Everyone going on about the $2 donation being sad, please show me the donations to the project from LDO, Fabreeko, Siboor etc. They make tons of money producing kits from the Voron BOM and others are making lots of money offering upgrades and machined parts. None of them are donating to the project either, just taking and making money and no one blinks an eye. At least Sovol is which puts them miles ahead of every other company making money off the project.
There's a big difference between selling a kit based on a bill of materials from an open source project and creating a complete printer straight from it and using their branding. I'm not saying Sovol is wrong, they are well within their rights to use the open source project to make and selll a printer but they have intentionally tried to imply/tie their name to Voron without Voron's consent. They aren't marketing it as a great corexy printer, they are marketing it as Voron but cheaper. Again, they can do it, but the way they are going about it is questionable. If you look at the Troodon, (which is way closer to a Voron clone) they only mention that it was inspired by Voron.
Also to add, giving $2 (which is basically nothing compared to the price) to cash in on someone else's branding is not great. Thats why people are upset.
We can't speak for other companies, but LDO is doing monthly donate to Voron since we start ship Voron kits to our resellers. I believe some of LDO reseller is doing that too. But make sure it is not royalty fees, it is donate, to support Voron team (non-profit group) to do more R&D for this community.
... and don't forget the donations from Bambu Lab to Voron, Klipper, Prusa and the people who brought things like Input Shaping to open source.
They used it, they copied it, they didn't tell and made their printers closed source ... so they "donated" nothing back, not even a big shout-out in their slicer, software or on their printer screens.

Its like the fable of the old woman who found a frozen snake in the wood pile and nurses it back to health, only to be bitten. A snake is a snake and will bite you if you let it in. The fact that they still send them is pure joy, because you KNOW there's gonna be a bite!
I find it rather interesting watching multiple reviews of the same product and how everyone has different things they find good, needs work or just unacceptable. It's why I refuse to listen to any one person. Personally I have very different standards than other people. Most of the things I hear reviewers complain about are meaningless to me .. things such as the fan noise or appearance. The fans don't bother me in the least and they just become background noise I can tune out without any problem. As for appearance, I find it absurd to put in even so much as a single second thinking about how it looks. It's a tool for me and no different than a hammer. I don't care what a hammer looks like as long as I can knock nails in with it. I'll just put all the reviews into a bucket and lump them together. Then I'll wait for sovol to knock out a few changes and buy one after all the first adopters (ie suckers) buy one.

so will it be possible to enclose this printer build in a filter system and an active heating element and print higher demanding materials. some even say, you can't print tpu on it, but if it's possible to do all of the above and print most materials, it would make a creality k2 plus contestant to me.
leaks say the k2 plus with cms will be around 1.1k, maybe 1k a few weeks later (in creality style), if the sv08 is less than 600$, there would be some room left for buying an enclosure, filter system, heating element and MMU (granted Sovol releases a good one)

I liked it when Sovol took the Creality designs and improved upon them and more importantly they fixed them! and sold them for less money, I held a torch for Sovol back in those days.
I am beyond having to adjust Z offsets and would have thought a new manufactured Voron printer would have true auto levelling (tramming, before someone corrects me), it would have been nice to have had something on the uprights to attach enclosure panels to, drilling might not be an option as the linear rails are mounted on the backside of the uprights
It does have true auto tramming, that’s what QGL does, it also has auto bed leveling. So the exact same features as the actual voron v2.4 unless you decide to put voron tap on the 2.4 you’ll always have to adjust z height to some degree (which because it’s supposed to be open source I’m sure someone will make a mount for voron tap and a stealth burner tool head for the sv08) Also sovol announced they’re making a panel kit to enclose this printer. Sovol took what would cost easily 1200-1500$ as a voron v2.4 and mass produced to sell at almost half the price. So it’s the exact same thing they did to Creality and just doing it with an open source project. (I totally agree that 2$ per 600$ printer donated to the voron team is ridiculous though)
It has auto Z offset, it just wasn’t shown in the video. The main issue is Sovol Klipper macros aren’t fully complete, much like the sv07. It has a metal load cell and wiper at the back for z offset calibration. Hopefully a day on printer.cfg update for all the new to Klipper people.
One nice thing is that the community can make up for a lot of these issues. It shouldn't be that way, but making it open helps at least.

