    About this Visit:
    They arrived Duluth October 02, 2023 at 18:09 for the 25th time this season to load 68k tons of coal at SMET. This is their 16th load of Coal for the season. They arrived at SMET at 18:56 and began loading coal. They finished loading October 03 at 08:09 and departed SMET. They departed Duluth at 09:00, heading to St Clair to deliver the cargo.
    The M/V American Century was formerly known as the Columbia Star. Columbia referred to the brig Columbia that carried the first cargo of iron ore through the St. Mary's Falls Canal in 1855. Star referred to the star that Oglebay Norton vessels formerly carried on their smoke stacks. The vessel came under the ownership of American Steamship Company in 2006.
    The M/V American Century sailed its maiden voyage in ballast from Sturgeon Bay, WI in May of 1981 to load iron ore pellets at Silver Bay, MN for delivery in Lorain, OH.
    Construction
    The M/V American Century was built by Bay Shipbuilding Corp. at Sturgeon Bay, WI in 1981.
    Equipment
    The M/V American Century is powered by four 3500 HP General Motors Electro Motive Division (EMD) diesel engines. The vessel uses a conveyor system below its cargo holds to transport cargo to a "loop conveyor" system that elevates the cargo to the massive deck-mounted boom conveyor. For maneuvering in port, the vessel is equipped with 1,500 HP bow and stern thrusters.
    Service
    The M/V American Century is primarily used for long-haul transport of iron ore pellets and western coal on the Great Lakes.

    I seem to remember in Drivers Ed, a 1000 ft cargo vessel always has the right of way...🤔

    It is amazing to me that pleasure craft don't understand that 5 short blasts mean GTFO of the way. Seven must mean the freighter captain is pissed off. A fiberglass boat would get crushed like a paper cup against that thing, plus the freighter has absolute right-of-way. Even the bridge told them to GTFO 🙂

      Judging by how they spoke, they didn't seem to be playing with a full deck.

      @@PaulScinocca I have to tell you Paul, I just love your channel. My dad sailed on ore freighters when he was a kid (the J. Pierpont Morgan, Thomas W. Lamont, and William A. Irvin). This is a way for me to connect with him now. He used to tell me stories of coming out of Twin Harbors or Duluth in November, beating ice off the decks with "idiot sticks", having to do deck watch tied to the rail by rope, swaying in a heavy sea at night listening to rivets shearing off in the holds as the boat flexed. Must have been terrifying for a boy who'd never left the Thumb of Michigan growing up. I'm hoping to make it up to Duluth one day before I get too old. Until then, I'll enjoy your videos. Thanks for the work you put into them!

      At least five short blasts is the Rule 34 (d) signal where the vessel is not certain others are taking necessary action to avoid collision. He can see the small craft and has zero ability to avoid collision

    Random night in 2014 when I was down at canal Park the James R Barker came in so fast I thought maybe something was wrong. He was going about the same knots if not a touch faster. Crazy when you see it in person.

    • @PaulScinocca
      @PaulScinocca  Před 6 měsíci +4

      Indeed it is! They really have to know the limits of the vessel, its a tight turn after the bridge! You can run out of water pretty quickly in that harbor.

  • @tuxedotservo
    @tuxedotservo Před 6 měsíci +10

    You know you've annoyed the captain when he's using 7 horns instead of 5 for the warning alert.
    Six short and a long is the general emergency signal. 7 short? The "you've really annoyed the captain" signal, I guess.
    Seems like people "try" the Century - not the first video with her giving a personal craft the horn.

    Amazing that's like the length a top fuel dragster runs. I live in SE- Michigan fish around the Detroit river were it meets lake Erie and you see a lot of ships around there. One time we were in front of the Monroe Edison plant and the Paul R.Tregurtha was unloading coal we went by her and she was light in the water and sitting way high ! It was Crazy how high up the deck was from us and actually it's pretty scary how big she is close up but So Awesome ! One day I'd love to go to Duluth and see the lift bridge and walk to the Light House :) Love the Great videos you post !

    Why has the owners (operators) of these small pleasure craft, sailboats, etc. not been reported to the Coast Guard for appropriate action? Whether a freighter is approaching the canal at a slow or fast speed, it should have the space needed to reach its destination without the worry of having to avoid some idiot who thinks it's cool to cause this kind of stress to the captain and crew of these huge ships. I don't understand why people behave in this manner and why there are no consequences for their actions.
