Even Mark Uses Signal...Why Don't We??

- Did you know that even Mark Zuckerberg uses Signal? During a Facebook leak in 2021, Zuckerberg’s number was leaked which showed that his number was associated with an account on Signal. Honestly, this isn’t all that surprising because it would be wise for any business owner to be familiar with the competition, but it does beg the question: Is Signal really a serious alternative to WhatsApp. Well, for starters, it was created by one of the same founders: Brian Acton. Brian actually gave up $850 million in Facebook stock comp to take a moral stand and start Signal with security researcher Moxie Marlinspike. Since then, Signal has seen pretty strong growth into the 10s of millions of users but it’s still nothing in comparison to WhatsApp. This video examines the rise of Signal and whether Signal can actually dethrone WhatsApp.

Hey guys, wanted to clarify something. When I said that the security and encryption of WhatsApp and Signal are equivalent, I was looking at from the lens of external attacks. If you're looking for privacy from Facebook themselves, Signal (an open source platform with no profit incentive) is obviously the superior option.
Even when you look at "external attacks" then Signal is much better protected then WhatsApp, because they don't collect and store the metadata that WhatsApp stores. So this data can't be leaked, hacked or handed over to authoritarian regimes trying to hunt down dissidents (which I would all qualify as "external attacks").
Just because WhatsApp uses the Signal protocol as well doesn't means that your data is equally protected. So from my point of view your statement is false no matter through what lens you are looking through.
Other than that: nice video :)
Signal is the only serious option, whatsapp cannot be trusted.
Trusting any emcryption that is not open source would be a big mistake.
This is a very poorly researched video.
0. Signal is OPEN SOURCED and verified to not have backdoors. WhatsApp? YOu take it on faith that the NSA hasn't compelled a backdoor.
1. Signal has way better disappearing messaging support (down to just a few seconds up to a full month).
2. Signal has ENCRYPTED GROUP CHATS.
3. Recently, Signal added usernames so now your phone number isn't disclosed in group chats.
4. Even more.
thank you for your comment! I agree with you! He should have done more research to finish the story on the differences since it was published like an hour ago, today.
He also has misspellings in a lot of his graphics.
Yes I totally agree with you. This guy now is a joke.
All that you have described also applies to Telegram for a long time and all those features that are now coming to signal have also been on Telegram since forever.
@@Remigrator except encrypted group chats
Every time your status changes, every time your typing bubble appears in someone's chat, every message, picture or audionote you send has metadata that is not encrypted, THAT is used to make money of you.
Facebook has to show the FBI a huge pile of paper when they get a court order because they have that data.
Signal only knows your number and sign up date.
Do not underestimate how far big tech companies go to collect as much as they can without breaking laws.
yes finally someone with a brain omg
It is incorrect that there is no difference in privacy between Signal and WhatsApp. Examples: (1) contact discovery (Meta knows the contact list of each user, while Signal doesn't); (2) group memberships (Meta knows the members of each group; while Signal doesn't); (3) local backups (WhatsApp stores a daily local backup of all chats and keeps old backups for a week, to help law enforcement against the user's best interest).
Signal also stores two things: when you created your account, and when you last used it.
WhatsApp probably knows everything about your entire bloodline.
And another obvious difference is the fact that Signal is Open Source. Both the client and the server.
I've been using Signal exclusively for many, many years now. It has gotten much, much better then before and there really isn't any disadvantage to using it, while the privacy advantage is enormous.
Q : Why don't we ?
A: NETWORK EFFECT
Have a nice day 👋
Yes, Signal seems good but i don't know anyone who uses it
True hahaha
@@tomlxyz It's pretty simple: Hey, you asked to join my event? No problem, here is an invitation to a dedicated event chat. Oh, you don't use Signal…? It's still doable, but then it's a bit hassle and you're missing out on 90% of the info…
Be the change you want to see. If somebody wants to message me, they can either use my email (on Proton) or Signal. I will not compromise my privacy for anyone's convenience. I've now have pretty much everyone I care about on Signal so I really see no disadvantage.
@@FalkonNightsdale i don't do events?
Doesn't Signal store WAY LESS data than WhatsApp?
Signal is structured as a non-profit organization, and their finances, including employee salaries, are publicly disclosed as part of their commitment to transparency. Signal is an open-source messaging app known for its focus on privacy and security. Its codebase is available on GitHub, allowing anyone to review the project. This transparency helps ensure the app's integrity and security.
Whatsapp has none of these things, there could be a master key to decrypt all the messages and nobody would know.
Title: Mark uses signal
First minute of the video: He probably doesn't use Signal
You missed a detail. WhatsApp‘s encryption isn‘t the same as Signal‘s. WhatsApp collects a lot of metadata, device data, contacts list, device info, location and soooo much more.
Actually there is an option to turn it off in what's app itself that was the aggreement made with what's app founders when they sold it to Facebook

You've said signal is dying or is dead in several videos, You even made a whole video about it, why are You doing this now? I am a signal user and it's quite frustrating to see You say both "You shouldn't use the platform it's dead" and "Oh, You should use the platform. It's great."

