Found On Roadside FIXED? The MYSTERY Ford Ranger Is DONE

- I bought a 1993 Ford Ranger XLT for $300 after a friend had wrenched on it and couldn't get it running. We went through all the usual stuff the first day, and could not make the truck run. In the last video we narrowed the issue down to a bad ECU after a massive amount of troubleshooting. I found a used one for $51 and ordered it immediately. We swapped it out, put a radio in it, fixed the rearview mirror, and the truck is ready to go on down the road!

One of those trucks is a little nicer than the other
You're not kidding, heck it even runs better and we haven't really started 😂
This white truck was like seeing a beautiful woman walk buy
Thanks for saving a ranger JR. We need more of those little beater trucks around. :D
Planted in PR : for sure !
No we don't.
Planted in PR have a 93 identical to it. Can’t kill it. Had it 26 yrs, everyday work truck. Best vehicle I have ever owned.
@@samrumade9429 I have a 93 Ranger with the 6-cylinder. Still runs great with 247,000 miles. Drove it today!!
I have a 94 with 204k miles . Still runs like a champ
Man your channel is awesome! I'm watching all your videos, since the old ones.
You are helping me to improve my English! My best regards from Brazil!
That's awesome! Thank you for watching 🍻
@@WatchJRGo If one day you decide to visit Brazil, you will be very welcome! Here we have a lot of fun cars you would love hahaha
Yep, he speaks good American English, even us non-Americans can understand him absolutely 100%.. A great CZcams channel to watch to improve your everyday American English skills.
I just want to say thank you for making this series. My father and I were planning to fix his '93 XLT over the summer, which hasn't been driven for 5-6 years. Right now we know it's leaking coolant from the head gasket and the parking brake seizes up and won't let go (we have to use a chuck to park it on hills). But if we have similar issues getting it started again we can just reference your videoes!
Cheers from the cheery midwest!
Jesus loves you alot trust in His death 4 salvation and be saved from eternal hell
I bought a 95 Ford Ranger 20 years ago out of someone's yard. Had the clutch rebuilt and I still drive it everyday.
They are built Ford Tough!
I seen stereos like that before. Lets just leave the factory connector in and splice another one into it. The last one I ran into was a 93 s10 blazer that they stole the glove box light to provide the 12 on all the time. What they didn't know and I did. A hidden fuse fixed the correct wire. So they trashed the glove box light for no reason.
Ah stupid person mod on old cars.. The modern cancer of used items...
Thanks for wrapping this up. First one of your videos I watched was the first Ranger video, now I am addicted.
What JR says off camera: We need to sell this hooptie Ranger. I think it's giving me depression.
hoovies garage.................did someone say hooptie
Thanks for giving us closure. 😊
Glad to see the ranger getting finished up. Hope your doing well!!
I'm glad the ECU fixed it! I'm glad you made this update video!
I love the NES reference. I remember my kids and I doing that. Lol
My sister inherited my dad's 99 Ranger in 99. She drove it a couple of years and it got to where it wouldn't start. A few guys have tried to get it running with no success. I hope the fix is as easy as this one was. Thanks for posting this video it will hopefully save me lots of time on diagnostics.
Good to see another ranger video
Thank you for the Ranger videos. I have this exact truck, had had it 26 years, and it needs some work. My Dad had a '65 F-100, and I'd love one of those, too.
Really quite fond of the Ranger lol. Great project!
Glad you got it done! Had one in the 90's i loved, but had transmission issues.
Your throughness in doing a proper job and not just doing it half ass is what we have come to expect and we appreciate. It. Diligence pays off. Looking forward to the next video. Try and get Jared and Gabe to do guest appearances. LOL
JS West : really liked your comment. So true !
Thanks for filming
hope you and yours (Josh) are staying safe, and thank's for providing entertainment during shelter in place. Ford Danger would make a great vehicle for high school students or underprivileged family. I appreciate that you work mostly on cars for the other 99% of us who are not own a Bugghati, Ferarri, Mazarati, Lamborgini.
Jesus loves you alot trust in His death 4 salvation and be saved from eternal hell
Since we all have to be holed up anyway, you should get something really cool to work on in your garage. Maybe like an Audi R8, oh wait...
Glad to see it fixed
Now I have closure, thanks. Someday I hope to have Audi closure lol
I have an Arizona '05 Ranger, 2wd with only 65,000 miles. 2wd, 5-speed 3.0 V6. It is a former farm truck and has absolutely no rust. Runs great and everything works. It is an Edge model which means it has the 4wd suspension even though it is not a 4wd. I love it!
Funny, I thought Toyota had that gimmick on lockdown with the Pre-Runner Tacoma. Now days(since the last Tacoma redesign) all models, 2wd or 4wd sit on the same chassis/suspension, there is no more "Pre-Runner" because there is no more lower ride height 2wd chassis/suspension model.
