    hearing you go through those sounds got me in the zone, i was about to jump out window it sounded so good. i was looking up d-550 that odu college was throwing out just because they had a flood. the device was not damaged and i wanted to see it in action and i run across your joints.
    cheers mate and keep up the passion for the golden era of music which is only alive in our hearts -the 80's

    You make me open my eyes!!, i ever thought Jarre engineered all those sounds

  •  Před 9 lety +7

    The MT32 is more like the D20 or D5. It was really fun to have in the 80s and 90s because all the Sierra games had special sounds and songs made for this module. So if you had it, they would upload new sounds to the MT32 (or d5 in my case) and they would have awesome songs in the games. Also as a pro, you got LOADS of cool sounds. Some that I still use in my songs :)

    • @looneyburgmusic
      @looneyburgmusic Před 8 lety

      +Kristian Blåsol The MT-32 is not like a D-20/10/5, it *is* a '20/10/5. Roland basiclly stripped out as much as they could, changed over to the cheapest parts they could get, stuffed it all in a desktop case, and called it the MT-32...

    •  Před 8 lety

      Sorry. Should've said it uses the same sound engine then. All the models mentioned have the same sound engine but more or less of other features. The d-20 had a sequencer, disk drive, and drum machine. The d-10 had only the drum machine (i think) the d-5 was simply a synthesizer with a keyboard. It had drums sounds but no drum machine. And the mt-32 was simply the sound module. If they used other cheaper parts I dont know. The box itself was made of ugly computer beige, probably because it was supposed to be used with computers. And the sounds given by many sierra games still were very cool.

    • @looneyburgmusic
      @looneyburgmusic Před 8 lety +1

      Kristian Blåsol No need to apologize, wasn't trying to give you an attitude about it... ;-) I know just about everything there is to know about the Roland D-series synths... Basically you're 100% right... the only full "LA" synth-engine is in the D-50/550. The D-20/10/110/5/MT-32 are all "second generation". They all share the same expanded PCM sample set, and are all missing the advanced LFO's and effects that the D-50/550 has. A patch made on any of the 2nd Gen. D's will work on all the others. The MT-32 is the worst of the bunch though, because it doesn't save patches when it's powered off, and the DAC's are horrible and cheap and noisy. But besides that they are all identical - 8-part multi-timbral, max. 4-partials per voice instead of the 2-partial D-50, very limited on-board effects. You can actually turn a D-10 into a D-20 by just swapping the main-board ROMs - there is just no where to mount the disk-drive, and no way to control the sequencer....

    Saw JMJ destination Docklands ' live?' in 1988. It rained all evening. It was obviously a backing track but considering the weather I can understand. If you watch the video the D50 is absolutely soaked with rain.

    • @Vim-Wolf
      @Vim-Wolf Před 2 měsíci

      I went the day before, it wasn't raining but was bloody cold. Yeh, backing track but the show was great. Wonder what happened to all that very wet kit?

    • @petercarrington948
      @petercarrington948 Před 2 měsíci

      @@Vim-Wolf yeah that gear must have been destroyed by the rain. Newham council made it so difficult for JMJ. I remember seeing a behind the scenes video on CZcams and the health and safety people were a nightmare. And that was in the late 80's! Thanks for your memories mate!

    Your demo here demonstrates why I had to laugh at everyone that complained about Jarre using way too many patches on the Teo & Tea album. Still, a bit sad that we went from the brilliant Zoolook (which Frederique Rosseau claims he wrote huge chucnks of) to almost nothing but patches in under four years :(

  • @looneyburgmusic
    @looneyburgmusic Před 11 lety +1

    Most demos of the MT-32 are from games because that was really all it was good for. Sound wise it is identical to the 2nd generation D's (5,10,20), has the same synth engine inside but with horrible, cheap DAC's that make it sound very noisy... And it is a nightmare to reprogram every time it is turned on... which is why I haven't turned mine on in about 20 years...

    Hi all! I think Jarre was a littke more musically creative with the D50 sounds in Revolutions than he was with the MC808 in Teo and Tea. Sure Rendezvous was a lot of Elka presets... I like both albume either way. Was it true that JMJ was going to releast TT under a different name? That woukd have worked out better.. also to all thoes asking about the patxhes I will try and digg them out and upload.

    When I was originally listening to to Revolutions album I thought Jarre used some mega dollars Emulators, Fairlights, or what have you to get all those signature string sounds on Revolutions Part 1, with all that gritty dripping with harmonics textures. I was shocked 20 years later learning that most of it was done on the D-50. The D-50 is also a very beautifully looking machine. I have one in quite good nick, but couple of keys act up with unintended max velocity response, oh well..

    I believe the MT-32 is more similar to the D-110 then it is to the D-50. The D-50 has a bit more processing power so it can handle more voices simultaneously. Also, it has more ROM so that explains the more extensive sample set.

    Machine Run was originally released on the Geerdes "Volume 1" soundbank. There is a Yahoo Group called "D-50_Soundbanks"s with a files section that has most of these collections available for download - check the folder called "Old ROM cards, disks" , then the Geerdes folder. I also recommend the excellent "D50 Librarian" software too, just save all the patches or bank files to a single folder and the librarian will list the lot as individual patches and remove duplicate's from the list too.

    I don't think there will be any D-50 soft synth any time soon since the D-50 is still commercial (the VC-1 card for the V-Synth and VariOS). I looked for a softsynth, couldn't find one and ended up buying a real D-50 instead. No regrets. ;) I have all these patches, by the way. They're among my favourites.

    It's a situation a bit like the Yamaha An200. It has a great synth section similar to the An1x but most of the videos here don't show that, only show the sequencer part of the An200.

  • @MacXpert74
    @MacXpert74 Před 11 lety

    I have a MT-32 for many years, but it sounds nothing like the D50 as Jarre used it on Revolution. For a start the D50 has a completely different set of samples. The MT-32 doesn't have the "machine run" loop for instance. Also the MT-32 has an issue that the sound "thins out" when there's too much bass in the sound. I don't think the D50 has this issue.
    So I think the MT-32 maybe sounds like 10% like the D50, but certainly not 90% like it.

  • @looneyburgmusic
    @looneyburgmusic Před 11 lety

    If you want to hear what an MT-32 sounds like listen to any of the 2nd generation D's and mix in a bit of hiss-like white noise in the backgound.... they really are not worth the bother with the prices so low for the full D keyboards...

  • @looneyburgmusic
    @looneyburgmusic Před 11 lety

    Nice demo of the D-50, but you are completly wrong about the MT-32. The actual order of LA Synth engines is D-50/D-550 (1st. gen.), D-20/D-10/110,D-5 (2nd. gen. not "full" LA Synth, but they have more pcm samples) then the MT-32 (still not sure what Roland was thinking when they released it...) Any of the 2nd gen. LA synths with some good effects and EQ can come real close to the sound of a D-50, a MT-32 never will....

    Some peoples are against me too, when I write comments to something I'm wondering about for example sounds or effect which you can hear on Jean Michel Jarre cd albums or from his concert :) At the begining on Calpyso 2 from JMJ cd albums Waiting For Cousteau the sound you hear then is from Roland D-5 named Marshy Zone and it is a oceanic fx sound :) But that bouncy sound one of JMJ aides is playing from the Paris La Defense concert I don't know :( That is what I want to know :) It's a cool effect or sound I think :) Maybe you : The Circuit Symphony know what I'm looking for :) It's the sound you hear begin to play at 02:00 on this clip :) czcams.com/video/9OSQnIgT8eo/video.html
