40 year old happily married American mother ARMY here :) I’ve never been a “fan” of any musician/group before finding BTS a year or so ago. Loved music? Of course! Had artists I listened to more? Of course! But been a “fan”? Nope, just BTS for me. I had no interest in any of the boy groups of my youth, I didn’t even listen to that music. BTS just hits different and the more I learned about them, the further down the rabbit hole I fell! They are adorable and I have no doubt they have many admirers for that aspect but it’s their incredible talent, work ethic, lyrics, performances, and beautiful bond that has me hooked. It’s just such a good time to hang out with BTS :) My favorite part of BTS is their live performances, both singing and dancing. I really think their unique blend of vocals just comes together to make something so beautiful together.

Fellow Brit here, and another crusty male ARMY (65). I’ve been listening to lots of different music since the Beatles were still together and I don’t think any other artist has had quite the same impact on me as BTS.
I’m a visual artist by training and I work in the film industry. When I stumbled across the video for Blood, Sweat and Tears in 2017 it blew me away. You’ll see why when you get around to reacting to it. In fact, the entire Wings album (2016) that it comes from is a visual feast which has seven extraordinary short films as well as the official music videos. BTS weave stories, social and political commentary, art, literature, psychology, philosophy, Korean culture and their own lives into performances. I’ve not come across any other artists who do anything quite like it in such a consistent and engaging way. Their concerts and even their award show performances are astonishing.
And they do that while staying grounded, humble and genuine. They’ve lived their lives in public for over ten years and they’ve had some huge challenges to overcome.
You have a lot to catch up on and people have given you great suggestions. Apart from the group music, there’s solo songs and albums, behind the scenes, concert footage and dance videos, documentaries and their variety and vacation shows. Quite a lot of songs have explanation videos to unpack the deep lyrics and cultural references.

71 year old BTS Army here. If you are serious about exploring BTS, you really need to use the English CC for their songs! The BTS Army would appreciate it. BTS music is heavily based in their lyrics. Their meaningful lyrics have made them the number one group in the world. Their topics include social injustice, societal expectations, mental health issues, and self love among other topics. Their music hits different and some of the BTS Army says their music has literally saved them. The BTS Army has one of the biggest fanbases in the world for a reason.
There is a saying among Army. "BTS finds you when you need them the most".

After chatting with them on a discord server I created for fans to connect with one another, & meeting up with 1 lovely 77 year older lady for lunch (we lived 3 hours apart, her in the same town as my family), she, my 18 year old child, and myself all flew to LA for their ptd concert! It was all of our 1st time seeing them. It was so fun dancing with her to the music. She had tshirts made for herself to wear to the concert that had dope senior with the o in dope being a purple balloon . And yes BTS have saved many lives, mine included, several times since they found me in late 2018. They still are currently, helping me get through the death of my husband last year. About 6 months after I found them in 2018, my mom, sister & her husband & an auntie all died within a 4 month period. I wouldn't have made it without BTS. They also have taught me to be more kind & empathetic towards others, and are helping me to love & be compassionate to myself as well as actively trying to make the world a better place.

This is the song that made me an instant BTS fan. I’d never heard anything like it. It’s fantastic. A hybrid of rap, pop, trap. MV is killer, too. When released in November 2017, in 24 hours, it hit #1 on iTunes in 80 countries. This was the track that truly made them a global phenomenon. Lyrics are great. Telling their haters to eff off, basically.

Yes, I'm older than you & I have a 95 year old BTS Army pen pal. I flew my family cross country to see them in concert in LA. and I can tell you first-hand there were plenty of men there and people of all ages, races & nationalities. I've been a huge fan of BTS' since around 2016. Despite having the largest global fan base in the world, many people still don't know them because they're Korean so don't get a lot of Western radio play. And a lot of people don't give them a shot thinking they're a typical "boy band" or they sing mainly in Korean so "I won't like it" or they hear one song and assume that's the type of music BTS always does. As others have probably said, if you give them a shot, you'll never be sorry. They have a huge discography of over 300 songs across many genres - rap, hip hop, R&B, pop, latin pop, EDM, ballads, etc. so most folks find something they like or often find stuff they didn't think they'd like but do. But their popularity comes from so much more than just their music - their underdog story, their sweet & funny brotherhood having been bandmates for 10 years, their messages about self-love and social issues, their philanthropy, their humility, their insanely chaotic sense of humor when together, their lyricism, their incredible talent & performance skills, etc. They've almost organically built the largest, most diverse (race, age, nationality, etc.), most passionate fan base in music history. That sounds crazy for a group so many people have still never heard of but it's true. If you keep exploring, I hope you enjoy the ride!

