- We’re loving our time at Cades Cove campground in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. The highlight of our first full day there... riding our Rad Power Bikes on the 11-mile Scenic Loop.
This series/playlist is part of our daily van travel vlog. Here’s a link to the entire playlist: • Episode 1: W. Kerr Sco...
Instead of the usual motorhome or 5th wheel retired life, we chose a van trekking lifestyle for our retirement years. It’s more adventurous and definitely a more nimble way of living life. During this pandemic we are trying to stay within 4 hours of our NC home, so a van trip across America is out of the question for us. So what can we do? Planning a rv road trip is never easy, but it helps to have a theme. Our theme this trip is to try to visit as many dams, reservoirs and lakes as we can in a 2-3 week period. Along the way, we’ll do our best to daily vlog the highs and lows. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

We want to thank each of you for following along on our Dam journey and for the comments that you are sharing. Since we are on the road with very little cell service we want be answering all the comments, but be assured that we read each one and they are greatly appreciated. We will try to answer any questions you have when we return from this trip.
So glad to know my husband isn't the only one watching others! 😅 Turkey's are so funny when they run. 🦃
There's nothing like "People Watching"! It's an education and a learning experience. LOL! Be Safe and Stay Healthy!
There are a lot of comments that confirm a lot of people love to “People Watch”. Thanks for watching.
Nature, comedy, relaxation, and exercise -what could be better? Not in a rocking chair but love to sit and watch the world go by.
Thanks so much for you comment. We appreciate you watching.
People watching is what old folks do..to reflect and to learn ! Youngun's are to busy to stop and observe. IMO that's natures way of allowing them to create experiences that provides wisdom when they do come to a stop..and people watch :-) Thank you for sharing another delightful day on your dam trip.
Thank you for your insight on people watching, a very wise perspective.
Yay! Another update from the Traveling Trekkers. My husband and I have been to the places you are visiting but nearly always in the fall after the leaves are changing and the wildflowers are almost bloomed out. It is nice to see the area while it is still green and lush, although fall is still my favorite time. Napping in a hammock seems like fun - once you get everything just right. 😉 You guys seem to eat a like we do when we camp. In other words - real food. We like cooking and addressing the challenges of making do when you are camping, not always having the usual utensils and cooking tools. I know some people eat mostly sandwiches but we enjoy grilling, using our big electric skillet and sometimes the crockpot. I look forward to tomorrow’s chapter of this trip as you always make me antsy to pack up the camper and head out! Thank you!! P.S. When we went to Yellowstone, we looked for Bear the whole time we were there, but never saw even one. We did see a bunch of other wildlife but ....Owen, no bear. 😔
I think fall would be a better time to visit the Smokies because it was still quite hot. We may have to go back. We appreciate your comment.
Looked like a great trip and that section on the setting up the hammock was funny as ever. Oh and share with Lynn that this “old guy” loves to watch people set up camp.
I’m glad Owen isn’t the only one that does the “old guy” watching. Thanks for watching.
The hammocks looked great! My husband and I named the hammock a "wife flipper" because of "my flipping adventure" the first time I tried to sit in the hammock....and no one got hurt....lol. It is fun to watch others set up camp. You learn new ideas or what not to do. Thank you for sharing, and thank you for giving thanks for your food!
Glad you didn’t get hurt with the “wife flipper”.
@@VANTREKKINGlifestyle Me too! We both started laughing so hard after it was over!
So sweet you guys saying the blessing before dinner! Love that area! Those e bikes look pretty cool! Thanks for sharing!
We might always show saying the blessing but it’s something we always do.
Thank you for sharing , another great video . I watch also how they set up and close up .
Beautiful scenery you have there in the smoky mountains. Few good chuckles always make fun . Be safe and be kind !!!!
You are so welcome. Thanks for following along.
Thank you so much for including that very last clip! God Bless You. You are in my prayers!
Thank you so much.
Great video start to finish. Cades Cove has been a favorite place to visit since I was a kid. Yeah, those Enos can be tricky. You guys are so fun and adventurous. Thanks for the trips!
We appreciate you following along.
