Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 Is Amazing, But It's NOT The Big Flagship Win For Xbox

- Six years ago, Microsoft announced the acquisition of Ninja Theory, and a year later, the company unveiled Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2, positioning it at the time as a showcase title for newly revealed next-gen Xbox hardware. When the sequel was first announced, given how well received the first game was and the impressive track record that Ninja Theory boasted, expectations were high that it would be a statement first-party release for the Xbox Game Studios umbrella, and in the years following the game's announcement, that belief only grew.
After years of development, Hellblade 2 is finally out now, and where its visuals, storytelling, and technical accomplishments are concerned, there's absolutely no doubt whatsoever that the action-adventure game is an experience worth celebrating. At the same time, however, the game has legitimate issues, which means that though it's a genuinely well-made game that I personally would recommend to many (as would many others, based on the overall positive critical reception the game has enjoyed), it's not the astounding, statement, attention-grabbing first-party release that many had expected it would be. - Hry

Just finished the game like 2 hours ago, Hellblade 2 is marketed as a cinematic game and they absolutely delivered on that, by far one the most cinematically beautiful games I’ve played and the best graphics I’ve seen in gaming, regarding the gameplay, it’s satisfying but simple, extremely smooth animation transitions and very cool looking enemies i just wish the gameplay had more mechanics because it was a bit too simple, the game was also very short but somehow you still get invested in characters especially Senua, as a huge PlayStation fan i liked the game a lot but if we compare it to PS exclusives it’s not that great, but for a gamepass game? Absolutely a steal and a very unique experience (7.5/10 imo)

Glad somebody enjoyed it! How long did it take you?? I thought The graphics and audio were both stunning by my GODDDD was I bored out of my skull. Because I'm a masochist I forced myself to complete the five hour story and afterwards wished I would've watched a CZcams playthrough instead. They're practically the same experience. 2/10 for me, boring as all get out. But I can understand and appreciate this is more a cinematic storytelling "experience" in VG form, nothing wrong with that, just not my type of game
A game like this where 90% of the development was put into the animation and performance capture should have multiple endings and variations and choices. Where did the 5 years of development go???

Microsoft said a long time ago, they are going for Netflix of gaming. That's exactly what it is. No big blockbusters, just a games which good enough to justify 15$ a month price tag
That only makes sense if MS released games like Hellblade every month. Just about no one continues a subscription for a 6.5 hour game. And that's on top of its walking simulator gameplay being extremely niche. For most people Hellblade is just a really good tech demo.
No but COD, Madden, MLB the show, Fifa all on gamepass yearly all top 10 in sales each year will keep most people on gamepass. Then you get these type of titles as a bonus plus all the other 3rd party stuff each month. May alone has lords of the fallen and hellblade thats a win

People wrote off rise of ronin because it had bad graphics, yet advanced/technical gameplay. Now people write off Hellblade because it has simple or “bad” gameplay, but amazing graphics. And now every game is stuck in between, being some FPS shooter or open world grind…. Can’t we just enjoy games for what they are. This was a breath of fresh air for me.
Played it on gamepass. Took me a day to finish. Enjoyed it but would never pay for such a small game. Gorgeous as it is, it's def a walking simulator. As long as you know that going in you should be ok

I had it on my Steam Wishlist because even though I wasn't very impressed with the original, I could see how a sequel could build upon the first one to make the second one really good. However, when I hear the combat is basically the same (boring), the puzzles are the same (boring/frustrating at times), and the story is mediocre, I removed it from my Wishlist and am not interested anymore.
It is without question a beautiful game graphically, but in my opinion, that is probably the LEAST important part of what makes a game good. Performance > Gameplay > Story > Graphics. The team spent six years and tons of money to work on graphics. I'm someone who enjoys shorter games, but if the gameplay, exploration and puzzles are are lackluster as the first, I'm out.
The first Hellblade is one of my favourite games ever. I guess the main difference I feel is in the first game, although short it really felt like you went on a journey, and the ending felt like it really concluded your arc. I didn't feel that as much in this one. I'd gladly take worse graphics for a more impactful story.
I don't know how many times i've seen this exact video been made over the years and the same question is always asked every time, “will Microsoft finally change”, will Xbox finally "be turning a corner".. and after years and years of hearing that question be asked, the answer remains the same….No. Microsoft refuses to learn from their mistakes and instead they double down on them.
Microsoft, as a company, has always thrived even with all of the negative criticism. Windows Vista sucks, hey we simplified it and went back to basics on Windows 7. Windows 8 was so bad we skipped right over 9 and moved on to 10. Every Office update forces people to relearn how to do certain things without really improving anything. But nothing can hurt Microsoft, so they don't even care what you think. They don't care about selling consoles, but pretty soon they'll figure out how to force everyone to pay for Gamepass even if they don't want to.
I wasn't a fan of the game at first just for the simple fact of what it was, but Ninja Theory did amazing work. The immersion they had people experience with this game was something most games can't replicate. Hellblade 2 is meant to make people feel what psychosis is like, and how hard it can be to deal with. Even though Hellblade 2 is short, it does what it's meant to do for the entire time. This game was never meant to be an endless grindy rpg so if you want that out of it then yeah HB2 will disappoint.

