  • The most difficult part of this wrap is removing the decals and cleaning the surface. Otherwise this is pretty straight forward.

    Anytime there are decals on a boat for an extended period the area where they are is protected and the gelcoat will be like brand new but the rest of the hull will be a eroded. It leaves an area where the decals are ever so slightly raised. Unless you really were at the hall and sand and buff the area there is nothing you can do about it. I have lettered boats where they have changed the name several times and you can see each name that was on the boat previously.. I love your videos they are great.

      Just go to vvividhq.com and search for “Shield Spray Post Wrap” and you’ll find it. It’s just a spray that is applied after the wrap is done to protect it.
      From the product description -> VVIVID SHIELD is a unique protective sealant designed to shield vinyl wrap and plastic coatings from UV rays, scratches, cracking and weathering.

    Christian - I have a pontoon boat in excellent shape, except the exterior vinyl graphics are in not the best shape. The pontoon boat is 13 years old, so before the trend today of fiberglass sides. Has the corrugated aluminum sides with the graphics on that. Looked at new graphics, looked at paint. Then ran across your boat video and wrap. If i decided on some nice wrap, like the metallic type you used on this video, or maybe a carbon fiber look, what would be your recommendation of the type and brand of vinyl wrap for a first timer? Thanks in advance.

  • @jpsrock

    That was awesome!!! Thanks for uploading that video, I was wondering the whole time while watching your videos wrapping cars if the wrap would stand the water and stick well to the gel coat. I have an old project boat and 2 wave runners that I want to do a vinyl wrap on it. Now I’m more confident and I’m going forward to get it done for this summer.
    I’d like to see more details on how you set up the front tape that you mentioned, since the front of the boat is the one that meet both ends and will get all the stress from the water.
    Was that Avery brand on the vinyl ?
    Thanks for the video bro, it looks amazing!!

  • @detectivefaja1352

    The pin striping lines are formed right in the mold. The decals protect the gelcoat from oxidation therefore leaving a pristine gelcoat embossing as the gelcoat eroded around it.

    To get rid of the old letters showing you should have carefully wet sanded the letters and it would have made it a lot smoother then buffed and then put the wrap on. That's what I did and no letters or decal are seen through. I knew it would show through if I didn't do that first. Yes it's a lot of extra work still looks good

  • @adamelwood7768

    Looks good, was curious about your comments as to why the vinyl doesnt like to stick to the gel-coat? Could this be from contaminates and waxes/polishes being embedded in the gelcoat over the years?
    To explain why you are seeing the decals you had cleaned off prior to the wrap. The decals actually seal and protect the gelcoat over the years and years of corrosion and weather exposure. SO, when these decals are removed, looking at that particular area in the right lighting, you can see that the gelcoat is raised where the decals/stickers once were compared to the rest of the boat. Sometimes, not always this is also a way to tell how many different owners or states the boat has been registered in when looking at the boats registration sticker area and tracing out the raised letters/numbers

      Prep is key,I mainly do boats and you have to strip the wax,

    • @stevefarmer6607
      @stevefarmer6607 Před 5 lety

      Adam E if I’m correct, gelcoat has wax in it for curing purposes. Some don’t, but most do. The wax also helps in removal of molds when layup is complete. Remember, boats are built from the outside in. The gelcoat is the first part of the hull.

    • @TEAMERICA96
      @TEAMERICA96 Před 2 lety

      @@stevefarmer6607 Correction, Gel coat has NO Wax in it. If it did, the next layer (layup) would not bond to it. Wax is applied to the mold before the Gel coat for mold release. Wax is put in resin to cut off oxygen so that the surface will cure otherwise the resin will remain tacky for bonding to the next coat during lamination. Mold release serves that function. Resin WITH wax is used for a surfacing resin (outside of a mold) so that it will cure and can be sanded as the wax rises to the surface and seals off the air for a complete cure.
      I use to repair fiberglass boats and in order to repair surface (Gel coat) damage, we would spray Poly Vinyl Alcohol (PVA), which is water soluble, over the new Gel coat surface that would then dry to get the Gel coat to cure for sanding and final polishing. This is only for Polyester Boat Resins. Epoxy is another story and is seldom used in boats except when used for Carbon Fiber applications. Because of it's weight, Epoxy is used almost exclusively in aircraft and does not require a wax for curing.
