using snow from my garden, easy ice dyeing method for yarn and fabric - experiment with dye

- In this video, I take advantage of an unexpected snowstorm to try out ice dyeing on wool yarn. I walk you through the entire process, from preparing the yarn to creating the dye mixture to placing the ice and yarn in a container to the final reveal of the dyed yarn.
Ice dyeing is an easy and fun way to create unique and beautiful patterns on fabric, and it's a great way to experiment with colour combinations. The best part is that no two pieces will be exactly the same, so you'll have a one-of-a-kind creation every time.
I'll show you how I used Landscape dyes to achieve vibrant, saturated colours on my wool yarn, but you can use different types of dye and fabrics to achieve different effects. Once your yarn is dyed, you can use it to knit or crochet a cosy scarf, hat, or sweater, or even create a decorative wall hanging or tapestry.

Spinning IS weird. The German word for a niddy noddy is "Haspel" and it is the source for the German word for "to get muddled" or "to flounder" or "to splutter" which is "sich verhaspeln", as in "to make a mistake when using the niddy noddy".

With normal dyebaths the purpose of adding the vinegar later is to ensure a more even colour - you wait until a lot of the dye has soaked into the fibres and then add the activator so you don't end up with it darker on the outside where the dye hit it first (which is also why soaking it in water beforehand is important, so you don't end up with white spots in the middle where the water didn't get to. In textiles class in college we put wool to soak overnight in big buckets of water with a drop of detergent to break the surface tension. We also have to keep carefully moving it around with tongs while dyeing, wether it's with acid dyes on the stove, or reactive dyes in a big plastic vat.)
I've never done ice dyeing but I've done a lot of other kinds, and the easiest way to get mottled yarn like that is just to cover a table with a plastic sheet or tray, lay out your pre-vinegar'd skeins on a few layers of plastic wrap, and just daub the dye liquid on with those sponge brush thingies. Then we'd wrap them up in the plastic wrap and steam them in pots.

I love how these turned out. I have the worst time with dyes. I can never get them to set, at least not in the things I want to stay dyed. Nice job!

Also, you might not be able to grow indigo, but woad is a gorgeous plant, and surprisingly well behaved! (as in, once you've planted some, it'll come back year after year with no work on your part, which is quite handy ^^)
Plant dyeing can be surprisingly lowkey. You can use time in place of heat to extract the dyestuff, for instance. And then more time instead of heat to dye the fibre/fabric. I dyed two tunics with soursobs over a few months - a month to let the dye extract from the flowers, and then another month each sitting in a pot in my laundry. All I had to do was shake the dye extraction twice a day, and then stir the tunics in the dye bath every time I went past/thought of it/could be bothered. MUCH easier for me than trying to organise a giant pot of simmering liquid for an entire day.
Cool project! I was actually wondering about wool with this method! Lol I probably have more than would fit in the microwave with fabric though.

Ash, it is March and I have been around long enough to know that this sort of weather DOES happen in the UK. Love the colours they came out really nice, look forward to see what you turn the wool into.

I enjoyed watching your video. I found a large salad spinner at my local thrift store to spin water out of my skeins and it works great. Please consider wearing a mask with dye powders for safety? Cheers.

I believe you can grow indigo in UK. Lots of fb groups do. I tried and failed once, will try again!
But if I wanted the seeds that would have helped!