Intermittant ECU issues are *THE WORST*… I had one on a Mystery Dodge… I probably could have re-worked some power transistors, but I didn’t want to spend a week de-potting the thing.
Nice. I like the Ranger. My dad has a 1992 4-cyl Ranger. She just runs and runs and runs... and I might have mentioned this before...
Brilliant work thanks for the content
Awesome little series with this truck. I recently picked up an 89 F150 for 500$. The guy said it needed a fuel pump. It was out of gas. Someone that worked on it before really did a number on it. The speakers were gone out of it, part of the door where the speakers mounted was shredded to house bigger speakers. Wiring for the speakers had gotten janked up and the factory harness for the radio was cut. Wires were still there but what a mess. They also pulled the wiper fluid motor for some reason and the tubing. Cheap fixes but just weird stuff. Not bad for a 500$ truck that runs.
I am happy that you fixed the truck - I was very disappointed that you did not really fix it in the last video.
Good video. That truck will make someone happy. 👍🇺🇸👍🇺🇸
This video probably saved 5 Ford Rangers
My son just got a ranger. Free no opt does not run. Thank you for the video
Definitely had to go through this one... crazy that it ended up being the ECU. So much for an easy flip! :) Definitely will be a great truck for the next owner.
i really enjoyed this content because it was a mystery. fun to follow along as you guys fixed it!! and my first truck was a tacoma, so i have love for the "smaller" trucks.
I use to have a blue 93 Ford Ranger. Bought it when I graduated college. I drove for about 14 years . Hardly ever had any trouble with it . I miss it
Take apart the old computer, I want to see what failed.
we have to go deeper
Russian repair.
Yes!
Scooter30FTW Russian repair is bang like a old Ruski tv , trust me I know
Made in China ...
My hands started to hurt watching JR work in that tight spot lol..
Nice work on the Ranger.
Thx for doing the ranger professor
I got an old Ranger like that, did a little work, been my to work vehicle for 3 years now, with no other problems
I have a personal love, hate relationship with this truck. I had one for about 10 years. So much money and time put into it
So it is indeed trash
@@kitecattestecke2303 yeah but they're fun and was a good learning experience
Hell yeah! This is cool!!!
Damn JR that F100 is just a beauty, I know your gonna do right by that truck! Make her shine nicely eh.
Good video man I'm really glad you finished it I hate to see you let stuff go unfinished, like that you know you're better than that anyway guys please stay safe
What a great truck.
Awesome, you bought it back a life. Drive and sound. Where you find all your good deals such as this truck, Scion xB, and the Geo.
I want to film more videos when I get a car fix.
Like your video as usual.
Little did JR & Josh know that Jake would be a Ford Ranger man as well. 👨🔧
A lot of knowledge here!
Blame Josh's endless Ford knowledge 💯
Liked the NES reference and "blowing off the pins".
The danger ranger is back!! I figured it had something with the Ecu. My Jeep did the same exact thing. Took me forever to diagnose it.
1:34 that disappointment on your face when your buddy can't see
Being out of work right now sucks. I'd love to buy this truck if given the chance. My daily is dying and I've always wanted a truck. Love your content JR!
Yer all right. Way to send it off the right way.
I have the same head unit on my truck and I love it
Now it’s properly fixed!
Did like the ranger used to have a 97 manual shift good solid truck 🙋👍
I just fought that same stereo issue! Daisy chained speakers held together with residential wire nuts. Fortunately, they didn’t hack the factory harness but it was still terrible to see!
Been following Watch JRgo all along and simply love your channel. What is different than what other channels are doing is that you are fixing cars that we all drive everyday. Unlike other channels with expensive or exotic cars, we can all benefit from the knowledge that you share here. Keep it coming 👍👍 BTW, I am a subscriber and a fan from Karachi Pakistan.
Love the videos keep it up!
Awesome stuff as always
Great ESD wrap on the junkyard ECU.
Great video and I would love to have a Ford Ranger now.
I had a 96 2.3 drove it for many years ended up selling it with over 298,000 miles bought it new with 14 miles on it in 97. Ran like a dream but body was rough. The Northeast everything gets rusty with salt.
Love these hooptie car repairs and such.
Had a 2005 at work. Over 300k on it... Holes through the body, nothing resembling exhaust and burned a pint of oil per tank of gas.... But I couldn't kill the damn thing. It'll be a good beater for ya.
I'd buy the Barney the Ranger truck... need a truck, too far away (about 2 hrs), oh, and we're on "plague lockdown"!
