a year old. It was just at dusk, loosing light fast. One of my goats was in the throws of kidding when we heard coyotes howling, close, on my side of the ridge. My GP comes a flying down the other hill, crosses the creek and puts a run to those coyotes! Thankfully there weren't that many so they weren't as emboldened as the large pack in this story. What a scary event! I am ever so grateful I have her here! She is an important part of my farm!
What saddens me are the comments I read from people who have never run a farm, never raised livestock, are probably a bunch of city slickers who have no clue about country life, criticizing the owner. Out here, you better learn to do a lot of doctoring yourself because country vets are as scarce as hens teeth, and nearly impossible to get on the weekend or holidays. And then the government passes a new regulation in the dark of night to make it even harder, if not impossible, for us to treat our animals if need be! @@ezlow1065 As a farmer I now can not buy antibiotics for my animals from a feed store any more. I now have to have a prescription from a vet. Doesn't sound bad on the surface, right? Here's the deal, it is EXTREMELY difficult to get a vet out to the farm. Country vets are as scarce as hens teeth around here! I am EXTREMELY lucky IF I can get one out here for an emergency in time to save the animal. More times than not, we farmers have to learn to do our own vet work. Animals can go down, and die, very quickly if they are not treated as soon as possible. I lost a goat because I did not have the proper medication on hand when I discovered her. I now make sure I have what I might need on hand. When my supply of antibiotic runs out, if I can't get a vet to give me a prescription before I actually need it, I could lose animals. A BETTER solution would have been to have antibiotics available in smaller vials. I have to buy 100ml vials, which is the smallest available. The dosage for my goats is 1-3 ml for 1-3 days (depending on why it's being given, and size of the animal).Once that vial has been opened, I have 60 days to use it before I have to throw it away. I have had to throw away 99 mls of antibiotic because I can not get it in smaller vials. See the problem?

He is overly protective of me, however, and he defers to my Dachshund. They're very soulful dogs, unlike all others and when he passes, they'll probably need to sedate me. We/humans don't deserve them 🐾💓🐾

This dog is such a good brave boy, I was so happy to hear that he made it through. I had a bit of a laugh, though. The farmer said that he had taken Casper in to see if he would do a good job and could stay on the farm. Pretty sure Casper proved himself quite thoroughly 😂❤

Casper is a true hero ! Excellent job done... Hoping his recovery is going well. The farmer got a first hand look at what this dog and its breed are about.. Casper took down 8 out of 13 coyotes , Very impressive...The farmer owes Casper a lot of steaks for his heroic deed of protecting his flock of sheep. Treat, care and love that pup with respect and kindness, he deserves it! Plus the farmers neighbor's owes Casper alot as well, for stopping the threat on their livestock.

According to other comments here, the reason Casper took two days to return home is because he tracked the remaining coyotes to their den, and made sure he'd killed every last one of them before he even thought about anything else. Pretty incredible, IMHO.

An interesting comment about giving Casper a steak. I learned from the people in our Italian village that their fierce protectors only drink whey because of the high protein and other nutrient content. They never eat meat of any kind for obvious reasons.

Coyotes are a species of canine, so they are dogs and very intelligent. It would not surprise me if the remnants of the pack that Casper vanquished were keeping well clear of "Casper's farm". They might test out for his scent, from a safe distance...

Taking him to a vet should not have been a question. He was clearly severely wounded. And, why didn’t the electrical fence keep the coyotes out?
Also, moving in large packs could mean they are starving and want to survive at all costs.
Consider, climate change, large wildfires, unprecedented floods, hurricanes, etc. there is not much Left for them to eat.
All and all I’m elated that he survived from his gaping wounds protecting his livestock. He is a hero and deserves to be recognized as such.
