Who Is Ernie Ball?

- Ernie Ball is one of the companies that helped make the electric guitar (and strings) what it is today. I get to sit down with Brian Ball and hear him tell the story of Ernie Ball and it’s evolution. I also get to tour the factory and make a custom version of a Music Man St. Vincent guitar. Big thanks to Brian Ball and all the Ernie Ball family for having me out to their factory! In the Comments tell me your favorite Ernie Ball gear and what Ernie Ball gear you want to get.

I never knew I wanted to know the history of Ernie Ball until I learned the history of Ernie Ball... knowledge is gooder
Killgore Trout that should be a T-Shirt
"More good" is more good than "gooder," if you want to avoid a ticket from the Grammar Police. ;P
That's most gooderish!
More gooder knowledge is
👍 😁
You had me at "Ernie Ball was a surfer".
You need to give your video editor a raise. Amazing content and production.
And that background music. Sooo nice, that lush, reverbed-out 50's tone.
The Camerman too... with that Slider & the low B Shot√
@@CaalamusTube As a professional editor/producer for a major network I completely agree..he/she need a raise!
You don't need to change the camera angle 3 times every sentence and constantly pan. It distracts from what he's saying. Maybe it's just that I'm from a different generation.
@@jeffjuhre1494 get out of the way old man! XP
Nah, but in all seriousness... listen to the earliest Elvis recordings, or "Rumble" by Link Wray.
Now listen to "the Dark Side of the Moon".
Do you really want to argue against the Artform evolving?
You aren't arguing for wahabi extremist interpretations of "god's will" & insisting that Music is evil & we should only sing.
You want to go back to nothing but Acoustic Instruments?
So why are you suggesting that Cinematography linger in Midcentury tropes & not advance?
"Time keeps on slippin' ...into the future!"

Probably the best guitar related content on CZcams. Thanks Josh!
What do you mean, "probably"? The best, hands down. These posts make my week.
Agreed! 😉
That sparkle finish St. Vincent shown for a hot second is f@&$ing amazing!
My brother who is a big fan still hasn’t gotten one. Maybe I’ll have to do it.
I was a bit bummed that we didn't get a more complete look at it. A real flash of guitar lust in my heart at that moment.
So Ernie Ball is the powerhouse of the music industry
THE MITOCHONDRIA IS THE POWERHOUSE OF THE CELL!!!!
FOILED IT!
I used to date Ernie's sister, Mary, back in the mid-60's. Very sweet girl. Never met Ernie, though.
Ray Staar I used to date his brother, Hairy.
@@thegatorgar6730 I used to date his parrot, Polly Wrinkly

I’ve never owned a Music Man in my 30+ years of playing and now I really want one.
You bastard! 😘
I knew Ernie and also Sterling. I think Brian forgot to say, that prior to putting together the Slinkies, As I recall Ernie was the first to sell strings in gauges as opposed to sets. The most popular choices by his customers came to be marketed and sold in Slinky sets with different gauges and colors. For many many years I personally bought separate strings to form my favourite set, and asked Sterling for that combination a long time ago. Happy to see that the Ultra Slinky set is now in place. That's the set to use for my playing style. Give them a try folks and enjoy the ease of bending in the top and the twang in the bottom. I love :-)
Regards from Denmark
VP jr might still be under my foot when I’m buried. It’s an extension of the electric guitar for me.
I’d like a St Vincent!
Ernie Ball 10-52 Heavy Bottoms were my jam back in the day. Who doesn’t have a black Ernie Ball guitar strap that’s never been washed?!?!? Respect ✊🏽 to Ernie Ball
Fuck people wash their guitar straps?
Josh that shell pink is soooo beautiful, I'm seriously jealous
I own a Music Man StingRay 5 - bought it with my grandfather's legacy and it's one of my most valued possessions. I've played Ernie Ball strings for as long as I can remember too - sure I've gone over to other brands from time to time but I alway end up back on Ernie Ball strings.
Someday I hope to see a "Who is Josh Scott?" video!
A Super Slinky user since the mid-70s, and a blue St. Vincent guitar in the future.
Fantastic video, as always. Keep 'em coming.
I’m a sucker for classic guitar designs but the St Vincent is one of very few contemporary designs that I really really like.
favorite vlog to date, nice one man xx
Awesome video! Love the insights you share with all of us!! Keep it up!
