Pentagon Dark the Lucha Underground spark?

- Pentagon Jr is famous for his work in AEW and Jim Cornette calling him Penthouse. But before all of that he was in making a name for himself in the US in Lucha Underground. This was even before his time in TNA and this is all of his matches and how the gimmick came about of Pentagon Dark. Will it be better than his TNA run where he got a B? It's your decision so vote down in the comments! He had some matches against Brian Cage, Rey Mysterio and shockingly four intergender matches. I know a lot of you hate it when male wrestlers face the women but it happened a fair bit in this video! And it was actually alright for the most part!

Giving it an A. He was One of the Few Good things LU had going near the End.

I would definitely like to see more Lucha Underground video regarding wrestler runs. So many good matches and insane storylines.
Morrison vs Luchasaurus!
Too bad they really screwed everything up, leaving wrestlers with bad tastes by not releasing their contracts even tho the damn show was over... I would also love for it to return, but if there isn't a new management running things nobody would actually trust them to return. Sad, but luckily there are so many companies with good wrestling that I don't mind too much
The fact that despite so many losses, fans still cheer for Pentagon honestly speaks for his charisma. He's probably one of the few wrestler that losing match doesn't matter because his charisma will regularly overshadowed that lost.
Also Pentagon pretty much shine the best in hardcore match but unfortunately, he's not usually in one in major US promotion.
I couldn't agree more Mr. Pickens
@@TheRvDGamers didn't expected to run into another believer here but thank you
They tried to recreate this gimmick in AEW... and it didn't turn out so well.
Lack of storylines and character does it
You mean that Penta Oscuro thing ? That was dumb.
🤓☝️@@volodymyrbilyk555
They have storylines, not that much of a habit of making them great @@volodymyrbilyk555
@@ysetiadjicool theme though
An A imo. The character was amazing, and he felt like a star. Plus, the matches were definitely the best ones this season
A
Yes, a lot of his matches are similar. That's a booking issue, not really a him issue. Dude's crazy and can go hard. He's generally solid af in the ring. And he can make the other wrestler look great, as long as they are good. Guy can work with almost anyone.
His 3 matches with the girls are some of my favorite of his. The story, how it all seemed believable & those moves!! Your commentary on it was spot on. Being a fan of his and watching the matches live (when they aired) it was really cool to see and made me a bigger fan of all 4 of them
We need more Lucha Underground
Mlw got your fix. They even brought in Dario and he was glorious - he killed Salina, run roughshod, then Salina came back to take over.
@@volodymyrbilyk555as much as I enjoy MLW their taping schedule really spoils the show for me. I hate how a wrestler disappears for two shows then returns. I just like consistency. It could be a very good show.
@@Markyd123 yeah, that's a problem. Their prepandemic shows with Fatu were tremendous - early Cobra Unit had vibes
I love Penta, I am one of those suckers chanting his name , A as Lucha Underground as its his best work in the states by far.
Io Shirai is also in WWE now as a WWE Women's Champion
King Cuerno is also in WWE as Santos Escobar.
@@Dazz-z7w Prince Puma is Ricochet too
The fact Io's the champion is a bit more significant. Also former NXT Women's champion, has held both Women's Tag Team Titles in WWE and is one title away from Grand Slam Champion status in WWE.
Literally everyone from LU are on WWE, TNA or AEW nowadays. It's sad how badly LU dealt with everything, for example refusing to release wrestlers or let them wrestle elsewhere.. The show was awesome and they ended everything with bad tastes all around, nobody would propably return if they came back somehow.
Yeah, she’s always been really good. A well deserved title.
This run gets an A...no other company he has been apart of has ever come anywhere close to channeling how god tier he was in LU and he was allowed to basically be the ultimate wildcard and that Black Lotus match is the greatest televised intergender match of all time and honestly that match alone should get him an A rating.
Always great to see more Lucha Underground stuff on your channel...... insert day number whatever here of me requesting Marty "The Moth" Martinez's run in Lucha Underground, especially after his feud with Pentagon here.
That dude's run was soooo good. From comedy jobber to psycho heel world champion.