Cuz now it’s popular enough to where he considers it good 😂
Something can be a great product, but lack significant traction at the same time
Signal isn't made by the enemy. Before WhatsApp added several features in 2022-2024 (particularly weak disappearing messaging), Signal was far superior for privacy.
I use both apps. It's all about network effect. People will go where there friends are.
Signal is the non-plus-ultra on how it manages security keys and how it stores and transfers data. WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted, and that's it. The backups and metadata harvesting are the major pitfalls of WhatsApp, and also the way of how it manage keys change when the user replace the phone. There is no contest between the two, and saying that WhatsApp and Signal are equivalent from a security perspective, is simply not true...
I completely get where you’re coming from. But how much of the general public cares about the nuanced security differences and implications that you’re referring to?
The search for privacy in communication doesn't end with E2E encryption. E2E encryption is where your adventure starts. E2E encryption means that your communication is protected against weirdo in-between the two points can access your communication but it doesn't mean that it prevents weirdos from accessing it at one of the end points. This is where WhatsApp is sus ah.
@@LogicallyAnswered
When such a big youtube channel tells them that there is no difference, general public will never understand or care about the differences 🙄 being unbiased and factually correct should be the key, and it doesn't matter what general public cares or understands. This video seems very rushed and unprepared or intentionally made to make Whatsapp look like a "good" and "secure" platform, which is not even close... Is LogicallyAnswered getting paid by Meta? :-)
He might be just lacking the knowledge on that part. This case is also apparent with channels that covering abroad range of topic. You know, the old saying just bcs you mastered the internet doesn't mean you always know everything
@@Ba1tuks being unbiased is just impossible
Mark is playing the long game. Keep giving WhatsApp for free without monetization until the competition drowns to death, then turn monetization on once there is no competition.
Great video as always.
Thank you as always Balpreet!
Messaging is also somewhat similar to social media in the sense that you're a bit trapped into what your friends and family are using.
Im not sure if Signal has the same problem as WhatsApp with all the scam messages being sent from business accounts?
Great video, I had no idea WA's cofounder is one of the big donator of Signal, that's great.
I once used signal n it did the job but there wasn’t just enough people there for me to desert WhatsApp for it
When the app is free, you're the product.
look at the court orders signal have had they have nothing :p
So is every free and open-source app like that, huh? Have you ever heard of donations? VLC and OBS are two free and open-source programs that don't sell your data, have a huge user base and not only do these still exist, but they get regular updates. I know it's hard to believe, but there are apps that respect your privacy and don't monetize your usage in any way. It's sadly not the norm.
This is a false statement in this case
Thanks for another interesting video.
Well now messenger also have encription. And it is even based on signal protocol (with improvements to chat history)
The removal of SMS made it lose a significant appeal in keeping it on my phone even when there's almost no one I know who uses it over WhatsApp in Indonesia.
I miss that too, I liked the idea of having my 1to1 chats into one place, SMS included.
I know Beeper Mini is working in adding SMS and RCS to its 1 place for all your chats solutions, but we have to wait (and pay).
Element One are bridging a lot of chats too but all I saw about SMS is simply a bot to relay SMS to a matrix account, it's not there yet AFAIK.
I'm currently using Google messages for my SMS to be able to have RCS instead when available, but the switch between the two, depending on if you and your recipient have data or not, is quite messy.
Let's hope standardisation will come one day to help those services talk to each other seamlessly, and have RCS completely replace SMS on tower cells all around the world (but maybe that's just fantasy like ipv6 adoption)
5:56 “lucrative” is back!
Great video.
Signal also provides better privacy from Google because it can provide its own background process to handle notifications without the involvement of Google Play Services. I’m not saying that Google can bypass the encryption of Signal or WhatsApp; I’m instead saying that you must run Google’s invasive software to be able to receive notifications from WhatsApp, but the same is not mandatory for Signal. Receiving notifications from a messaging app is pretty important, especially one that is trying to replace standard text messaging.
For years Signal's base login was phone number. A phone numbe!. What king od privacy is it? The only privacy is free xmpp server. You can use any server you want and all you need is an email address.
Learnt a lot;will switch if my network moves there!
Long time Signal user here. I even managed to lure most of my friends over to Signal from WhatsApp.
Only problem with signal is your friends dont use it, then again thats a good thing because if it becomes mainstream, governments will ban it or force it to be less secure
The main problem with signal is not having my network on it. So the solution I believe is standardizing message using a protocol. I heard rumours about having a protocol such that cross-messaging is possible. This is like SMTP for mail. Even whatsapp company is fine with it in a rumour. I don't know how far are we from that cross-messaging.
I might be wrong or don't understand the issues or the actual concepts, so anyone can explain it to me.
For a minute I thought you were talking about the Javascript ecosystem 😅
Seems they backtracked again because there are company accounts on the stories section.
Y'all should try Signal! My family and several people I know have been using it for years and we all love it!