Fantastic video as usual. Great content and production values. This is one of the greatest music related channels ever imo. Thanks for everything JHS!
Killer video and all your content is great. Thanx and keep keeping on.
Your production quality is always top notch, but this episode brought it to a whole new level. It was a pleasure to watch and more important, it left me wanting more! Congrats!
JHS, never stop vlogging. These are great.
Great video man
I've been playing bass for about 15 years. I think I invested about $4000+ on Ernie Balls but my Stingray earned me living.
Stunning video!! Such a good interview, also like the video editing and of course all of your content 👍👍👍
Excellent video!
Thanks for making this Josh. You rock!
I've been playing Ernie Ball strings since 1979. Incredible product!
Awesome video Josh. Thanks for doing this, great idea.
Awesome video. Thank you!
great video, the shots/angles were smooth. really enjoyed the video.
Awesome video, absolutely beautiful guitar!
Fantastic mini-doc Josh, well done!
Very short and very high quality documentary Josh. Congrats!
I love youre channel ,always interesting.
Great videos !
I've got a theory that approximately 2% of dislikes on youtube are accidental clicks whilst trying to scroll down. This has to be the case here. Who would thumbs down a JHS Pedals video, really? *Clicks link* "Oh I just hate guitar, and effects pedals, especially when a cool, humble dude who knows what he's talking about shares new, insightful things with me. Buhhh." I love every video this channel puts out. Great stuff!!
I love that you guys support other brands through your own. Much respect!
my Ernie Bulls are my favorite piece of equipment ! Great video you guys do quality work thru and thru so appreciate these days of instant gratification and throw away. Peace !
A really nice vid telling a great story. Josh, you get cooler all the time.
So cool, something I always wondered as a kid and I’m glad a found out the history this way! Also that guitar... wow
I look forward to every Thursday now because of this channel. Thank you so much for making such amazing content. Your passion (as well as the passion of your guests) is contagious. Truly inspiring.
As far as Ernie Ball stuff I own; sadly it's only strings, straps, and picks. I absolutely adore the design of the St. Vincent Model. That might be next on my list.
Ernie Ball is the guy who supplies me with the bad ass guitar stings. 🤘
Great stuff, again.
Definitely would love to own a St. Vincent. Love her music and the guitar just looks amazing
Earnie Ball.... one of my favorite guitar strings, first top end guitar strings I used and propelled my music to new fields!.... grate video, great company, great family..... thank you JHS, you are as much as an icon as Earnie Ball.....love the vibe and coolness that you transpire in your videos!
i was on the fence about a new volume pedal, I am no longer on the fence. Ball it is. great video!
Love all the "history of" videos. You're killing it dude!
very cool. thank you, you guys deserve an Emmy or something
Tks Josh great vids.
Another great video!
Great video! As usual.
I have had a Ernie Ball strap on every guitar since 9th grade.
I always have one or two new ones ready to be called to duty!
That all black noir St. Vincent is the stuff of dreams. I’ve never wanted an all one color guitar ever until that model came out...so, SO cool :) great video as always, they always seem so short though and leave me with questions!!
@JHS Pedals as JHS artist and an Ernie Ball/ Music Man artist, thx so much for this video. Great content.. Wish more ppl knew the amazing history of the Ball family and EBMM
Such a good content! Awesome....
I want more videos like this. This was extremely good and educational.
Straight up; I wish we could just hang out. I love this channel and the content you bring. Keep it up and let Nick know he is awesome. He isn’t on the frame but he is definitely heard and known.
Nice touch with the pink hints throughout too.
Great video!!
Great video, history is interesting especially when told in a great way like yours! I've been using their strings since I started playing guitar, and now I finally got one of their volume pedals, I always loved their look and their feel. Someday I'll be able to get one of their Cutlass!
Dude in a totally normal way I’m in love with you and every one of your videos thank you so much
Can't wait for next week
Great episode Josh
DUDE, I’ve always had respect for you because you respect the guitar community and not just your own company. And this made me love Ernie ball even more. Keep making content!