Its the lack of actual gameplaying, interaction with the world, being very narrow, no exploration off the beaten path, no combat variety, no upgrades of any kind, and just plain boring.

It's disappointing that this game was announced in 2019, didn't go into full production until 2021, and ended up being only a 5 hour game (that barely has any gameplay). Based on what we know of MS, Hellblade 2's low player numbers are not a good sign. I hope Ninja Theory is able to survive this.

It’s really amazing if you think of it more as a prolonged tech demo. I’d personally love to see more tech demos so devs can test to see what would sell well before committing to a project.

I never felt the expectations said in the earlier part of this vid were ever truly set. It always felt like this was going to be an art house film like game to me. If anything more I feel we would have saw much more marketing and presentations surrounding it.

The story and graphics are fantastic. But what’s really cool is the immersion. Only complaint is the length and lack of fight diversity.

I loved the first game, and this game is not a terrible game, but it definitely doesn't live up to the first, for me personally it was such a let down in terms of the story because it is not as complex, nuanced, or as interesting as the first game. It is a gorgeous game and the story would be great but in a different game in my opinion. Maybe I'm just biased as the first game is my favorite

This is exactly how I felt, its a win for graphics and for Ninja Theory but Xbox is not competing at all with Playstation or Nintendo very well.
This whole "not a win for Xbox" discussion for a game that just came out is nonsense. The game reviewed well with 80+ scores on Meta and Open Critic, and Very Positive score by Steam users. Ninja Theory made the game they wanted to make and Xbox backed them without interfering. It's s a marvelous art piece & groundbreaking achievement in graphics and sound design. It should be celebrated.
Knowing Ninja Theory, I knew they were going for a 4D type movie experience. I keep telling friends to set their expectations low.
The game was that beautiful,but not once did I feel like I was watching a movie I had full control … the game can be slow with walking and talking because they want u to peak at the visuals or they could’ve just made it a cutscene which is what every other game does , it’s different not a movie

Who expected Hellblade 2 to be a flagship game. It was created by a small studio. Its still a great experience if you like these types of games.
MS bought Ninja theory several years ago, by now is bigger than it was and with MS money so that small indie studio is not an excuse, cause Ninja theory is not independent or small as it used too.
Plenty of people expected it, mostly Xbots.
It was literally the game shown with the reveal of the series x, the "world's most powerful console". When they showed 2 minutes of an inengine cutscene, being called "gameplay", in late 2021, ALL THE XBOTS said that it was definitely now a God of War like game.
NOBODY "expected" it when the truth was revealed in January 2024 that it was an "8 hour game" by the studio themselves. Maybe THAT'S the part of your argument you are focusing on but I just explained both time frames.

The combat gameplay is fine, the graphics are great, but the story is so uninteresting and everything between combat is just so boring and makes the game a chore to play. If you like it you like it, that's fine but the game misses the mark for me. It's another game on xbox that is just bearly passable and easily forgettable. That said I didn't like the first either. Gave up on it about 4 hours in.

This was never gonna be god of war. This is without a doubt the more impressive, realistic, and immersive game EVER made. Period. Avowed, Outer Worlds, Elder Scrolls etc will be the big "god of war" for xbox. But this is one of the most original and awesome game i've ever put my time into. Not every game needs to be 50 hrs long. Honestly with how much the general person has to work to live anymore, I prefer a 5 hr game that's this impressive than a 50 hr star field mediocre.