Shame this printer isn't all cooked yet, I was looking forward to seeing how it turns out... On an unrelated note, any chance you'll review Infimech TX ? It's a new printer form a sister (I guess? ) company of FlyingBear, I remember you kind of liked FlyingBear printer, and this one seems to use some similar parts. I'm finding it very interesting, but there are pretty much no reviews of it.
Nero found that one of the pulley shaft holes was completely misaligned in the gantry blue injection molded parts, causing the belt to grind very severely. Was yours okay in that aspect?

Possibly, but I’d wait until someone does some testing running it enclosed. There’s no reason it shouldn’t be able to handle ABS and ASA but letting someone else do the experiments is always a wise move

It's likely not an issue for an open frame printer. When it gets enclosed and/or with a chamber heater, we might see some issues crop up

Not sure if i understood well but you mentionned in the video there a kind of induction probe (nozzle) but from recents news it seem to be a pressure probe similar to the prusa mk4.
The main probe at the print head is inductive, there is also a pressure knob outside the print bed to calibrate the z-offset of the nozzle.
I ordered mine today but did not get the early price, ordered it with enclosure.
The staircase effect on the top sides of the hull is EXTREMELY rounded, indicating excessive acceleration for the given stiffness of frame/assembly. It would be interesting to print the Klipper "acceleration tower" which shows the widening of the gap, to judge which acceleration the printer can handle without excessive smoothing.
In fact, it's a good test to compare printers besides the maximum marketed acceleration.
But it said here it can do ten bajillion meters per seconds

I was expecting a large format Klipper bed slinger, but I like Sovol's Voron 2.4 For The Rest Of Us approach. I'm guessing the extruder is completely proprietary even though the angular appearance has a StealthBurner vibe to it? I guess there are pros and cons either way but I'd like the ability to swap to a third party or open source extruder.
Awesome review - I really wish someone would post the exact dimensions of the base or the whole machine as assembled ! ( of course it's "close" to a voron but . . ) I'd love to know the footprint of the base and the height !
I can definitely see me buying an SV08, fully enclosing it, and feeding it from a bearing spindle reel holder mounted above (TPU) and pitching the reverse Bowden tube and side mounted spool holder. For a $500 printer, I'm surprised the SV08 has such a low tech throwback display and user interface. Then again, for a Klipper machine that I manage via a Fluidd tab in my web browser, I wouldn't care if the printer's user interface is simple to save some money.
looking forward to look at this printer in one month, two months and six months after release .... now it looks as a decent platform for 350 mm and less than 600 USD, but i think it will be a great one when 3d printing community starts improving / modding it.

sovol did a good job except for the proprietary nozzle, everything's getting more and more proprietary.
It's "inspired" from a design that is being sold on aliexpress. The pros of it not being completely original is that you can probably buy some spares from day 1.

Great Review but not impressed with the final result of the last benchy. Not sure what this unit is going for price wise but if you have to add something more to a 3D printer after you put it together to make it work better I have an issue with that. having been into 3D printers since 2015 I'm done with modding to make manufacturers product work like they should have.

Nathan you are the definitive source for 3D Printing news. I saw another “review” and they were talking about the injection mounded parts on the gantry being not great which was causing the belt pulley to be crooked. Possibly the pins were too short? Could you check yours out and see how it looks?

I think so too! Troodon 2.0 Pro costs a little more but has an enclosure, no plastic parts in critical places but entirely made of metal, extruder and nozzle that are already prepared for all filaments, Stealthburner, Klipper etc. I also believe that the SV08 will not be cheaper if you can order all “features/updates” from Sovol (e.g. housing, etc.)!

@@Interspieder I assume that the regular price will be around 600, plus then approx. 150 for enlosure? That's what my "little more" referred to! At the moment you can't compare the two in terms of price. Come back when the enclosure (as an extra) for the SV08 is there, we will then add up the (two) prices after the "early bird" period, compare the SV08 plastic parts against the Troodon metal parts and both hotends, real reviews and only then maybe you can answer your question yourself. Feel free to buy what you want, but that doesn't make it better, if the only argument is "just cheaper", in the truest sense of the word! For clarity: I am neither representative of one or the other, I'm just trying to find out the best value for my money!

really hope this one will be fully cooked during product live cycle. SV07/SV07+ never got PETG profiles from Sovol, they are still offering no profiles, but an outdated cura fork with PLA only.
GerGO 3D print had a video on installing Christian Vick's profiles for different materials and nozzles .. that's what I've been using, with some mods to the cooling settings because I designed a whole diff parts cooling system.

