With "Black Swan," BTS divulge their most harrowing shadow yet, one that any person who lives for making art faces: losing the passion for creating.
"A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful." Martha Graham. This quote is at the root of the sentiments inlaid in "Black Swan." Much like a dancer feels purposeless when they can no longer express themselves through dance, BTS contends that the day that music no longer fills them with the same passionate fire as before, or even if there came a day when they stopped creating music - what they feel is their life's purpose - it would feel like death.
RM sings, "If this can no longer resonate / No longer make my heart vibrate / Then this may be how I die my first death."
Once again, BTS affirm that despite their countless record-breaking accolades, the wealth they've amassed, and their ever-increasing fame, they are artists. What means most to them is the art - music, visuals, dances - that they create.
    Have a nice day

Yes. I am a 50-yr-old Army. I lost my husband to cancer a year ago and BTS has been the best therapy and mental health support for me. My husband and I both love music and sang together through junior high and high school. I feel like BTS has so much amazing music and diversity of content that I can always find what I need in the moment. Watching people that are new to BTS go through the same rabbit hole I’ve been down has become a real means of entertainment and happiness. Thank you for sharing your experience.

The BTS story is the real David & Goliath story in the Korean Music Industry. It is an underdog story that is not uncommon for small labels outside the big 3 in SK's massive Kpop Industry. However, Bangtan Sonyeondan is the only group that succeeded beyond any one's expectations even those of BTS themselves. The magic lies in how these 7 scrappy and fierce young men who 10 years ago most of them were still in their teens defied the odds, believed in themselves, trusted their mentor & boss Bang PD, shook off all the arrows pointed their way, weathered every mistreatment, every calculated sabotage by the powerful music companies that monopolized Kpop, how they rose above all the negative publicity from a controlled media and withstood a collective targeted multiple social media attack by other fandoms. Truly disheartening. Yet these 7 kids circumvented that prejudiced judgmental kpop system and broke that proverbial glass ceiling over and over again thru sheer grit, discipline and an indefatigable work ethic.
BTS created and developed their own strategy to reach their fans because they were shunned by established TV variety shows. So they started personal blogs, Vlives, their own variety show Run BTS and other media content. They realized early on how Army was also affected by their hardships and vowed that they would always do their best and work extremely hard so that their fans would not be embarassed to be called BTS A.R.M.Y They saw Army as their true friends who like them experienced all the horrible stuff that they experienced. They recognized that Army protected them and when Army grew in numbers globally, they saw Army's massive power and reach. To this day, BTS still asks "Why them?" They know that there are other kpop groups who are hardworking and talented too. What is it that gained them such a loyal following of people from toddlers to the elderly from nearly every country on this planet?
That is the true magic of these courageous, intelligent, extremely talented, honest and humble young men. Those big 3 companies have tried to replicate it. They will never succeed because there is no formula. There will only be one Bangtan Sonyeondan.
Let the other kpop groups make their own unique path to success. Only then will they be able to see if they have what it takes to write their own history.

The song builds around a quote by Martha Graham: “A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful.” This was a time when they were feeling somewhat burned out and wondering what would happen if they lost their passion for music. But this song ends with renewed hope. In the last few verses, J-Hope sings about the black swan deciding that despair was not going to define its last days and it ends with Suga singing about the swan getting up to dance once more. This reflects BTS' own inner thoughts about their art. They have been open with Army many times in the past about their fears and struggles but have always recovered to decide to push on and aim higher. Their transparency and honesty about their feelings with Army is part of what has fueled this intense and close relationship between BTS as artists and Army. The relationship has gone beyond just being fans; Army actually see them as family - to be with no matter what happens and to defend and protect each other.

I suppose being a BTS fan makes me a 65 year old, male screaming teenage girl... or not. What a wonderful set of new reactions. 'Mic Drop' is hip-hop, not k-pop, and Black Swan has an almost classical feel to it, again having nothing to do with k-pop. Continue learning. You'll discover this group of musical artists cuts a such a wide swathe through so many musical genres that pigeonholing them as a 'pop' group is, for all intents and purposes, an admission to knowing next to nothing about them.

K-Pop is a Multi-Billion dollar Industry not a Genre so our Tannies are not even considered as K-Pop Artists in their own country of South Korean (As they have been told many times by other agencies) as they have broken out of the mold by doing all genres of music and paved their own way as well as Paved the way for the next generations of K-Pop Artists (Yes they have multiple generations we are currently in the 4th Gen) to breakout into the West.

