Today, a most unusual thing for me - a direct comparison between two cars! In this case it's two fabulous 2+2 GT cars from Aston Martin and Maserati - the DB9 and the GranSport. One is newer than the other, and deemed the better by many - but what can the Maserati respond with?

I’m a huge Maserati fan - a lot of people misunderstand or only watch reviews of ones completely “run” into the ground. If you can find a well maintained one, one with the proper modifications to the exhaust and the Formula Dynamics drive by wire….the image of this car would be completely changed. I’d say the majority of haters for both brands have never owned…or for that matter driven one. I think both cars are sexy. I still own my GranSport…and love it and I also wouldn’t shy away from the Aston either. The Maserati is a pure Italian classic. You buy a Maserati for the passion and the engine….the history….it’s a great Gran Tourer. If you can master the F1 Transmission…it’s awesome. Yes…all the components are super expensive…but I guarantee…for the price of the Maserati - no other car will put a smile on your face….especially for the price….have I spent 50% of the value of the car on repairs…yes, is that a smart move, not really….but…so worth it. Find a good one, see it in person…and you will get what I am saying.

Is the Gran Turismo in a different class? I've always thought that GranSport design just looked started looking 'old' as soon as I saw the Gran Turismo. Whereas the DB9 design is just timeless, and I'm not sure if I really even think the DB 10/11 actually look any better than the 9!

    • @Tom--Ace
      @Tom--Ace Před 4 měsíci +1

@@morgman43 The Gransport is MUCH prettier in person. It's not a shape that translates that well to photos and video. In person, it becomes evident how aggressive, low and small the car is compared to trucks like the Granturismo or DB9. It becomes very evident that it is a special car, and people do notice that and comment everywhere you go.
The Aston is beautiful, don't get me wrong, but it's not as cut and dry as you might think.
Both do stand out in different colours however - the Aston does NOT look good with bold colours and suits flat and simple colours well (like this video). The Maserati does not do simple and especially flat colours well (red just looks off on it), it stands out in metallic, interesting colours with shimmer to the paint, with blue with a tinge of green probably the best (the blue in this video is also pretty good).
It's horses for courses when it comes to these cars and colours. If you want a bright red sports car, you need a ferrari, metallic blue, gransport for you. Overcast and grey, the Aston is the one to stay :)

2 years ago we bought an XKR x150 convertible, after considering Maseratis and Astons in the same price bracket here in Spain… Just because “wifey” loves Jags. She was really in love with the X150. For sure I liked the car as well, but faaaar away from what I do love it now (we already had at that point an M3 convertible and an S8). The XKR is beautiful, it’s fast, it’s comfy, and if you look for action, it’s quite rewarding as well for being such a big GT convertible. The best part is that, until now, after 40.000km of leisure trips (including 2 Nürburgrings), the maintenance has been quite reasonable (around 1200€/year in the Jaguar dealer). It’s an OUTSTANDING machine, such that I don’t have even a clue what the h… we’re going to do at some point to find a replacement. For sure I miss it in this video as well.

Altho about 10 years ago my father was buying a car and it was between 911 997 cabrio and Jaguar XK cabrio… by now Jaguar would loose about 15-20k in value and Porsche gained atleast 10k (he got a great deal too i guess, but still..). He still owns it, and honestly he is a terrible owner😀, but nothing major broke for now..
I would also look at early FX 4.2, even cheaper and probably a better car in every regard... and still very beautiful imo🥰 not as beautiful as mentioned GT cars ofc👍

The Aston Martin is predictably very good looking. More classically "beautiful". However, the Maserati is more interesting looking- in the best way possible. I think it balances elegance with sportiness, old-school and modern, to make a unique and exotic, yet understated design. Giugiaro never really styled the prettiest or most classically beautiful cars, but he did design some of the best-looking, most unique, and appealing ones. And I think the GranSport deserves the prize here. It's more of an acquired taste which I think makes it cooool. Plus it's relatively rare and obscure which makes it even coooler. 😉

    1. Maserati: potential and actual concerns over the reliability of Maserati.
    2. Aston Martin: concerns over the ownership and running costs of Aston Martin.
One thinks that buying e.g. a Mercedes AMG would more more reliable and with lower / more sensible running costs.
If you want a "dream car" maybe just have to throw caution to the wind and jump in with both feet?
A DB9 seems like it will cost a lot over X years of ownership.

