- When you play the same character for 10 years, it’s tough to not get typecast for the rest of your career. Understandably, the cast of Friends has had their issues with this over the years, but perhaps none more than David Schwimmer, famous for his role as scientist-who-insisted-he-was-on-a-break Ross Geller.
Schwimmer popped up here and there since the beloved NBC sitcom ended, and his role on The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story received plenty of good reviews, but his career hasn't thrived as fans expected it would. Let’s take a closer look at why Hollywood won't cast David Schwimmer anymore.

Should really be, 'Why David Schwimmer still isn't interested in Hollywood'. There's a great interview where he talks about his initial intentions about going to Hollywood to raise enough money to fund his, and his friend's, theatre company by getting into television. He pushed for equal pay for all six of the Friends cast, when the female leads were going to be paid less. The guy's a bit of a hero, to be fair, and the exclusion of his Band of Brothers role is convenient for your moot point.

ok, so this video is about why hollywood wont cast him anymore, and yet the whole video is saying that he HAS been in a lot of stuff since Friends, but none of it got really popular. so hollywood was still casting him. and THEN, the video ends talking about him being on the popular OJ trial show. so this whole video basically had nothing at all to do with the title.
99% of these "Why Hollywood Won't Cast so-andso Anymore" videos are exactly like that. They were actually in a bunch of stuff, stuff didn't do so well, they got distracted by doing other things. The End.

@Jeffrey Geoff Jefferson The major reason people still remember him as Ross' is exactly because of his decision after Friends came to an end to hide away into the darkness. Whereas Jennifer was spreading her wings and making the most of it, with success, such as in Marley & Me and The Millers etc. David had a bigger interest to just not wanting the publicity and recognition for his works. Now I understand why the writers wrote David's character of Ross as this whiny person in Friends.

During the production of Friends and after David Schwimmer has constantly let us know his dissatisfaction with Ross’ character development and the ensuing recognition, fame and “celebrity” status that made him go back behind the camera instead of continuing to pursue acting. Literally disappearing from the surface.

Schwimmer was just awesome in Band of Brothers , when I first saw the credits I was thinking "how is that gonna work?" , but he was perfect , a real force to kick off that show,

He once said in an interview that, friends ruined his carrier. Sometimes it is really hard to shake off a role. Once you done that people will see you as that character. He is an outstanding actor. I have seen Feed the beast. His performance was on point.
I think he is more capable but he is really picky about the projects he chooses. And I think it is a good thing.
I hope something good will come for him.
@Eric Bateman It is somewhat interesting that the *case* of ruining someone's career only counts for him though. Matt LeBlanc has won his Golden Globe Awards for his role in Episodes etc. Let alone that he went off the radar purely because of his divorce in 2006, that Joey the spin-off was a failure and his daughter being seriously ill. Lisa Kudrow has also been able to enjoy great success in other movie and tv-show projects.
It really comes down to a matter of personality. It seems the creators were right, after mentioning that they wrote the actors' experiences and traits into the show, that David does seem to be this whiny person that is capable of playing the victim. Of course it is in David's own right to make the decision to stay away from the publicity, but you might as well just enjoy it while you can and making the most of it. It is somewhat conflicting also, that you want to be this A-list actor but simultaneously acting hard not to be one, by refusing to accept major roles and the level of recognition for your work that comes along with it. Just chill down basically. He is still a good guy though, but a complicated person definitely.

I think its cool, you don't see many actors who select their roles based on what they want to do much anymore, its mainly about the pay these days and less about the passion in acting, I respect David Schwimmer for sticking to things that interest him and only picking those projects

The more I’m into friends, the more I like his acting. I believe he is a skilled actor since he played Ross from when he was a heartbroken divorced man to when he became a successful professor. I think it’s his asset for him to be able to play two distinctive traits.

Sometimes, it's really hard to get rid of a character who was really very famous. That doesn't let the actor show others characters that it's probably characterize before.

I think these “Why Hollywood doesn’t like [actor/actress] anymore” videos are disrespectful, and also misleading. Not everyone in the acting industry wants to become an Oscar-winning household name. Some prefer Broadway, some prefer low-key films, and some prefer working behind the camera. It’s their careers, they can decide wherever they want to go with it. They don’t have to be shamed for saying away from the limelight. The entire cast earns $20 million a year just from reruns, and the show will likely continue to air for decades. They could decide to quit acting and never get out of bed if they wanted to.

Marley & Me, We're The Millers, Horrible Bosses, Cake etc. But he made the decision to go into hiding, because of his unhappiness with the level of publicity and recognition that came along with it. That is his decision, to play the victim and making sure that he isn't cast for a role that brings him more success than Friends. Matt even won his Golden Globe Award a couple of years ago for Episodes. Proving once more that it is possible. But David is a complicated person and this video proves it even more so. Always reminding yourself that Hollywood is a difficult place indeed.

I met him briefly years ago at Sundance. I worked in a celebrity gifting lounge and lots and lots of famous folks came through our doors. He was not only one of the nicest people that came through, but he was also the only one I ever saw that offered to pay for some of the swag that he was being given. I will never forget that. I worked at the gifting lounge for 10 years and never saw that again.
I got so sad knowing that they’re all growing old 😭

David Schwmmier also did a couple of episodes of the mini series, Band Of Brothers. He did an exceptional job in that roll playing an officer everyone hated. This wasn't like anything I've ever seen him do. Great performance!
Now i am gonna go and watch his old shows mentioned here. I really like the man.

he was on 'the people vs oj simpson' a while back lol. he was actually really good
Schwimmer was awesome as Ross. EVERYONE of the funniest scenes are because of "Ross"........"You ate my sandwich....MY SANDWICH"...."the doctor gave me a pill and I certainly don't care about my sandwich anymore"......."get off my sister....Chandler! I saw what you were doing!".....The leather pants episode was hilarious.......Ross is mad because Rachel said yes to Joey's supposed proposal of marriage......then Joey saying to Ross at the Central perk, "Hit me! Hit me! I know you want to I can see it in your eyes!".....Ross throws a punch; Joey ducks; and Ross hits the pole; and screams. Gunther loves it. Later in Central Perk, the 3 guys are there. Joey in trying to show Ross that you duck when someone throws a punch at you, says to Chandler, "Look!" and Joey throws a punch at Chandler. He ducks and the punch hits Ross AGAIN. Does it get any funnier than that?

This video forgot to mention the years David Schwimmer spent in Chicago at The Lookingglass Theatre. He was a constant presence there and mentored young actors there.