Black Swan MV was my introduction to BTS and I fell in love with them. Now, I have gone way down the rabbit hole and can't seem to ever get enough of all 7 of them, as a group and individually too. FYI, right now their ages are 25 through 30, but at the time this came out in 2020 they would have been 23 through 28. Jungkook is the youngest and his first official solo single is coming out on July 14th. It is called SEVEN. He said in a live stream yesterday that there is an MV to follow and he is still working on his album. ARMY is so excited!
Black Swan is about losing your passion for your art (singing, dance, etc.) and that would be considered the first death, which is said to be harder than the real death (I think because you are still alive but you feel dead inside having lost your passion). I believe that BTS were going through some trying times when this song came out. Anyway, glad you enjoyed the song. Their Live performances of this are incredible. I especially love the one they did at their Permission to Dance concerts in late 2021 and April 2022. It's so, so beautiful!
Also, one correction to something you said - they DO have in-house choreographers and also sometimes use outside choreographers. J-Hope is the groups Dance Leader, so he learns the choreography first and then guides the others to bring their performances to cohesive and beautiful performances. They also change the choreographies up themselves to make it work better for them as a group. Jimin is also a Main Dancer but his style and his training is in Modern Dance, so he is more fluid, while J-Hope is more street dance (and I think that man has no bones!!). ALL of them can dance though. Jungkook is a Lead Dancer, and V joined the 3J team in 2018 (3J = J-Hope, Jimin and Jungkook who sometimes do their own subunit dances).
When you have time, I do highly recommend you watch an Introductory video about BTS despite it's length. That way you can learn about each of their unique and amazing talents that make them the best male group in the world!!

Jimin is a contemporary dancer and is the one doing the incredible solo dances in the MV as the lead dancer. Jhope is the main dancer because he’s older and the one who learns the choreo and then teaches the others, but both he and Jimin add things to the choreos as the dancers they are. They practiced 14-16 hrs a day … 8 of those on choreo alone.
Their ages as of today range from 25-30. The oldest is Jin who turned 30 on Dec 4th of last year; Suga (aka Agust D -real name Yoongi) is also 30 (3/9/1993); then comes Jhope (Hoseok aka Hobi) who is 29 (2/18/1994); RM (Namjoon) is 28, will turn 29 on 9/12; Jimin is 27 and will turn 28 on 10/13; V (Taehyung) is also 27 and will be 28 on 12/30; lastly is JK (Jungkook) who is 25 and will turn 26 on 9/1. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

What's cool about BTS is that people who like them cover not only a wide age range but also wide musical tastes. I grew up on "classic" FM rock, but I have playlists that include various genres (new wave, disco, funk, alternative, swing). We all have our preferences, but as Suga said, "You’ll like BTS music if you listen without prejudice." The string instrument in the song is a gayageum, a type of Asian zither. I don't know much about music production, but it seems that they carried the vibrato sound of the instrument through to the vocal effects to emphasize the feeling of being unsettled. Looking forward to you getting into the rap and vocal line songs and the solo work.

I just wanted to add a couple of observations that you may not notice on first watch through the MV. Firstly, the song is from their Map of the Soul album series where they explore Jungian concepts of the Persona, Shadow and Ego. The shadow self is the subconscious hidden persona you have that holds your fears. To become a fully rounded person you need to confront your fears and accept they are part of you to form your full ego persona. In this song that is what they are doing. Their fear of losing passion for making music might have held them back but they confront that fear, accept it and can move on. In the video they are wearing white when they are being viewed from the audience and fan perspective, and they are presenting their persona to us, which is their stage persona. When they are wearing black they are showing us their fears from behind the scenes, from the back of the stage. Suga at one point says he looks inside himself and sees himself, he reaches out and touches the shadow that he was fearing and accepts it is just part of himself. At the very end Jungkook watches his shadow diminish and disappear - he has see his shadow, accepted it and can then move on. It is a very clever video.

Doolset Bangtan Lyrics is a brilliant resource to dig deeper into the meanings of BTS songs. If you have time, please use it. It is very helpful and explains a bit about Korean proverbs, idioms, metaphors, societal issues and historical / cultural context.
The symbolisms in this video - (especially the shadow at the beginning and disappearing in the end) will be explained in Doolset Bangtan. It may take a few more viewings to understand what this video is trying to say.
Good luck with your BTS journey.

