The Foreign Minister of the Maldives, Moosa Zameer, was in India to meet in Indian counterpart, Dr. S. Jaishankar. The Maldives has been sending mixed signals to India over the past week. On the one hand, the Maldivian President, Mohamed Muizzu, has been pushing for the exit of Indian troops from the nation. Indian troops have been stationed in the Maldives to help in operate aircraft during search and rescue operations. Muizzu wants them out, because he won the presidency due to his "India Out" campaign. But on the other hand, the Maldives still wants Indian tourists and investments. Dr. S. Jaishankar seems to have had enough of the Maldivian flip-flopping.

I spent 5 years in Port Blair in the late 90s, and the slow but steady erosion of the ecosystem because of runaway tourism was apparent even then. Domestic tourism has grown manifold since then, and local governments seem to have little interest in protecting the ecological balance. So should we really ‘develop’ the Lakshadweep Islands for tourism. I think not. I’ve been to Androth, Kavaratti, Agatti and Bangaram as well, and I’m quite sure the ecology is very fragile and would not withstand the onslaught of domestic tourists for long.
We indian should give them reality check & stop visit Maldives for 1 or 2 years. Some time responsibility as indian citizen we need to show.

Where's the need for Mr Jaishankar to show the Maldivian minister the fruits of Indian largesse , as if the latter is ignorant of these. There is absolutely no need to give favourable trade terms or financial aid to Maldives.
I’m not advocating for adverse actions on Maldives but they should trade with India on standard terms. Good terms should be reserved for friends.
We should also not restructure or forgive the debt that they have taken from us. If they fail to pay the debt, we should start exploiting their EEZ.

Obviously, most of the Maldives peope agree with their president Muizzi. He won 80% of the vote in the follow on election after the controversy with India. But since Maldives is in India's neighborhood and nefarious actors will take advantage of the situation (like China, Turkey, Pakistan, etc), India should stay involved with the Maldives and support economic dev and support to the opposition parties. As we have seen in Nepal and Sri Lanka when they went to bed with China, that relationship eventually sours and the relationship eventually gets more balanced again. Wouldn't be suprised if Muizzi has a large swiss bank account courtesy of China.
