I have been looking for how to convert a string variable into a numerical one for a few hours and everything was incredibly complicated and convoluted, thank you so much for this easy and straightforward way! You just made my day!

Hey there! Thanks for your video! I have a dataset with quite some recoded variables. Now I've added a few data cases, but the recoded variables don't automatically calculate outcomes for those 'new extra' cases. Do you know how I would be able to do that? Thanks in advance!

The method is great, but I have a problem. My labels are 1 - Never, 2 - Almost Never, 3 - Sometimes, 4 - Almost Always, 5 - Always. And as you can observe they are not alphabetical but the autorecode function gives 1 - Almost Always, 2 - Almost Never, 3 - Always, 4 - Never, 5 - Sometimes. How do i fix this.
I even tried first autorecoding as giving and then going in variable view to change the values but there is no effect.

Then it is better to use command: Recode into different variable. In the left part of the dialog box (old value ) you write the old coding like "Never" and then write the new code 1 in the right upper box . Add. Continue with next (Almost never) . After the command is finished you should give valurnorna kabels to each of the new codes. When you have worked in SPSS some time I recommend to save the command into a syntax Windows (by clicking "paste" instead of "ok").

    AUTORECODE VARIABLES=AGE WhatisyourGender
    /INTO AGE1 GENDER1
    /BLANK=MISSING
    /PRINT.
    >Error # 17006
    >An already existing variable name was used on the INTO subcommand.
    >Execution of this command stops.
kindly guide for this i have tried a lot , but again and again error is showing , for what reason?

Autorecode is only used for strong variables and I suppose age is numeric? Try to do the command from Transform menu and only choose one variable . If age is numeric and you want age groups it is better to use command transform-visual binning or transform-recode into different variable.