Hi guys! I really enjoyed seeing you have a "lazy" day, for once! Part of traveling for me is just being in the moment and powering down, a little, so I'm glad to see you two aren't always zipping around! I've been slowly introducing your videos to my husband, as we/(I) are Wannabees, so he can see how possible it is to take kayaks and bikes, and the room, etc. and have fun! Keep up the fun videos! By the way, I love to read, but I also love to people watch to learn something new! See you tomorrow!
We tend to show us doing things, but we like powering down too. Powering down isn’t very interesting for people to watch.
BTW, since we too are in a B class and it takes us 10 minutes to set up, we watch others set up all the time. It is so amazing that it takes the pull behinds hours to get their junk out and set up. We laugh as we enjoy life! David snd Juanita
I totally agree less time setting up and more time enjoying life. Thanks for watching.
Beautiful scenery.....love going with you on your travels...thanks!
We appreciate you following along.
The boat dock is the perfect people watching place. It can provide hours of entertainment.
You are right, John. We once saw someone throw their boat's anchor on the dock itself.
We got to do some of that too.
That’s pretty funny. 😆
@@VANTREKKINGlifestyle The people on the dock ran for their lives!
My grill came today and it's great...It's because of you I purchase one. Thanks for all your videos. Be safe & healthy.
That is awesome. Take you time seasoning it and have fun. If in doubt set it cooler than you think you should. 👍
I love Cade's Cove!!! Looks lovely
We Love Cade’s Cove too. Thanks for watching.
Nice ride...being outdoors is the best! Hi Maggie!
We totally agree about being outside. Thanks for watching.
People watching is a favorite pastime when camping.
You would get along great with Owen. We appreciate you watching and commenting.
We are headed there towards the end of this week. Spending 3 nights in Cosby TN and 5 nights in Maggie Valley. Cannot wait, your videos have given me some great pointers on what to see.
We hope you have a fun and safe trip.
We just got back from a National Park Campground in New Brunswick CA. I watched an older come in around dusk and start setting up their tent site. They were at it for a couple hours getting everything out and set up. What a pain. So thankful it only takes a few minutes with our campervan. I wouldn't have had the patience.
Makes for a good, free show to watch though doesn't it. :-)
Great video!
Thanks.
Now that’s livin
It was a fun trip. Thanks for watching.
What the Dam Mess, A dam video of a Dam trip without any Dams, or should I say A dam free Dam video... Dam Fun!
That’s a lot of dams... this was the place Owen want to see that
“Dam Bear”.
We just ordered a Travato and really enjoy your posts. Greetings from Savannah, Georgia
Congratulations!
Any video that begins with sizzling bacon is gonna be good. Campgrounds can be like visitng a human zoo. Yes, we people watch in campgrounds. Everywhere as a matter of fact.
Bacon is a good way to start the day when camping. thanks for watching.
Im glad they open the loop for bikes every Wed and all day - unfortunately it stop at end of Sept -- rode that with a single speed bike- tough
I admire you for riding the loop with a single speed bike... there were a lot of hills
Maggie is a dear hunter and yes I like to watch other people too. You guys are great together and you also bless your meal.
We appreciate you watching and commenting.
I sure do envy you two. Being all out in nature and enjoying yourselves. Surgery has sidelined me for awhile so I take pleasure in watching you two. Signed on when you were doing Alaska. Gotta make a comment though. Sure liked to see you two giving thanks for your meal. Keep up the good work.
We hope you get better soon so you can get out and enjoy nature. We alway give thanks. Thanks for the comment it means a lot
Yes, we do watch other people set up and take down...sometimes you get a new idea, sometimes you watch and wonder why it would take 2 hours to set up a pop up. The wildlife was awesome as were the streams. You gave the bikes a good workout! I still haven’t taken mine off-road. It looked like they did great! Yummy supper! Thanks for bringing us with you! See you tomorrow! (Jane from SC❤️🙏🏻)
The bikes do great off road. The third time we road them we took them on a mountain bike trail with a lot of switch backs, they are pretty heavy to take switch backs for me anyway, the bike did better than I did. As always thanks for following along.
