Two Antique Jacob's Ladders

- The Jacob's Ladder or Tumbling Blocks toy apparently dates back several centuries. A series of wooden or sometimes cardboard blocks have different pictures on the front and back. The blocks are held together with ribbons which allow the picture to change from one image to another when you tilt the top block. The toy gives the illusion that all the blocks are tumbling downwards.
The first toy is of a traditional design. he second one, called The American Beauty Show, also contains two sets of paper fans that alternately open, depending which way you tilt the toy. - Věda a technologie
That's some serious shit. When Tim says it's his favorite toy, you pay attention.
I know he's a little elderly but Time? Isn't that a little harsh?
The Great Gyrofluff Omg this has to be the greatest typo in the history of typos. I almost don't want to edit it. I totally meant Tim. I swear lmao.
He has said that about 40 times now.
Tim is love, Tim is life,
for those whom go agains't our great Collector Tim will be annihilated with content.

Thank you for revealing these 2 evolved versions of this fabulous toy. I really had an A-HA moment
I wish Tim was my eccentric uncle
He is, he's everyone's eccentric uncle
Oh, I know those five participants and they are: Miss Lead, Miss Understand, Miss Behave, Miss Represent and Miss Fortune.
The latter won that contest , if you want to know.
The MISSing portions are Miss Conduct, Miss Information and Miss Guided (she pulled out after realising she wasnt attractive enough to win).
I've been fascinated by the Jacob's ladder since i was 6 years old and I've made many versions of it throughout the years. I've found a tiny version (only 4 blocks) of it lately and naturally I needed to get hold of it and combine a few sets of them to create a much longer one. Has anyone ever made a Jacob's ladder out of acrylic? I think it'll be rather cool looking.
I have a similar toy, but instead of cards, each section is a wooden block, so that when it's flipped over and the blocks fall on each other, they make a clacking sound. It's called a Pata-Pata (for the sound it makes), and if my memory serves me right, I got it at the Japanese sector at Disney World's Epcot.
Had one too in London in the 1970s
The repair work for pieces so old is highly impressive
it would be cool if there was a jacob's ladder where there was a cop on one side and a bank robber on the other.
Dem beauties, 10/10 wb
Every toy is his favorite toy!
Wow I never knew what a Jacob's ladder was until now. Lovely pieces of antiquity.

On yt the subject makes you click and the host makes you stay. Tim is quite a host.
I dont know either.. He is just stupendously cozy. Maybe its the simplicity and positive nature that just provides some kind of breather from the bombastic things one typically watches on youtube
Hey, Tim and I have the same favorite toy. Neat.
am I the only one who can fall asleep to the sound of his voice like it was nyquil?
Jacob’s ladders still amazes me as much as when I was a child.
boumbh have you still not realized how it works lol.
chrismechanic B I made some when I was a child, I know the principles, but I still fail to understand it as a whole. Maybe I’m just not willing to comprehend.
very cool indeed!!!
Very cool
Very curious indeed
aww how cool
Anyone who does not love Uncle Tim is simply mad!
India Kilo who's uncle tim?
jord4n369 the man in the video :-)
Still don't know how it works
There is one thing attached to something with something, and then there is the opposite thing, that becomes something else when the whole thing moves...yes, I think that's all. Heh.
Arra Neon the ribbons are holding it in one direction and when you turn it the other piece slides across the ribbon and since one end is now not being held up it falls causing it to knock the other one down and make an elegant chain reaction
Arra Neon it's magic
Just look it up on wikipedia, it's hard to explain with just words, you need visual aides to explain it clearly.
JAcob's ladder is mine favorite too.
Did anybody else expect the other type of Jacobs ladder and discovered these for the first time instead?....
I was waiting for someone to point it out
This is fucking magic to me.
For kids is when i grow up i wanna be an astronaut !
For me is: when i'm gonna grow old i wanna be like this guy
Seriously now, i'm so passionate about these things i think of making my own shop.
Did you?
Hiroyuki Kama yeah I would really like to know
yeah did you?
Tim,
Thanks so much for your wonderful channel. I'm a visual artist and am working on a "book arts" piece. The format of the "International Beauty Show" that you featured is intriguing and would be perfect for what I'm trying to design. Do you have any idea as to how it was made? If not, can you refer me to any sources that might be of help?
Thanks again and cheers,
Marie
Hello! I know this is an old post but I just found it during a search for how to make jacob's ladders. I'm working on a photo project and would like to make a jacob's ladder out of them, but instructions I've found have shown three ribbons, with one in the middle over where the photo would be. Since you've repaired this and presumably know how it goes together, would you be able to give me some tips on how to keep the ribbons just on the sides?
Part two: what I would really love to do is make it in two directions- where you could make them drop like this vertically but also horizontally. Is that something you think would be possible or is that a pipe dream because of the mechanics of the thing?
Sorry for the long comment, but your passion and expertise are inspiring! Thank you for showing such beautiful examples of these very cool toys.
so cool just wonder how they work .
Two pairs of strings (on one side there's only one string) holding up each card on both side, and as you flip the first one it will cause the next one to flip and propagate down the line.

I've actually always wanted to know what his favorite toy was
I wish Tim would show us the restoration
RIP Morgan

Those are like magic lol
I think I can try recreate one
what is this ancient alien voodoo technology?!
very interesting. so that's how the people back then survived without internet
Where does he get those wonderful toys???
''I was asked by someone to repair this'' ''So i did, and so i kept it''
heh.
could you make the endless London into a giant Jacobs ladder??
His favorite movie must be Toy Story
is the two officer version only using TWO ribbons instead of the normal three? any required changes in how you attach the outer two ribbons? also, how are the ribbons attached to the blocks on that long clacking one from Germany?
where can you get one of those
How do you make this type of ladder without having ribbon down the middle?
How does that work
Jacob makes a nice ladder, but I wouldn’t climb them.
"WATER FROM THE NILE"
hm... how does it work?
Now I find out what these things are actually called. I have one from Mexico.
I have a Jacobs ladder with Chinese drawings and writing and different colored papers in between. It's very very old. I have been trying to do d out where I can get it looked out maybe how much it's worth. Do you have any suggestions?
I went to selly manor with my school and we got for free and I bought one (Modern)
What does Tim's favourite toy really look like? :D
Are you sure -The third picture from the top at 1:13- is of -someone dressed up for Mardi Gras?- It kinda looks like a geisha or a meiko (a geisha in training.)
Xaxton Revolution it's from 1850s America

I thought Jacobs Ladders were electrical things?
why Indian solder is shorter than the British one?
For kids Toys > smartphone/tablets...
My name is Jacob
Aren’t jacobs ladders in animal crossing
How the hell...
How does this relate to Jacobs ladder can someone tell me ? Is it based off the motion or ? & I'm sure we are talking about the physics jacobs ladder not the biblical Jacob's Ladder in the book of Genesis. If it's based of the physic Jacob ladder motion it should be going up not down... Really confused...
Imagine how many ladies he got
that's me name
B)
1:20 i think i like the american flag sude more
that second one, it looks like the flags have 50 stars, but in the 1850s, America didnt have 50 states.
If you look closer the flags on the cover have about 9 stars each and the ones that fan out have over 60 stars. So clearly neither were meant to be an actual accurate representation of the current flag.
he said it was made in the 1850s thoguh
Minotaur Gaming The current flag when the ladder was made which would have had 30-33 stars.
i know that...
Oh dear... pinup soldiers
WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SORCERY!?
I'll explain it to you if delete this comment and replace it with one that doesn't have swearing in it.
Be dat first comment B)
