"He's blocking in a stationary position and not moving."
I don't think in any way shape or form you could succeed in blocking a 20 foot tall ape with a sword.
You might be able to not block but like deflect or move where the blade goes. But even that isn't very likely
@@dname9394 I don't know, changing the movement of a 15 foot tall sword wielded by a 20 foot tall ape looks imposible as well
@Genocide is fun he is not immune to pain .... i think
when he take a hit or die he let out a cry of pain
He can only push the blade out of the way if irl, he can't directly clash with it, he can only divert the force away, and even that is not a easy task at all
No, you're just not trying hard enough
I was hoping they'd talk about mikiri counter cause I'd love to know an expert's opinion on the action of stepping on a sword in order to deflect or stop the attack
You wouldn't do it the way Sekiro does it,but it's very much possible. You usually hit the blade to the ground and also out of line with you and then step on it. I do Italian Longsword training so Japanese swordsmanship might also do it.
@@MoldyOog
longswords are quite a bit heavier, and katanas are thin and rigid

4:08 I’ve beaten sekiro 9 times and I never knew you could do a lightning reversal with the mist raven tool
its very useful when fighting inner genichiro, thats how i learned about it
sakura dance too
Maybe you've beaten it before 1.04
It's also good for no damage fights cause you dont take damage reversing lightning with mist raven
Mist Raven and Sakura dance can reverse lightning without you taking chip damage against Tomoe Geni and spear saint Ishin. But if the boss reverses your lightning reversal, you might be screwed because both mist and dance have a slightly longer "hang time", i.e. Wolf stays airborne and won't touch the ground fast enough for a 2nd reversal.

Yep, no feudal system anymore. Although there are some people whose their family tree can be traced back to big houses. Some are just buisnessmen now, others carry their tradition and teach martial arts to modern athletes.
It’s probably there for the click bait, if you look at their name cards in the video they are listed as action actor, martial artist, kendo, kenjutsu teacher. That’s off the top of my head from what I saw.

This is so cool!! I love how simply they explained everything. I’m really interested in learning more about the art of Japanese sword fighting now....
You're learning some, but the point of learning a sword discipline is to take the basics of any given art and have your own spin on it. Like I use European half swording techniques even when I practice with my katana, because it is essentially a messer with a longer handle and no quillians.
@@MoldyOog True! Like Bruce Lee once said: "Absorb what is useful, reject what is useless, add what is essentially your own."
"Shinobi would use a ninjato" *shows a sword that doesn't have any historical evidence of existing before the 1960s*
It's probably based on things he's heard from masters while training, or from people who pass down that information through word of mouth. Remember, having no evidence doesn't necessarily mean it's not true. And historical archives aren't going to accept hearsay, so if it was definitely real but only described through word of mouth, it wouldn't be considered evident of existence.
Ikr, I kinda cringed when he said that
in their scroll theres no mention of ninjato because since shinobi's main job is to spy and gather info they dont engage in fights and carrying weapons would make them suspicious.
Correct me if i'm wrong but wasn't the small sword they used called a Wakizashi?
@@nyr3n914 Yeah. The Kodachi is a little longer I think.
disclaimer: there's actually no evidence that the ninjato ever existed historically. It was a later invention primarily from the entertainment industry. Even if you think about it logically the ninjato makes no sense, why would a ninja, who relies on infiltrating places without anyone suspecting him, wear a uniform or carry a sword that could uniquely identify them as a ninja, especially when swords were so heavily restricted during large portions of Japanese history, and having one would draw unwanted attention to them. Ninja didn't really operate by skulking about in shadows and doing parkour, they dressed like the people in the place they were infiltrating, gained entry without drawing attention to themselves, and did what they needed to do, which was mostly gathering information. They were the spies of their time, and operated as such. This isn't to say that the skulking and assassinations never happened, because they did, but that was a very small part of what ninja did, and when they needed to assassinate someone, dressing like a commoner and hiding a dagger was often a much more effective option.
They would wear the shinobi foku (or "uniform") when there was no excuse for them to be somewhere they're not supposed to so better not to be seen at all than wear a disguise and be questioned why you're here
Yea when I saw him with a katana I kind of questioned it but then I realized that I didn't know if the "typical ninja straight blade" was even used.
If I remember right Ninjato as a style exists in terms of Japanese infiltration but never was a specific group of individuals.
I'd assume the outfit would be more of a ritualistic clothing used for training/out of mission stuff, no?
@@Corrupted Im not sure that's the case. As far as I've heard there are two possible explanations why we thought they even had a black uniform. First is because the illustrations of the Edo period in which it was common for people to wear masks. As it was to expensive to get a fancy mask, people usually bought simple black robes with black masks and media today use that as a reference for a ninja. Second is that they used black robes for a theatrical purpose. Moving props from the background "without being seen" so that they don't disturb the play. The idea like the green screen today if you will. Even without those two reasons I don't see why they would need a uniform because they were like hired commandos in a sense. I might be wrong though. If anyone has any information that is more accurate I'd like to know.
The second that guy pull out that ninjato, he lost all credibility. Ninjato is a Hollywood thing
To be fair he's a martial artist not a historian but it's still annoying.
I wish they would stick to the technique side of things more, because I love hearing about how one cut or attack is actually realistic (or not). Not to mention they obviously aren't historians, so most of the history they talk about is basically at the level you would learn from pop culture. That said, I feel like I have to point out there is no historical instances of a "Ninjato" sword, sure there where straight swords and short swords like the wakizashi, but the whole idea of a Ninja/Shinobi only sword is 100% a modern myth. That's not to say Shinobi may not have had their own particular type of weapons they may have carried, but that our modern idea of a Ninjato was not one of them, and there are 0 surviving sword that would fit that description, as most that do are only a hundred years old or so, nothing correct to the period in which Ninja/Shinobi were active.