@@VANTREKKINGlifestyle 👍❤️
Lazy day that’s what I’m talking about....
We love lazy days too.
One of our favorite places on earth. Safe travels and happy tails!
Ours too. Thanks so much for watching.
Man y’all cook up some good eatin!!!!
Eating good is our reward.
Owen, you had me laughing so hard when you were getting in the hammock! That was hilarious. And loved your bazinga shot (I could just imagine Sheldon in the ball cage!) Also loved all the deer they are so beautiful. Hopefully you'll see a bear soon, but not too close. I so enjoy watching you both, and Maggie. Safe travels.
I cracked up to watching Owen trying to get in the hammock that ended up on the ground. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment.
Your videos always make me hungry. Nice bike ride ,though did seem to be a lot of traffic. Lots of people watch other people for entertainment lol.Enjoy the journey!
There was a lot of traffic, but it was still fun. Thanks for following along.
Love the Bing Bang reference! One of my favorite episodes. You guys are a hoot! Thanks for the morning chuckle. 🌞
We love the Big Bang Theory and use that reference a lot. glad we make you chuckle.
I love Cade’s Cove! I always feel so at home there. Reared early on a farm and our house was that same circa house. Love the Cove!👍🤠🇺🇸🙏
Thanks so much for watching.
Nice video guys. We were there on this past Friday. We didn’t have our van nor the e-bikes. Watching your video sure has made us want to do more.
One thing if you can. Where did you get your adapter for the griddle? We are still using the green cans.
Keep on trekking and catch you on the next one.
We got the adapter on Amazon. It’s on our amazon store in the outside section. Here’s the link if you are interested. www.amazon.com/shop/VanTrekkingLifestyle
Lynn there is nothing like “old man watching “. There is nothing I enjoy more than once I have my StarCraft pop up trailer erected than a relaxing chair to sit and watch other poor sob’s try to get ready for a night out camping. This looks like another wonderful video guys. Cheers!!!
It’s good to know Owen isn’t the only one that does “old man watching”. Thanks for following along. Cheers to you!!!
Owen just wanted to ask what month did you leave home to go to Alaska. And thanks for another great video
We left in late June due to our granddaughters middle school graduation. We would have liked to have left earlier but it worked out just fine.
What brand bikes are you using? They look like something we could handle 🙏. Thanks for your videos !!
We use the Rad mini step thru. They are great!
The loop is exclusively hiking and biking on Wednesdays for a few more weeks. Not sure if they will repeat that next Summer or not.
We were not there on a Wednesday, but it would have been a really nice without cars.
I do that! Takes a lot to bore me! I just could watch nature for hours and also well...people watch! My hubby is the reader!!! I might read at night in the bed from time to time. Y’all are a fun couple! (Are those electric bikes?)
Thank you. We are as fun as an old couple should be we guess. Yes. Rad Mini Step Thru 2s.
@@VANTREKKINGlifestyle you two are probably about mine abs my husbands age! I try to say that I’m “young-old” haaa, keeps me from accepting the inevitable! We are like y’all though, pretty young at heart. I’m hoping we can get a class b in about a year though! Maybe if we do, we can meet y’all!! I have roots in NC, GA, VA, PA. My roots are GA and NC. Live in Florida currently
What brand of e-bikes do you have and how do you like them?
The e-bikes are Rad mini step thru. We love them and there’s nothing mini about them.
So what is charging your lithium batteries if they aren't connected to alternator and/or solar? Do you need to be plugged in to charge them? If so, that would defeat their purpose. Sounds like some rewiring is needed. Do you have an underhood generator or 2nd alternator?
Yes, just charging when on shore power. And you're right that defeats the purpose for sure. No 2nd alternator.
Owen, we did Charohala Highway on a 2005 Goldwing at 38 degrees. We have to ask about the trailer and gas mileage? How much of a decrease? And is it working out for travel?
Trailer is actually pretty good. Sundowner 5x8 MiniGo. No impact on mpg but a little slower climbing mountains.
What propane hose are you using to connect the Travato?
It's in the outside section of our Amazon store. Here's the link www.amazon.com/shop/VanTrekkingLifestyle