Hey!!! I have that same radio in our GMC lol
From experience, I am willing to bet that hack job on the stereo contributed to the issues with that truck. Use to see it all the time. Put in radio, vehicle no longer runs. The feed back into the electrical system can be very damaging. Especially if they have no clue what they are doing. I am just glad for the E.I.A. wiring color code system. I hated chasing down wires that changed colors 3 or more times. Even with schematics it was a nightmare.
I enjoyed this Ranger series. Be interesting to know what you get for it and how long it takes to sell.
Jesus loves you alot trust in His death 4 salvation and be saved from eternal hell
"and as you guys know, I can't leave things alone..." lmao. That's why I watch your videos, "ATD-attention to detail"
t rot : gotta respect that attention to detail hey
That ECU mounting position is noted for water intrusion. Have seen mechanics install plastic hood over the ECU.
By "Special Stuff" do you mean a couple quarts of Marvel's Mystery Oil and a couple of SS badges?
Nice video bro 👌
Little cheap Rangers are always awesome
I wish I was closer to you so you could fix my radio O who am I kidding hell fix my whole truck lol.
6:12 Careful, that’s how it spreads...
Truck Central : gloves on when your out and about... thanks for
Reminding us all .
Change the driver side sun visor JR 👍
"Goldeneye will stop crashing" LMAO. The classic blow on the cartridge to fix it.
I’d love to have that truck. Been hoping I can find one local.
I had a 95 ranger stx extended cab. I miss that truck
I have same truck but with a 7ft bed and i just hit 478,000 on the clock. 2.3l 5sp 2wd. I bought almost 10 years ago with 225000 for a daily to work. I lay asphalt for a living so always had a separate vehicle for work so not to hog up a descent car. My little ranger has been as reliable as a hammer with just regular maintenance. I change timing belt n water pump around every 70,000
Every Ford I've ever had you pump the gas pedal two times and it started right up most times it stayed running to 💯
If you have to touch the pedal with fuel injection you have a problem.
@@markallen4458 my Pontiac GXP with the supercharged 3.8 did that until I deep cleaned the throttle body. Had tons of carbon just inside the blade. Yay for the PCV.
@@markallen4458 you are opening the butterfly on the throttle body which has tps sensor senses the butterfly is open your vehicle won't start from the wrong air to fuel mixture.
I think Josh was totally expecting a gift...but instead he opened it and was sad it was the ecu 😆
I still love that F-100
The ECU failing is a common failure in first generation Rangers and Explorers.
honor harrington why would starter fluid keep it running with bad ecu though?
@@badderthanyou They can fail in many ways. In this unit it was the fueling that was doing something in start but failing in run. Another unit might fail in the ignition section or the sensor inputs. They are close to 30 years old now.
Use garillia glue to hold rear view mirrow on
It will set up in a week and hold long time did mine 2 years ago its still holding
Open up the old ECU and see if the caps are leaking.
I was thinking that if JR was in lockdown due to COVID, he would actually have to work on the R8, but it seems like this is not the case. :)
I wish you were closer, I would buy the ranger.
RC Hobbyist Extreme road trip...
Until I discovered your channel and became interested in your Ranger "series" I had not noticed how many Rangers of that generation were owned and operated by people in our neighborhood....I know of six to date and all but one was purchased used by their owners. Only one, painted at the factory a kind of gold color, has not held up very well to South Carolina "sun blasting". One of them is a twin to yours while the others range from forest green, dark blue, a kind of mud brown, and one white one that I strongly suspect started it's career as a government fleet truck. All of those trucks are daily drivers and as I was told by their owners when I asked....They are not sale....NONE of them have less than 100,000 miles on the clock as I type and all are serviced by their owners in their back yards on a regular basis.
Here we go
The sun visor's a dealer breaker. lol
I would have liked to have seen how you fixed that speaker wire harness
Not gonna lie, that's a dope paint color
Guess that truck was not built for any kind of deep water. You get it up the wheel, that hole will sink that new ECU. Just don't take it off road at all. Then again, who in their right mind would take this old truck off road at this point? Then again, no social distancing where he is? Lucky him - we are under lockdown here on the east coast.
Good find! Can't beat a $50 repair. How much did you get (sell) for the truck?
Wish I could get my hands on that ranger
Next time you cold start the classic f100. Push the pedal to the floor 1 time and release. Then hit the key.
That's basically what the owner's manual says for that classic.
How much for the ranger ? I have a 93 ... As well and i could be interested in getting a different one
I'm really curious what failed in the old ECU. I had a '92 Civic ECU that produced a no-start condition from a capacitor on the power rail having exploded. $7 in parts on DigiKey replaced all the caps and it's been fine ever since. I know newer Nissans also like to lose their idle control from their FET arrays exploding.
What happened to the r8
Fix it up. I love old Rangers