The people they got are not really great experts sadly. One talks about using a ninjato which is a Hollywood invention. Though points for saying kodachi. And then both talk about blade locking or as it's also called the bind as a contest of strength which that is the farthest from the truth. Blade locking is a contest of who can control their opponents force and create a opening first.

I think people wanted the experts react to Sekiro because of the posture mechanic (deflections rather than direct blocking to break through an opponents guard). Additionally, Wolf received the sword from Kuro and is an Ashina Katana, however the Interior Ministry shinobi do wield "Ninjato", so it was a narrative choice.

pretty sure in sekiro most blocking is actually deflection, so it wouldn't deteriorate the sword so much
Although in a life or death situation what's important is actually parrying the attack. Making sure that it's the flat you're blocking with is a tertiary concern at that point.
@@alephkasai9384 Sure, but the game is an ultra power fantasy of the most skilled shinobi - The game has both blocking and deflecting as mechanics, deflecting being way more precise and damaging your opponents posture instead of your own, I think it's fair to assume Wolf is technically so good that he would be able to have the mental fortitude to always deflect instead of block - which would be the ideal perfect scenario if you wouldn't fear death, which makes sense, him being immortal in the story

Of course ninjato is a historical weapon!!! Dude what do you know!!?? Haven't you informed yourself? The shorter the weapon the better. They created an advantage against the samurai also by fitting it with a rectangular crossguard so when the samurai were in the state of "what the fuck does that guy have on his sword" they exploited that opening and hit them with throwing stars. They did exist, just not in those black costumes.
@@juanhoffmann4096 why not, this modern view of ninjas that people have and especially weebs first came about from kabuki theater, this concept of a black garbed, mystical assassin spy. Calling them samurais is kind of a stretch. It's like calling someone who reads comics an comic book analyst.
Also some of the stuff they said isn't true with view on history. Like the Ninjato - there's just no proof it got actually used in the old days. They did use swords (and a lot of other weapons) but the closest to a ninjato would probably be a captured Katana.
These guys seem more like japanese nerds than actual "samurai" they should've gotten real folks from Japan that're still passing down their samurai heritage, style, etc.
Sorry but the word samurai actually refers to a way of life rather than a soldier caste. Although the soldier or protector that served a master in feudal Japan were called samurai. A samurai are actually those who live by a certain code of honor. And just like the knight there are those who still wish to live by those codes
@@sirsukena6914 It was a way of life of a soldier. And of course they focused on a certain code just like any other medieval soldier because they had their own ruler. If they didn't follow that code then they wouldn't only lose their honor as a soldier but lose the rulers respect as well. Which makes them a rogue and an outcast. Soldiers like knights and Samurai weren't only brutes but we're also pretty noble to their rulers. A lot of rulers like Kings and Shogan's had their own military status as well and invested a lot in their military. Rulers weren't only very nobile but were also war lords. So it wasn't a way of life but a way to not be seen as a fucking goof or bad soldier by their crown boi. Basically, a ruler can smell a bullshit soldier.
