Stealing a Nation - The Plight of the Chagos Islands VS the United States (2004)

- Stealing a Nation is a 2004 Granada Television documentary about the British-American clandestine operation that saw the expulsion of the native Chagossian population of Diego Garcia and neighbouring islands. More than 2,000 people were exiled to Mauritius between 1967 and 1973, so that Diego Garcia could become a United States airbase (see depopulation of Chagossians from the Chagos Archipelago). The film contains a series of interviews with native Chagossians, who have been deprived of their right of return and forced to live in abject poverty. Stealing a Nation was written and directed by John Pilger, and produced and directed by Christopher Martin; reconstruction footage was directed by Sean Crotty.
I feel so angry at the UK and US governments for all the torment and atrocities they've committed and gotten away with! This is disgusting! Those poor people had to leave their home and livelihood in such an inhumane and unethical way! They are a community still suffering today! I just wish more people know about this and there is awareness! They deserve JUSTICE!! I'm ashamed of the UK, more needs to be done for the Chagossian people.

It happened for centuries and continued through Iraq, etc. Living in UK, we were never told that the empire was stolen. It was portrayed as an education for savages. The mentality continues, don't think otherwise.

Wow thanks for posting! I remember seeing this decades ago, it is John Pilger, the award winning journalist. He recently completed brilliant documentary and written report on 'The Coming War on China' , US aggression in the China seas.

@@OKA4LIVE You're right, they shouldn't. Because Britain should never have interrupted their way of life and destroyed their land to make way for a military base! These people are left without a home, with limited support from the government. It's now the responsibility of the UK Gov to compensate for the 50 years of trauma inflicted on the Chagossians.
I wonder if there ever was support for those people from the supposed Royalty rulers in London? To my knowledge they were silent. For the USA we could not expect anything good from them. How can the world ever have any respect towards such systems?

And refreshingly honest in pulling up the disingenuous, self-styled "justice warrior" Pilger for his motives in taking up this particular cause (and trying to make it a race issue rather than the Anglo-American world domination one)
Do you honestly think if the people of the Chagros Islands were white with British heritage, speaking English and having family in Britain, they would have been treated like this? It’s not that the politicians said „oh they are not white, we hate them“ but they have no political capital because they are not white British people, so the government knew no one would care and they could do treat the Chagrosians as less than human because they would face no repercussions for it.
Race is not a one dimensional issue. Its also about power and influence.

This Island was needed for the objectives of the American military complex and if *any* racial group had been in the way they would have been dealt with unforgivingly and if necessary in a far more brutal way, and the media would have been silent on it as the media is universally controlled by these government agencies.
