The Ultimate Terrain Guide For HOI4

- This video is intended to give HOI4 players a deeper understanding of terrain and why it is so important. For many the terrain types are overlooked or misunderstood leading to massive problems that can sometimes not even be identified. If you have never sat down to truly look at how terrain works this guide will identify the major components it effects such as combat width, division statistics, supply and attrition, movement, and more. Hearts of iron 4 is a complicated game with hundreds if not thousands of hours needed to truly understand and master it. Thankfully I have sold my soul to the paradox gods and hope to be able to use my embarrassing hour count to teach you what I wish I know earlier. If you have any questions or issues leave a comment!

This channel seriously needs more views and subscribers, your tutorials and guides are really helpful for new and intermediate players! I like how you show icons and numbers on screen which really helps a visual learner like me.
Though, I'm not new at all and this is still helpful. Well not specifically this one, but ones like design and such.
as a person that has ignored terrain for 2 years, i see this as an absolute win
dude this is sick - best HOI content out there
Ah, the dread Pripjet-Sümpfe (Pinsk Marshes)! The Wehrmacht's "Dead Marshes." Don't look in the water!! Thanks for the guide; very well done and most comprehensive.
Heads up. The combat widths in the video are the old combat widths. The new combat widths are completely different.
Good video.
Having watched all 12 videos in this playlist is going to make my brain explode.
excellent guide, learned much from this, thanks!
Here when 3.6k views and 14.3k subs. As someone who doesn't actually play, these videos are the best thing ever/the next best thing
Thanks for this useful Video.
Thank you 🙏
I will never fight in muddy marshes and shall recall my air missions during sandstorms. Also this does not give me confidence for the upcoming dlc, jungle fighting going to be brutal!
Great Video brother
give this man a cookie this video solved all of my wrong doings lol
There should be hybrid terrains.
For example, the Ardennes Forest in Luxemburg has lots of hills and forests.
Many deserts have mountains and the jungle in parts of South America and elsewhere is also very mountainous (as mountainous as many mountain tiles in Europe).
In reality lots of jungle could also be marsh and also be hills or mountains. Lots of forest tiles could be hills or even mountains (like the Smoky Mountains).
Trying to invade the completely forested Smokey Mountains in the US would be a lot harder than trying to invade Iceland that has almost no trees. Sure, there are mountains there but they would be anywhere as near as much of a problem unless invaded in the winter.
How does this video only have 2.5k viewers?
The part about terrain defense (on engineers for example) bonuses giving breakthrough is wrong. It only affects the stats on the defensive. Engineers do not give +10% hill breakthrough, sadly. You should watch cloak71's video on the terrain stats.
16:21 forgot to edit it out? 😅
Missed that one 😂
Did I understand correctly that depending on the type of terrain surrounding a supply hub, it might sometimes be better to use horses instead of trucks for supplies?
Yes, if you are low on trucks and fighting in a high attrition area for them like marhes or desert going to cav will allow you to sustain the trucks needed on other fronts or to build up stockpiles to be able to use them later for a proper push.
fuck I’ve never thought about terrain once
Most dont, its so important
I prefer to otpmize my infantry divisions to fight in forests using 15 width, since they almost as common as plains, and there is no reason to otpmize your milirary to fight in a place where the enemy has no defensive stats.
If you put a unit in a jungle tile and don't move them, fight with them or defend with them, will they still lose equipment?
Not if they have supply
I believe increased truck attrition still applies, as does the terrain penalties to supply throughput but if your have enough its fine.
Where's your video going over supply? and temperature?
In development
@@Hammurabae Cool!
Narration screwup at 16:20 lol