I've only ever seen Ernie Ball guitars at trade shows or on stage pretty much. They need to start selling these guitars at music stores especially GC for crying out loud, it ain't like they can't afford to put em out there! Heck they would probably sell them for a change! These are great instruments that sound amazing with distortion. Have ever heard John Petrucci live from the G3 tour Or any and every thing else? I t makes the hair stand up on your arms! Let's not forget guys like Albert Lee and Johnny Hiland I mean, my goodness! Thank you Ernie Ball!
great video josh
Very inspiring episode! i'm a main user of their strings, started with the 9ths now mostly 10s and in my strat 11s.
Amazing show as always. I love how you promote and support other companies outside your own. Ernie Ball Stingray is one of my favourite basses of all time. Active EQ plays like a dream and is just an overall bad ass.
Using Ernie Ball cobalt strings , and I have the Ernie Ball volume pedal with the JHS mod. Great video, can not wait to hear the distortion video with the new guitar!
Awesome video! I love my EBMM Axis Super Sport.
enjoyed this very much
as always, a great video with lots of history. you should make an ernie ball doc
Great episode, Josh! I´m the proud owner of an Ernie Ball Silhouette HSH that I love since I put my hands on it, some twenty something years ago. I use it as my main axe and feel always surprised by the sounds I can get out of it. Love the fretboard, the pickup combinations and the ergonomics. Looking forward to hear the St. Vincent in your next episode.
Incredible video Josh. Been using Ernie ball volume for 15 years. Still the best. Owned a Luke 3 for a time that was a stellar instrument as well.
That blue metal flake guitar is definitely to die for!
For me, Ernie Ball is definitely synonymous with Power Slinkys. By themselves, they are great. But with drop tuning, you get some grit that will shake your fillings out! Fantastic.
Wow, another awsome video! I own a kinda unique "Emergenza" Axis SS given to me by Beth who was working at EBMM in 2005! One of the best guitars I've ever played with and definitely a keeper!
That pink St Vincent is everything 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Have always used Ernie Ball strings of varying gauges Shinny Tops Heavy Bottoms at present VP junior Volume is on my board. Can't imagine rock n roll without this brand. I have always found the string packaging to be a sort of badge of honor, when there is a set in a guitar case or sitting on top of amp you always noticed it. Glad to see the family carrying on the tradition.
Great episode as always
Best Channel ideed !thx Josh
This channel is just next level awesome. Really cool content. I rock Ernie Ball .11s on all my electric guitars.
Looking forward to hearing the new guitar.
Thank you so much for making this happen!!! Love your new guitar. Can I buy one?!!!
This was cool! I’ve mainly used the VP jr. and some accessories, but the Valentine has got my interest. It seems like a very versatile guitar.
A well developed video!!! 🤘🔥
Really good video about Ernie Ball.😎
It's always a good time when I watch a JHS video. Really enjoyed this one.
I've known for a long time that Ernie Ball = Music Man, but never who he was as a person.
Seems to me that he pushed hard! ....and that's usually the best way to get there.
Amazing video! Been using Ernie Ball strings for over 25 years now. M-Steel strings are my jam and Everlast on my acoustic guitar. Also have Volume pedal, straps and tool kit that is always with me.
I have a volume pedal from the mid 80s that I recently sent back to the factory for refurbishment. Love that pedal even though it's so huge compared to the newer ones. Great video! Thank you!
Got a Sterling Cutlass. Love it!
V-Shape neck is awesome!
Great video
I found this story truly fascinating and yes i use Ernie Ball guitar strings for years , electric and nylon ball end . Excellent quality and sound .
Like, Holy Shit! That may very well have been your greatest vid yet! Super entertaining, super informative, and hot damn, I need a St. Vincent in a custom colour too! Ernie Ball has always made fantastic basses and I never spent any time with one of their guitars, but they've always looked well built, but am now more intrigued than ever! Great job!
Thanks for this! I really didn’t know much about the EB brand until now. I’ve owned their volume pedal for years, but that’s about it. I want one of those Annie Clark guitars now!
Thanks for being so honest and supportive of other brands, that's rare.
thanks for your videos. more inspiring than you know
I have been using Ernie Ball strings for over 20 years. 9's, 10's and just tried the hybrid. I did not know until now that I need a Music man. You, Dan and Mick have costs me thousands. Thank's Josh
I recently bought a new EBMM Stingray 5HH Special that I adore! Great video!
That was so great
Thanks for teaching this old dog some new tricks! I played a Musicman 65 reverb head and it sounded great even with a solid-state preamp!
