    A video of me playing a lot of presets from Roland D-50. Most of them I have modified though!
    90% of Jean Michel Jarre's great "Revolution" album is made entirely on this synthesizer, so this will dominate the video ;)

    23:57 - Faithless - Insomnia
    Shot in one take with only one cut out :)
    Filmed on Canon EOS 7D and sound recorded on Zoom H4n
    Feel free to give me a tip for more famous presets on this great great 1987 synth, maybe I can do a part 2 someday :)
    ....I am still looking for some Revolution sounds which surely are D-50 but I can't find them.

    It's ironic because JMJ's dad, Maurice Jarre, used the Roland D-50 extensively for his No Way Out (1987) score. I almost wonder if he had his son do the keyboard work. The main title track used the Digital Native Dance patch as well as Pizzagogo and probably other. Those ones definitely stood out to me.

    This was so much fun. I only knew his first two records.
    So I played your video and then checked the song on Spotify to hear what JMJ did on the album.
    That was kind of a fun back and forth 🙂
    .
    A friend of mine had this synth in 1988 while I was still on the Korg-Poly 6
    ( trying to program the damn thing into a dx-7 lol )
    We played a few times together so I got a vibe of the synth, back then.
    But playing this video and the actual album widenes the sonic palette.

    WOW! "Revolutions" is one of my favorite J.M.Jarre (later) albums. Considering his early albums where he experimented with various modular analog synths, it was a true surprise that he actually drew inspiration to the whole album (and the most of "Waiting for Cousteau") from a single keyboard! Either he was swept away by the D-50's digital sound and patches, or it was just a lazy phase...

    I actually connected my D50 yesterday and found how amazing this actually sounds. Great atmospheric patches on them.
    Also tried the D50 librarian with the virtual PG1000 :)

    Perfect! Thanks for sharing this, those sounds are spot on and very signature to the songs they were used for.
    One small thing: that song by Enya is called 'Orinoco Flow'. Cheers!

    Great job. I don't know the D-50 but it's very inspiring. I'm selling my M1 to fund something a little more modern but when I here videos like this it makes me realise that, at the age of 45, my roots are 80's and that's what I love. You won't get these sounds from anything modern.
    Keep up the good work.
    Cheers

      thats true.. I am 46 and still cant get over the 80s synths.. the holy trinity of DX7, D50, M1

      15 and i've recently bought a casio vz-1 (i already have a roland d-50), planning on getting a 90s synth soon (preferably some sort of workstation)!

    • @jml7916
      @jml7916 Před 4 lety +1

      Unless you buy a MODX. It can exactly duplicate anything the DX7 can do and much more.

    • @davealancaruana6727
      @davealancaruana6727 Před 4 lety +1

      @@jml7916 then again an SY99 costs less than an MODX, has superb performance on FM and AWM2 and is built to the level of quality of a Montage - if i'm not mistaken the MODX has a cheap keybed and no aftertouch.

    • @Shred_The_Weapon
