    The C5 Chevy Corvette Z06 is the ultimate performance car bargain. Today I'm reviewing a C5 Z06 to show you why its such a great deal -- and why the 2002 Corvette Z06 is worth a serious look. I'm also driving the Z06 to review its driving experience.

      Take another sports car of the era that is pretty equivalent as far as condition and performance, but has a quality interior. How much would that cost today (plus ongoing maintenance costs) compared to this Z06? Different car, but one I'm more familiar with-
      2.5 years ago I bought a 1993 base Corvette for $8000; 67000 miles and very good condition inside and out.
      Another car from the era that I really like is the Porsche 928 GTS; the 1993 version did 0-60 in 5.4s -- the base Corvette was a couple of tenths slower, but in the same ballpark. So, can I get a 928 GTS in similar condition to my Corvette for similar money? Not even close. Looking at like $20k+ easily and god forbid anything goes wrong with it!
      Is the interior nicer? Without a doubt, but it isn't $12k+ nicer and it wasn't $40-50k nicer in 1993.

      Never really thought of that, the corvettes interior I always thought was cheap, but I’m trying to think of other cars from that period, the Supra was done, the Porsche, AMGs and Ms from that time period are not going to be as reliable as the vette which actually is one of the more reliable chevys.

  • @91cannibal
    @91cannibal Před 2 lety +349

    Honestly, C5 interiors are really comfortable and not bad. Every Chevy squeak's and rattles but that's ok. The 405hp makes me forget about those things

    • @bunsenn5064
      @bunsenn5064 Před 2 lety +6

      The C6 kind of follows the trend, and the 500+ hp on that one makes up for any of the downs.

    • @jeremydewitte9823
      @jeremydewitte9823 Před 2 lety +5

      Yeah, the C5 isn’t really horrible considering the time and the price, and I didn’t buy my vettes for that (even though they could be better). I bought them for how they drive, the style, and the experience. It is amazing however that GM was able to totally redesign the whole car on the C8’s to mid-engine AND have the interior totally upgraded for the price they are. Incredible how the 2020’s were only $2,000 (approximately) higher on the base price than an based price automatic from 2019 AND have a dual clutch transmission.

    • @jeremydewitte9823
      @jeremydewitte9823 Před 2 lety +4

      Also, on anyone complaining about problems on them, you can go spend half a million on a Lamborghini and still have issues. If Lambos, Ferraris, and Mclarens didn’t have issues, they wouldn’t hire mechanics at their dealerships. There’s a reason why Corvette has such a great fan base.

    So funny...I remember sitting in my C5 the night i bought it, I had it sitting in my garage, all I could think about was how beautiful the interior was, it was like a cockpit, like a fighter jet. It was finer than any other car I had ever owned (my other car was a 1988 b2200 and I thought that was nice!) and I felt like I had really made it. Still have the car and still feel that way every time I sit down. Guess it's all about perspective.

      CZcamsrs like this, that make 400-500k per month, view these like a car for peasants. Perhaps, but it had it where it counts and the interior is super comfortable. Apsis had splendid options to fix a lot of those issues and you can spend your 15-20k extra on the interior to make it what you wanted, but now.... you can't have a basic c8... let alone a basic c8z. The people that could afford a c5z can't afford a c8z if their incomes kept pace with inflation.

      Most N/A American V8 performance cars can get around 20 mpg or better in mixed driving easily. I could get low-mid 20s easy in my LS1 in a solid 50/50 driving mix. No hyper miling, you just have to not drive like an ass and keep it in the upper gears, that's all. On the highway, many of these engines can do 30 mpg or better. All the world's smugness about how their engines create more HP/L, as if that means anything, and all the crying about how enormous American engines are, but, in reality, Americans V8s generally very efficient, under stressed engines yet still make tremendous amounts of usable power.

    I just did a cross country road trip in a 2001 C5. With my father, we started in Oregon, went north along the Canadian border, and ended in North Carolina. We absolutely loved the experience and had zero issues with the car after 3,500 miles. We never lacked for power even when going "a few mph" over the 80mph speed limits in Montana. The driving experience was phenomenal for a $12k car and we both agreed that the C5 earned our respect.

      That's right! I don't see why the softies are always complaining about the interior quality, as if I'm constantly touching the leather on my dashboard every single second. No way, when I buy a Corvette C5 it's all about performance and driving. I could care less about interior in a car like this. Plus, I actually really like the interior. It's simple and straight to the point, a throwback to the days long past. Why I love 90s and 00s cars over today's.

    I enjoyed the review, brought back memories...I went from a C4 '96 to a '04 Z06 with the Z16 package with the CF hood, and I was amazed at the time at the fit and finish and overall quality improvement between the C4 to C5, it was dramatic. That said...
    In the late '90s there was a strong pressure on GM by enthusiasts for GM to build a simple, affordable, stripped-down Corvette for the masses to enjoy. The FRC was the result, and like the Z06, it was all about simplicity, affordability, handling performance and of course lightness. Heck, I recall pundits were even demanding that this "Billy Bob" version should have no comfort options, and be totally option-deleted down to manual door locks and crank windows. The Z06 was sort of the end-result, it had no option for remote CD changer, no power seats, no spare, even the glass was thinner for lightness, and the seats felt like they weighed nothing. It was supposed to be affordable, light, and simple, and perform very well, because that is what the market demanded at the time.
    It is ironic that Doug, like many contemporary reviewers, are now pointing out the deficiencies about the cheapness of the interior, etc, when in fact this was a genuine response by GM to give the people what they demanded at the time, using typical GM parts that were available in the late 90's. Back then I did not think that the C5 was any worse than many of the other late-90's era cars for fit and finish and interior quality, in fact it was probably much better than it's contemporaries.
