As you may already know, Tim keeps his toys in suitcases. There are around 200 suitcases in his flat, and they are all labelled according to the date he acquired the contents. So in this video, Tim explores the contents of one of his suitcases that contains toys that he acquired in 1986. Some of the toys might be older than 1986, but that is the year Tim acquired them. So, a little trip back in time...
'For People Who Don't Know Which Way To Turn' - this strange mechanical device consists of a wooden base which has two slots cut into it at right angles. As you turn the metal handle, this causes two metal bars to move to and fro in the two slots in such a way that although they both pass through the central point, they never quite touch. Neat!
A strange, battery powered creature from space - hit the on switch, and the little alien zooms around the table, opening and closing its mouth. Is it hungry?
A plush toy that is supposed to be a bat. Not common. It makes bat sounds!
A 10 wheel articulated toy, a bit like a lunar rover. It is good on rough terrain.
Tim then shows a few of the greeting cards he received in 1986, cards that he liked so much that he added them to his collection. The first one is a clown, that plays Happy Birthday and little lights flash when you open the card. Given that the card is nearly 40 years old, Tim was pleasantly surprised to discover that it still works, the battery still has power! Also a card that you can wear, and a multi purpose card, that says 'HAPPY' and you can then tick 'birthday' or 'Christmas' or one of the many choices available!
A large match box that turns out to be a puzzle. Once you solve the puzzle - get the ball bearing to settle in the right position - only then can you open the match box!
Finally, another mechanical device. You turn the handle and the mechanism reverses the direction of turn without the use of any gears or pulleys. Tim studied mechanical engineering at university, so he always likes item like this. This particular one he calls ingenious!