It's a combination that Microsoft yelled from the mountain tops that they bought the studio and then every time they showed their neck system not only was it always there but they literally rolled out the red carpet for it every single time. I honestly think this is the case similar with Rare Of Microsoft buying a company for what it thinks it can do and just based on accolades and pedigree then what a company actually is. I have an odd feeling that both Microsoft and the fan base thought that buying Ninja theory would mean that they would either whether it's a new IP or with Hellblade essentially make the next Uncharted type games for XBox...even though that is not at all what their studio is about.

Its a Marmite game. Some will love it, some will like it, others will hate it. The one's who hate it will most likely be those who bought the game and paid £50 for a few hours of playthrough. If it were half that price, it would be worth it. Just dont expect to have a great time. Its annoying, its very very linear, like almost you cannot deviate at all from the forward path set out and combat is very meh. I'd recommend for the visuals but thats about it, definitely not the price or gameplay and after all - its supposed to be a game.

No, it wasn't a flaship win. That ONE HUNDRED PERCENT died with the 8 (actual 5) hour length reveal in January 2024. It was already clear and done for at that point. Which is funny because every Xbot right now is saying "But why did everyone think it was the big God of War like game???".
Well, YOU THOUGHT IT WAS too because they LITERALLY revealed the game alongside the reveal of the series x and nothing else. What else was that supposed to mean?
Oh, and the final game clearly shows the reveal trailer was 100% a fake CG trailer too. You can even see the bones in her nose and so much more detail in the face, nothing in the final game comes anywhere close to it. And if you DO think it was real, that was supposed to be Unreal Engine 4 footage. So the game got downgraded going to UE5 years later???
Many of us already said this time last year that Phil and Xbox NEED to knock it out of the park with Starfield, or they will be in trouble. Fast forward after its release to Feb 2024 and the Xbox "business update" happened with many more games being ported right now. Will any Xbot acknowledge that this was said last summer? Not a hope.

I don’t get some reviewers. You hate long games. You hate short games. What do you want? And no games especially now a day are not worth $60 or $70.
Graphically the game is impressive, but the lack of gameplay, mechanics and the game being very short completely harms the game. Basically, it's like a Quantic Dream game with the exception that Quantic games have MUCH more content, which puts it above Hellblade 2 😅
I just beat the game and i think its amazing and better than the 1st in many ways. I used to think the xbox tax was a joke but im starting to believe its real because i know for a fact if this game was a ps5 exclusive it wouldn't be getting this much hate and would have a higher meta critic.
Watching steam numbers you can called hellblade 2 a Flop, it has way less players than GOT despite GOT is 4 years old and hellblade 2 is a new game and day one.

Having Hellblade 2, Avowed, Indiana Jones and many more games launch day on Gamepass is already a huge win for Xbox players. While not having anything 1st party in 2024 is a huge L for Playstation owners, myself included. You don't seem to realize how bad your comment sounds.

I am so happy to say that I have an xbox, switch, ps5, PC among other classic consoles and majority of my library is and always has been 3rd party titles over exlsuvies. I am a gamer I game. Gladly I don't get a console just to play exclusives alone. Also call me crazy but sure free games on gamepass, but I like to own my stuff preferribly

As Expected. Its no Spiderman, God of War, Last of Us or Uncharted. Of course its not what the wanted. I'm sure that its a decent game like the first one. And maybe I buy it after it came for the Ps5. But of course its not selling the Xbox or the Gamepass or whatever in a good amount.

Honest opinion no shilling. Im loving it. Especially because i knew what to expect. I just beat stellar blade, an action phenom, while lite on story. Hellbade is a bit the opposite. But i definitely would not minimize the combat. The scene in the cave following the light, with headphones on in the dark is peak gaming. When the first hellblade was exclusive media loved it, now the sequel is here allowing you to step into that workd again and media is doing exactly what we all knew they would. This is what closes studios
I used to do this all the time, alternate between fast and slow and medium paced games. One day I might play something like doom, the next a point and click adventure or stealth game.

For me, like the Xbox 360 gears of war needs to save the day. Hellblade is good but not god of war good. To give players hope i hope xbox reveals gears 6 soon.