I hope your argument is not "Sovol does not need to provide profiles for SV07 PETG+TPU, because people can find it on youtube and reddit" (in this case sovol should at least link and credit those solutions by 3rd parties.)
@@rarbiart Oh no, I was not going to defend Sovol. Hell, they advertise all the different filaments their machine can handle. It was only a minor inconvenience to look for them.
On the Sovol forums for the SV07 there is a thread about prints getting knocked off the bed by the head .. that is where I learned about the parts cooling deficiencies and ended up designing a better traveling parts cooler. It's really ugly but works .. it's up on Printables as a dual 5015 cooler for that printer. Turns out the curtain fan caused a bunch of problems if you pushed the machine for larger prints or multiples spread across the bed.
@@suzyamerica4679 Sovol could have made a pull request at the orca slicer git hub for the missing material profiles. or they could have done the same at the cura git hub, if they do prefer cura. But they basically left the profiles/slicer as yanked out for the "early bird" buyers. And that's SV07plus more than a year on the market now and not discontinued AFAIK.
You should ask Guy if he ever uses 3-2-1 blocks in his shop. 😂 Perfect First Layer.
conclusion after a single benchy... Have a look at DIY PERSPECTIVE, thats a proper review. I get that the machine is new and you weren't super jazzed on it, but I think a little more could be done especially with that title
SOVOL SV-03C KE V2 PLUS SE MAX hahahaha I hope not, it already a pain to look for information for the Ender 3 V3 before you only find info on the SE or KE. Company should always use the same length for the naming to be consistant and help the users find info online.

I'd go with Troodon as it'll be compatible with more mods made straight for Voron, The Pro version also has better screen and Tap probing

A question for anyone - what is the procedure for changing filaments on this machine? Is it the usual thing of undoing the feed tube at the top of the hotend, clipping the filament, extruding the remainder, and threading the new filament through? TIA

This was a really exciting printer until I actually saw it working. I’m sure in a year once the community has modded it into oblivion and any that exist in the wild are basically Vorons it might be a decent printer but for now it’s a hard pass.
Just a constructive comment for next time. The printer base is black, you are wearing a black shirt and the lighting in the room is rather poor (or too soft) It was like watching a horror movie, I was waiting for a moster to come in frame at any moment. :)

Did you see that the second benchy was.. a second benchy? Not the first?
Idk if I mentioned it but the 2nd benchy was after cleaning the bed. The first one came loose because of 2 issues:
1 - The auto z-offset needs some tuning, I think a fix has been developed for this.
2 - I set the fasteners down on the middle of the print area, which deposited some machine oil onto the PEI sheet. This really affects bed adhesion, so by wiping it down with alcohol it effectively fixed it.
Those plastic parts are just dumb. I mean off course if you build a Voron by yourself plastic is your almost only option using a 3D printer. But when you start 1000's of 'em, plastic would be your last and worse choice. Even casted aluminium alloy parts would have been a better solution there.
My takeway is, get the SV06 if you want a cheap and very reliable bedslinger that prints perfect out of the box
Buy an SV08 if you like to tinker and mod.
Don't buy any of the other Sovols, they suck.
How awesome would it be if you were to start your videos being dressed up as a mongolian warrior on horseback with the 3D-Printer strapped to the saddle and then you would proceed to drag it into your yurt where you would then film the review. You could also spice it up with pronouncements about what is best in life and what not. Don't hold back, go crazy! Anyway..., I might just be dehydrated or something. But yurts are great, are they not?

In my opinion, you are doing a disservice to the printer you are reviewing by comparing it with another printer, particularly in this case. Please review each printer based only on its own pros and cons. Please keep all assumptions out of reviews. Your observations are OK, but assumptions are not.

Let’s design a hot end where you can’t see the first layer. Great idea.
The SV07+ is fantastic for that, which is why I took off the hot end cover, the lights, the parts cooling fan, and made a whole new parts cooling system.
I'll wait for the K2. Larger Core XY multi color FDM printer. What the K1 should've been.