I’m 54 and “MIC Drop” was my intro to BTS five years ago - I came from a musical fan background of 80s BritPop/gothrock (Duran Duran; Joy Division; The Cure, INXS, etc) to 90s alt-rock/grunge rock (Nirvana, STP) and this song, the rapping, dancing - BLEW MY MIND because I had never seen/heard such a mixture of everything like this before....I immediately went down the rabbit hole and have no regrets...I now have a BTS playlist of well over 130 songs and I simply cannot say that about any other group/artist I've ever enjoyed

I am a 69 yr. old registered Army {BTS fanbase} and i have been to 2 of their concerts in Sofi Stadium in Los Angeles and Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. I’m so glad you guys gave BTS a second chance. This version of Mic Drop is great and Steve Aioki does add a lot, the beat however is all BTS. The original version has a lot more Korean. Please do turn on the close caption so that you can better understand the song. Keep in mind as you explore BTS’ vast catalog that the boys sing about things that affect them at the age when the song was created. Furthermore BTS started off with a much more hip hop sound and as they matured from teens into young men they changed their look and sound. The band just celebrated their 10th anniversary so there is a lot of growth in these years as artists and as citizens of the world. Their lyrics are really deep despite their young age. Aside from their music they also have a ton of reality TV shows that really allow their fans to see their personalities. I am eagerly looking forward to more reactions from you. I love that you use reaction videos as a means to bond. It is wonderful to see. Continue and watch out, it’s a steep but fun rabbit hole.

I'm a 71 year old guy, Chicago. Your reaction popped up in my feed this morning but I went back and first watched your reaction to Dynamite.
Mic Drop was a perfect second video for you. It's charged to show you the wide variety that BTS have in their music. Most of their discography Is written and produced by group members. Dynamite was not only written for the COVID lockdown, but also written for the English-speaking/American market.
I truly enjoyed watching the look of wonder. Come over your faces. That's a fairly standard reaction to BTS.
All of the members are involved in writing and producing music. Some more than others. One of the points that they have made is that, for them, dance is the equivalent of instruments for other bands. While many of them actually play instruments, they are seldom featured in the music videos.
I hope you continue to enjoy your dive down the BTS rabbit hole. You might want to watch one of the many videos made by fans which introduce you to the members of BTS.

28 yr guy here, we all need to start from somewhere so don't worry about having the wrong ideas when you start to learn about something. The most amazing thing will be to see your own growth after a little while and maybe becoming the start of the growth of someone else. btw the song that made me go like ok dude these guys got something, the energy I felt was overwhelming ahah "Not today' is the song. and fun fact about that song is where RM (leader of BTS) found some inspiration. in the last movie of the lord of the rings Aragorn rallies his troops and says: "... a day may come when the courage of men fails, ... but it is not this day ... This day we fight ! by all that you hold dear on this good earth I bid you stand, men of the west!" and RM decided to start the song saying : All the underdogs in the the world, a day may come when we lose, but it is not today, today we fight!

I have found them to be the most humble talented and Goofy 7 guys in a group that I have ever listened to. As many are saying much of their lyricism has very deep meanings and often a lot of Korean cultural ties. Doolset is a good resource to learn more of the meaning for the songs and cultural references. Both Taylor Mari and XCeleste have excellent documentary videos on the boys. ENJOY BTS MORE is another reactor who makes videos with excellent eng subs if you can't find them elsewhere. My first song was dynamite… I couldn’t tell who was who and I. Asian American but they looked similar to each other.. it was so hard for me to distinguish each of them. Then I watched tiny desk the 3 songs.. they are sitting down and singing so I could get some of them.🤭 please watch tiny desk… it really helped me go Down the rabbit hole😋 my intention was not to go down there😉 but guess what… these guys deserve all the kudos and respect.. hardworking, humble and talented !! The original version has a more raw sound, and I like it a lot. You can find the dance practice video, they were preparing for an award show and the choreo contains also dance breaks. It's really worth the watch!