The Shadow is part of Jungian Psychology along with Persona and Ego it's the part of the mind where we hide our darkest thoughts, feelings, our doubts, fears and the things we don't want others to know about. In this case it represents that inner fear of losing one's passion for one's art eg Song writing, composing, producing, singing, rapping, dancing, performing and/or losing the ability to do what they love. When the Shadow at the end shrinks down to nothing it's represents over coming those fears of losing one's passion for one's art. Great to see Father and son exploring more together.

Jhope has the title of dance leader since he learns choreos the fastest. In Black Swan it's actually Jimin that would have fine tuned everyone as he is the only one with a background in contemporary dance. He is the one you can see doing the solo parts in the MV.

hello! It would be interesting for you to watch the video, A Guide to BTS Members: The Bangtan 7, which focuses on each one individually and will give you an idea of who exactly they are, and the time of work and talent of these guys, which June 13th made 10 years since they debuted, the group is composed of 3 rappers and 4 vocal line and yes they have a lot of dance performances, and you will see that initially they were cut from the programs because they belonged to a small company, so they created content on youtube to get closer to the fans what makes them stand out, because they really show themselves as they are, it's worth a look, sorry for the insistence

The lyrics of their songs, along their other attributes made me a BTS fan @ 65yo🥰. I suggest when u watch their videos, turn on the captions (most of w/c have English translations). The lyrics are mostly the reflection of their emotions, experiences, pains, happiness, challenges & hopes that they felt in their music journey & I believe a lot of these resonated w/ their fans, especially the ARMYs. The instrument at the beginning of Black Swan is an acoustic *low-fi( guitar, but it is played, and perhaps the music is written, to emulate a traditional Korean instrument called a gagaeum - I found this YT of BS being played n one of those - I find it very haunting.czcams.com/video/ymK2CtYGxxI/video.html
As for our boys' choreography, they do contribute to it, but they have specialist choreographers and also work with independent companies. I think you have probably heard that Hobi is the dance leader, learns the choreography first (in minutes) and then is responsible for training the rest of them and ensuring the precision. I've seen many dramas with dance leaders who are nasty egotists who berate and belittle dancers, and I think in real life there can be a lot of that - but, given the level of precision BTS have .... there's none of that. There's correction, but no criticism, and JHope is very patient indeed. I saw him dropping in on some young trainees who were learning the dance for fake love: they were, of course, starstruck. It seems if you visit dancers you always bring snacks! Anyway he asked them to do a run through for him and he watched in silence - but his gaze changes - super serious, intensely focussed, but not mean. When they finished, first of all he praised them, gave one or two corrections and pointed out one who had got the spirit particularly well, and then he thanked them for dancing for him. That's how I think feedback should be given.
As to the difference between this song and Dynamite - whoah! chalk and cheese! All the English songs were produced during lockdown for one reason only - to be light and cheerful and to cheer up ARMY around the world. BTS themselves were absolutely gutted at the time, and I think they really needed to do something different from the world tour that they had to cancel. Anyway, while I never liked any of them at first, they did the job and now I do enjoy them.
In reality, you can't ever describe BTS' music as any one genre because they do so many different ones. The universal thread running through all their music though, is depth. Even with Permission to Dance, which is a pretty light song, they peopled the MV with all the professionals who had to keep working and supporting people during lockdown and were released from exhaustion, and included ASL in the choreo for deaf people - I heard some people say they had never before felt included in an MV. So, yeah. In addition, the normal BTS message is deep - even in a song which appears light and bubblegum (I hate 'em as a rule, because I recall so many mindless 70s songs), there is an underlying meaning. GoGo sounds like bubblegum pop - all about I'll spend it while I have it and have fun, you only live once - but it's actually a commentary on the millions of young people in Korea who can never earn enough to be able to buy a house (even rent one independently), move out, even get married, never mind have a family of their own, so what is the point of saving their money? On the surface it's a bop, but if you listen properly and know a little, it's incredibly clever - and it's still a bop!
Please don't feel that you have to watch a "documentary" soon: you can go at your own pace, but when you are ready, it is well worth the time involved. The most up to date is Taylor Mari's Bangtan 7- up to date at May 2022, but, Lord! a LOT has happened since then! .... aaaand BTS are SUPPOSED to be on a "hiatus".