Forgot to answer your looks question. I give the DB9 the nod on looks, but to your point many Astons look so similar it is hard to tell them apart, which is handy when you buy an old less expensive model, but look the 007 end of things for the uninformed which is 98% of the populace :-) The Maserati looks exotic and great, but the roof line does it in if slightly to make room for adults in back as you mentioned. Cheers!

Driving a very low mileage sub 5000 miles 2010 with sports suspension the damping and steering response is superb and the car shrinks around you. Mid corner bumps and a change of steering angle mid corner do not upset the car and the grip is surprisingly good.

Yeah Maserati’s best years are long gone, mid 50’s to mid 70’s were their golden era.

@@BrainFuck10 absolutely. Some truly gorgeous cars from that era. I don't know the in depth history of the company but it is a shame how they've just continued to go down hill over the decades. I can't help but think of how much of a disappointment the Ghibli seemed to be. Lol

Aesthetics is a clear win for the Aston. The Maserati looks a bit like a salon from the back. The Aston melds elegance with sporty looks.

The Aston has to be the more beautiful by far…. It is the car that you would always turn back and take another look at when parking 🤩 …. The Maserati is the beautiful young Italian that turns your head but turns a bit broad around the hips as the years pass 😆

James Reece, and older colleague of mine from our Business School, with whom I did several projects, one with Harley Davidson, is probably a Masochist. In the 1990s, he got himself a Jaguar XJ and his wife a Lexus LS400, both leased. At the end of the lease, he dumped the Jag, but the wife Bought the Lexus, which she drove 120 miles a day just to go to her Univ. So did James learn his lesson? Nooooo! He then bought a new Quattroporte, and after the junkmobile spending more time in the shop than on the road, he invoked the Michigan LEMON LAWS and forced the dealer to take the lemon and give him another one (LOL)

I looked at a Vantage and a DB9. The Ford/Volvo parts bin Vantage of the early 2000's is to be avoided in my opinion. Strangely the dealer told me that the DB9 drives worse than the Vantage!

Except for GT3s, 911s are just not special enough. Love DB9s but would stretch the budget to either a much rarer Rapide S with the 8-speed or a much more modern Granturismo. Leased a 2018 Granturismo MC and loved it.

DB9 is clearly the way to go. The interior of the Maserati looks like a Fiat Panda covered in leather, the way the headliner is made it looks like its 25-30 years behind the Aston, the A and B pillars could be a little thicker to give a feeling of safety and beeing cocooned. The Maserati implies a feeling of a kit car for me while the Aston is a proper car made using mass-production modern day technologies. Got more of an engine and the way better gearbox. For the suspension I assume you can find an adaptive one even in the aftermarket.
Maserati only the Gran Coupe for me and even that looks dated. Answering the question from the beginning DBS>DB11>DB11>992>991>Vantage (any of them)>DB9>997.2>Vanquish 2>Anything Ferrari>Gran Coupe >a lot of sports cars, even a Z4 2.0 E86> Maserati Gran Sport

Given your commentary and proclivities, I would have predicted you would prefer the Maserati, due to its links to your old Quattroporte and the Fezzas. The Aston fits your need for broader content and a new marque. In terms of styling, the Aston is classically beautiful though in a boring color. The Maserati is Italian in its sportier look, color, and more compact size.

Both great cars. The Maserati sounds like a lot of fun and would probably be my choice. It's a shame that both cars cost £700 in road tax and do 16MPG, otherwise I would be looking to test drive both!
