- A bright, clean Atlantic salmon rises to a RS Alistair Gold JC tube ( 2 inch copper) fly presented on a floating line at the famous Ibsley Pool on the Hampshire Avon.. The Avon valley is bursting with life with the arrival of summer birds like the reed bunting and stonechat. On Paul's arrival at Ibsley Bridge he is greeted by a pair of Goldfinches. He decides to try out his new gold coloured flies! This film is packed with helpful tips and wildlife clips including a white hart deer, barn owl, little egret catching an eel and a Common Buzzard up close.
Great post.....well done.
Nice video mate I learned a lot 👍
Fantastic to see the fight and what a great condition the river Avon is in. Very well done Paul
Very well done Paul. Having fished the Avon since I was eleven, I know how rare this kind of catch is these days, and good to see how healthy both the river and the fish are. Great river, great fish, great fishing.
Its nice to see the HA producing quality fish like that. Well done.
thanks Leigh
Thanks to you I'm learning how to fish, very informative videos. Always a good watch. Thanks.
thank you foxsniper - good luck with your fishing
Great video and fish Paul, nice to also see that you don't have a problem putting it back to spawn and fight another day.
stunning fish paul well done
Well done, lovely fish.
lovely clean fish
T Green wrote; "How did you know it was just a low double did you weigh it?" After you have caught dozens, or hundreds, of bigger fish it is quite easy to judge their weights and lengths. I can usually judge a fish's length within one inch.
thanks reeve177, the river is recovering well from the floods and the salmon are running. The next 3 months has got to be prime time for fishing the fly.
thanks Theo - this is my preferred way to catch salmon! I will be at the Royalty tomorrow - sky tv will be there
I am back in Wales tomorow, fishing fabulous revir Towy. Back to Dorset on Monday.
Enjoy tomorrow. Would be great to see you again at Roayalty. T
Very nice video and what a beauty :-) it almost look like the salmon rivers here in Denmark.

Guest tickets are about £ 35 for the day with a member and covers about 30- 40 pools on Somerely Estate. You can join CAC for about £ 350 approx for the year - covers salmon fishing from 1st Feb to 31st August and course fishing from June 16th - 15th March. Pm me if you fancy a day next season -
Wonderful video! You Sir are not only a very good fly angler but very patient to set up the camera on the tripod so all the viewers could enjoy seeing you play the fish. It is much harder to land a large salmom, or trout, when you are not in the water and standing on a higher bank. It is easy to beach a big fish on gravel. Congratulations!
thanks Matt
thanks zack - please feel free to subscribe by clicking on the salmon pic in the right hand box
Hi Paul
This is the very first video I have seen before we met. Theodor
cheers the caster26. glad you liked the post
thanks will do
Awsome
Hi Paul, Nice fish and video. What net are you using? and what are you using to hold it on your back?
How did you know it was just a low double did you weigh it? I saw a guy take a sea trout he believed to be just around eight pounds, which turned out to be eleven pounds when I insisted it was weighed. The same happened on the once famous North Troy Tench lake, were an old boy said he had just taken a six pounder. Seeing it in his keep net I asked if I could weigh it. He was a bit put out believing I did not believe it was six but when I said that it was possibly much bigger than that and why he did not weigh it himself. It turned out to be 8lbs.06ozs. A personal best for him. One has to weigh ones fish in order to not only be truthful but to not rob your self of a personal best. It was a good vid and nice to see that salmon still run the Avon. It was a nice fish to get after some hard work at your fishing and so very rewarding.
gut instinct - I had a weigh net but I don't like to keep the fish out of the water for too long so I prefer to guess based on length and girth.
Someone should invent I net that weighs the fish when you have it in it possible most definitely and also very easy
Very nice fish! Just a question here, not trying to come across as arrogant or condescending as you most likely have more experience fishing than me, but I fish Atlantic Salmon on the Miramichi rivers in Canada and treble hooks aren't allowed here, as well, I was taught to use 8lb test leader tapered down to 6lb test. I do get bigger fish than that, but you mentioned you use 20 lb? Is that normal for where you are fishing, as well are treble hooks normally used too? I've only ever used singles.
Its a 20 pounder, no its a twenty plus. Then its a 14 pounder no wait I think its a 12 to 14 pounder. No its now a 12 pounder! Aye your eye is really in for the fish sizing Lol!! What entertainment!
+mark kelly pleased you enjoyed the video!
are you overhead cast or spey cast? what is the fly line used?
Fikree Fauzi overhead cast using a gold aliistair from Helmsdale, copper 2 inch with Jc
Hi,
I just started salmon fishing, And im a long time wild brown trout fisher from Ireland, What Presentation? Will i have to do mending, what about Casting across the current Letting the current do the work and let the line swing around in the current?,or just cast mend then retrieve(should i retrieve Fast, slow etc!)? Could you say which one of theses are they bet to catch salmon?, Also where would the salmon be lying, Around big rocks? Slow water near faster water?
thanks!!!
Hi fishing7776, you can let the current mend the line if its moving in the right direction - however if you want to slow the fly down a mend will allow the fly to work better - plus you can tweak and work the fly to invoke a take. It is possible to do a mid air mend so that the fly is working correctly as it hits the water. If you have a slow run then a curve along the current will speed up the fly up and may also invoke a take without the need for a mend. You have to play it by ear and instinct.
Hi Paul, excellent video and well done for returning this Slammer ;-)
What cam where you using on you cap ? and how do I go about getting info on a ticket/accommodation etc...?? I fish the mighty Mawddach river in mid-west wales.
Hi Glyn, thanks glad you enjoyed the vid - I am using a contour roaming head cam - HD 1080 with 170 vision - 3 1/2 hours recording time - £ 120 from Amazon. Be my guest - £ 35 per day - let me know when you want to fish - I can recommend accommodation - best times are May and June following a spring tide - but we can fly fish from 1st Feb - so I am all geared up for my first session tomorrow! I'd love to join you on the River Mawddach - do you get big sea trout as well as salmon? How much is a day ticket? speak soon Paul
Paul Greenacre Hi Paul, Check out the info on the site- DAA,- Dolgellau Angling Association , I've forgotten how much it costs, which is sad seen that I'm on the committee. Yes we get big (Sewin) Sea-trout and Slammers,- best times here are from late May to end of season, for Sewin Slammers are running later and later so my best advice is late in the season, almost the last 2 month!!! Cheers and yep I do Gillie work, Glyn
Paul Greenacre...Ps Cheers for the Cam info. ;-)
thanks Glyn, will check it out and try to come down toward the end of the season Paul