To get an overall picture of the band I recommend an introduction to BTS by Taylor Mari, both informative and fascinating.
For a medley of songs you should watch Festa Room Live 2021. It will give you a chance to hear the different genres they can perform in. Or the BTS Tiny Desk Concert.
If you decide to listen to more BTS then you are in for a rare treat. They are all great musicians and thoroughly decent people.

BTS cover so many genres. Even latin and jazz. The more you watch the more talented you realise they are. They came up bucking the system all the way. So they had to create their own reality show called Run BTS, to get exposure they were excluded from.. They are hilarious. Mic Drop is epic - the original is all in Korean. This (you may have heard or realised anyway) is a response to haters. From before they even debuted BTS were faced with incredible amounts of opposition. I'm not sure exactly why but it seems clear that much of it was orchestrated by the big three Kpop agencies, often using fans of other groups. Also the rappers, especially Suga and RM who had started out in the underground rap scene, got a lot of criticism for "betraying hop hop". This song is one of several clapping back at those critics who said they would never amount to anything
As vocalist(s?) try listening to BTS' cover of Coldplay's Fix You. Released with permission from Coldplay themselves during lockdown it was greeted with great acclaim, including an immediate tweet from the band themselves "just beautiful". This song, Mic Drop, has an impactful lyrics aimed at their haters, I don't know if they could follow it, but it has closed subtitles that can be activated while watching the MV, it's much better to understand its lyrics and have a complete experience, because BTS is famous precisely for having lyrics with important and very valid messages, many of them changed the lives of many people making it better, they are amazing artists and people! I met them just over a year ago, and I fell in love with these guys, especially their personalities and the love they have for art, music, fans, in short, their work. Anyway, what I want to recommend is Taylor Mari's video, the BTS guide where you can find out more about how they started, all the achievements they had and also a lot of important information about each of the members, their group and solo projects as well. As only 3 of their 300+ songs are fully in English, it’s always a good idea to view with subtitles. Also, when you have the time, it can be fun to do their music video and then a live performance of the same song. Most of us feel they are even better live 😊

Mic Drop was a serious clapback at the people who bullied them when they were industry underdogs.
They came from a nothing company in an industry ruled by the Big Three companies that controlled the media and dictated who could be successful. BTS were pushed around and humiliated for even attempting to try something different when they were literally nobodies.
They were only able to find an audience because of social media that that Big Three couldn't manipulate. Now that they have successfully used social media to spread their message, the entire kpop industry had to follow suit to keep up.

The BTS rabbit hole is a great place to fall into. They have recorded themselves doing damn near everything. They even have their own show called " Run BTS ". Watch as much of it as you can. They never disappoint. These 7 guys are impressive not only in the music industry BUT also as human beings. The more you find out about them the more you will want to know.

Thank you for giving BTS another try. For a live performance you might try the BTS Room Live from Festa 2021 (Festa is an annual celebration of their debut in June 2013). It is an upbeat medley of seven songs in just ynder 10 minutes. czcams.com/video/RRhjdYsNwAk/video.html I am thinking that some of BTS' harder songs would be more to your liking, but this video lets you see each of the members and hear their voices.

I'm going to link you the original MIC DROP. The video I'm linking is a dance practice with a dance break for an award show. No subtitles to this one. Fun Fact - RM (group leader, main rapper, songwriter, producer) said the inspiration for this song started with Barack Obama's AP final dinner where he did the MIC DROP at the end. And they changed some of the lyrics from Korean to English, for the international fans. He is the only member fluent in English so far, but many of the members are getting close now to being fluent.

BTS has a massive fan base and their fans range from children to grandparents, male and female, different ethnicities, sexuality’s. Watch their guide to the seven members by Taylor. I’m 45 my daughter is 23 my sister is 51 and I’ve seen Armies in their 70s. Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m sure I heard you say they do half in German and half in English? They are Korean but yes it takes a lot of skill to swap languages especially when your first language isn’t English.

Their lyrics, especially B-sides of their albums, are real deep and meaningful. Of course translations from Korean to English, precise meanings get lost many times but their lyrics penetrate into our hearts a lot.