We are. Since many years.
Signal is the best thing ever.
hi, can you do a video about tax havens. explaining how and why companies have Irish branches, their +ves and -ves. thanks
Signal is not on fdroid and requires you to compromise your privacy by using your phone number to register. If you really care about privacy and security, use something like conversations.
Not necessarily… Not sure, whether it was Seytonic or Mental Outlaw, who elaborated on that some time ago…
Molly . im (hardened security fork) is on fdroid. You still need to have a signal account registered with a phone number but it's doing the job quite well
use matrix
Signal gives enough privacy for the masses. It's not perfect, but more than enough for the masses.
It's the network effect. Why would I use signal if non of my friends uses it.
Isn't "Sessions" the most secure?
I would argue it is better because it requires no phone number and all your messages are onion routed
I feel like if signal goes under, Mark will just go back to plan A, and show targeted ads because thats all he knows how to do.
Bereal was the only Anti Big Tech company that could've gained some attractions! Sadly it didn't ;(
😢
You know, the fastest way to validate your new business idea? FB ads. Why take options away from yourself?
here watch app is more used than sms, i communicate with everyone i know in real live in whatsapp... than it is not possible to change...
no way zuck or any one else will use their personal contact number to check out competitor product
Got to love how all stock hacking footage is just htop and cmatrix opened in tmux.
I am so entrenched in whatsapp with my social circle that moving out is impossible. Signal from my point of view is *just another app*
Don’t care who has what market share.
Not using any Meta apps for messaging.
Ever heard of Session™?
I use Signal. Love it!
Question is not about wheather people know about these or not the main question is if one person cares then he need to convince its surroundings to use signal and thats the game changer. Mark knew about it. May be in next 10 years people will understand and ditch the WhatsApp completely time woll tell the fate
After 2 years of Signal, I had only 3 contacts in it. Plus, the reliability of Signal is far inferior. Messages often came hours later. So in the end I ditched Signal.
WhatsApp end-to-end encryption is not secure? 😓
There’s three ways to make a living in this business, be first be smarter or cheat,
You gave up your first place
Brings a whole new meaning to “virtue signaling.” 🥴
I have installed Signal and a small number of my IT friends use it.
The main issue for me is that most people use WhatsApp.
Instant Messaging is a fragmented market. Some use iMessage if they are in the Apple ecosystem. Some use Messenger from Facebook - probably for convenience. WhatsApp is the most popular. Telegram seems to be popular in Eastern Europe and Russia.
Signal needs to reach critical mass. To do that the people you talk to need to be on it. The question is how to reach that mass. I have no easy answer but right now it seems to be niche product.
From an interface perspective it probably needs to be more like WhatsApp and Telegram. It feels like an open source project that is rough and unfinished.
Signal or SimpleX Chat? Vote Below:
hmm this is interesting
Indeed
It is not accurate. Whatsapp does have access to your data. It encrypted to man-in-the-middle attack, but the central server does have access to your private key. Signal open source has proof that they do not have access to the private key.
its a game of mad peoples .
I don't trust meta to encrypt my messages in a way they can't read it themselves.
2 years late
Love Signal.
What is signal?? Nvm i don't want or need anymore accounts
If Whatsapp would cost something my grandparents wouldnt use it. We have given them android phones without anything about money linked to them and locked up. The best reason for Whatsapp is that everyone uses it. You cant convince everyone with purely logical reasons.
10:03 WhatsApp is not open-source, so by definition it's not secure. Please do basic research before making such statements.
AMEN! He should have done better scripting for this video - very true!!
Hmmm, I don’t think I said that WhatsApp is open source
@@LogicallyAnswered bruh you are trolling... look at the timestamp...
When you mentioned 'you won't get better encryption,' WhatsApp claims to have end-to-end encryption, although there's no concrete proof. Considering its parent company's history, there's place for potential backdoors.
On the other hand, Signal is open source and there is concrete proof
Signal is defenitly the superior option.
The reason Zuck uses signal is to communicate with people who don't have Whatsapp... like me.
Brian Acton gave away whatsapp and wont be able to replicate the success again with Signal...
Matrix is the most sustainable, because it can be self hosted.
...the difference bwtween whatsapp and singal is the linus tech tips style "security guafantee: trust me bro". Which aint exactly convincing out of the mouth of zucc.
Unfortunately the research on this episode is lacking and it lead to invalid conclusions and misleading advice. No, the privacy of WhatsApp is not at all the same as Signal's.
While FaceBook can't access the content of the messages, they have everything else: the social graph, who's talking to whom in private and in groups, when, from where.
All that is very valuable to feed into the main ad targeting product.
Because I don’t talk to android users, so iMessage will suffice.
I use Signal

That's... not how non-profits work. Non-profits are (usually) not run by one core person, like a CEO, but are instead run by a community/group of people. There are some exceptions to this, but it's, uncommon, to say the least.

It is ignorant to claim whatsapp and signal are equivalent. At least I know whatsapp scans the entire contact list on your phone. If you refuse, the permission, you can't use the app.
I am not sure what signal does.
However, both signal and whatsapp requires a phone number to use the service, which itself is a huge security risk.
The only truly private messenger is Session. However, Session severely lacks behind in features.
