  • Boat Friends,
Brace yourselves for one of the most thrilling adventures I’ve ever captured on my channel! Today, we’re witnessing an extraordinary feat as the “Joseph L. Block” makes its daring entry into Duluth, navigating through a fierce storm that’s brought 43 mph winds coupled with towering waves crashing hard against the shore.
Out here on the North Pier on April 28th, 2024, the air is frigid at just 37°F, with a biting windchill of 24°F. The rain hasn’t let up, pelting down so hard it’s a battle to keep my camera lens clear - thank goodness for my rain gear and rubber boots! Without them, I’d be soaked to the bone by these relentless conditions.
In all my time recording ships here, I’ve never seen a captain decide to brave such a storm by entering the Duluth ship canal. Typically, they’d anchor and wait it out for sure. That's what other ships did on the Superior entry side at the same time. The determination to push through to the CN Dock to load up on taconite is nothing short of heroic. I’m on edge, thrilled but also deeply concerned for the safety of the captain and crew battling Mother Nature’s wrath.
Join me in this intense, nerve-racking experience, and see for yourselves how the mighty 728-foot Joseph L. Block confronts one of Lake Superior’s fierce storms. It’s a testament to the brave souls who navigate these giant steel vessels. It also shows their skill!

On November 10th 1975 I was part of the Crew of USCGC Wood Rush WLB-407. We departed Duluth Harbor at near full speed into seas breaking over the lighthouses at the ends of the breakwall in an attempt to rescue anyone who could have possibly survived the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. For the next 24 plus hours we did our best. I have the Greatest Respect for our Captain LCDR J. Hobaugh and the whole crew. Just getting underway is a story in itself. One of my proudest moments.

Boat Friend, I don’t think I’ve ever recorded a video during a storm with the lights so intense from a ship. Those beams were so bright and powerful! I hope you enjoy this video as well. It was really exciting for me.

Mike, I admire your dedication. I also admire the lift bridge operator because I would not want to be out in those conditions. The Block was racing through the channel. I think everyone wanted to get docked and find a warm, dry place to relax. I am glad to see the ship come into port safely.

  • @CapitalTransparency

I love how the crew members waved for the camera, seems like they realize your dedication as well !🚢

  • @ILikeGT_101

    You rock Mike

  • @scottburk4083

The sea was angry my friends! Like an old man trying to return soup at a deli.😂😂😂

  • @KellyfromTC

    Thanks for braving the weather!

  • @KenHartman152

Wow.... thanks for braving that stormy weather Mike. The Block looks awesome! Those two beacons of light earned their worth in that storm for the Block... so did the Crew!!! Awesome video Mike!!! ⚓🚢⚓

  • @critterscute3642

That was tremendous! Angry, furious conditions sure made this one for the record books. Thanks for sloshing through the wind and rain to catch this for us. Quite incredible footage! 💨 🌊 🚢 🥇

    Got a whole river where you’re walking😭

  • @user-yi7mg5ig6l

That rain almost looks like snow in the light from the ship! Thanks, Mike.

  • @jeffreystaley5266

Thankfully the wind was on the stern. If it had been blowing on the beam, I suspect the captain may have tried to anchor out in a sheltered location. The crew will rest well on this night. Thanks for recording this in horrible weather.

  • @colinklang

The captain just cruised right in like it was routine. Thanks for the video.