The weirdest thing about the Black Lotus triad match is seeing Mayu Iwatani perform as heel, she is the ultimate babyface in STARDOM
IIRC, he had to be called Pentagon Dark in LU due to copyright issues with AAA owning the Pentagon Jr. name. That's also why he worked indies as Penta El 0 Miedo.
Just like LA Parka and WCW L A Park are different because of copyright
@@oatz8449 yeah, like La Parka, AAA own the Pentagon Jr. character and likeness. It's why they call him Penta in AEW.
Sometimes I wonder if Tony Khan ever watched LU. If he had, he surely wouldn't be discounting the talent as much as he has. Seriously, the difference between LU Penta and AEW Penta is shocking.
I mean, he's been a tag team and trios champion.
At first, he was booking him more times than often but i think because of CMLL is why he doesn't so much.
Last match was with Eddie kingston and Pac vs YB and Okada.
He was relegated to tag team division in AEW because Young Bucks need tag team to make them good.
@@ysetiadji yeah, I saw that mid-comment, but I feel their tag division could use more storylines. Not just relying purely on "watch this never before seen team-bout" or "we'll book our top teams with storylines and the rest just flounder." What excuse is there for not giving Penta anything besides title runs. It just makes those wins forgettable.
@@Metanite504 I too like that he at least gets booked. If AEW is happy with AEW Penta, then that's fine. Maybe he's supposed to be a midcarder. Ain't no way we can call him a top guy. Otherwise he'd either be out his tag team or the division itself would be given more promo time.
It couldn't be he is almost 10 years older
I will go to my grave believing if Lucha would have been on any other network like Telemundo or Univision then maybe we would still be seeing new episodes. Not saying it would be a WWE or TNA rival, but could have been something special.
I wish it could be like that. However AAA was looked down upon for doing the action scene on Lucha underground. Maybe if it was one of the newer channels today...
@@Vampiro60181 so maybe like Vice?
@@BrandanTheBroker or even that Network TNA is on.
@@Vampiro60181 what network is TNA on these days? I can never find them. I can find WOW and Championship Wrestling From Hollywood, but never TNA and that's kinda sad
@@BrandanTheBroker AXS TV, which owns the promotion
I honestly thought Pentagon Dark had more than 30 matches with Lucha Underground
PD was definitely one of my favourite LU wrestlers and the MVP of the poor season 4 😃😃😃
Pentagon did between the 2 gimmicks.
Pentagon Jr did but dark only had 29 as the company finished prematurely 😢
Just in case you didn't know matanza from lucha underground was Jeff Cobb who has tons of great matches in other companies too.
Laughed a little how you spelled Kairi Sane's name 😂 But I understand tbh. I like her as a wrestler, it's sad that Vince really didn't get her and butchered her first run. Triple H is luckily way better at running the show!
Lucha Underground, still the absolute best wrestling-based show ever.
Incredible how much crazy sh-t that talent roster did for such a low payday.
As someone who’s never seen it aside from the Hawk’s vids, I really dig the dark lighting and dirty ass mat they had in LU. Makes it look like a crime thriller kinda
This was pretty freakin awesome, not just Penta but seeing alot of other familiar faces doing cool stuff!
I absolutely love long videos. Please give us more, because I love your content
"I know you don't like long videos" I'm down for 40+ minutes if it's Lucha Underground.
I'd say an A... crowd loved em, good matches, nice attire and good believable power moves.
I'm a huge Pentagon Jr. fan. I have a Pentagon Jr. mask that was hand made in Mexico. I call it Pentagon Blood.
I’d give him an A.
Pentagon was legit the first Mofo that I think of that Brought back The Coolness aspect of wrestling and Lucha it was some gangster shit his charisma was off the roof weather it was from his chanting of Cero Miedo or even after a move that made him even more Hyped up.
You know, I understand why Pentagon is not everyone's cup of tea. I absolutely fell in love with him right from the jump though. He is not that traditional luchador, more like a lucha strong style and I really enjoy that. Plus his look is so damn evil that I cannot help but be hooked.
thank you for making the world a better place.
I guess it's an A at least because of the overall popularity among the crowd. They really went alive for his matches
Also (last comment from me this time), the masked guy at the end with Vampiro at 39:37 is played by an Australian wrestler called Australian Suicide (not related to Suicide from TNA). There were obviously plans for him being with Vampiro but it got shut down when Lucha Underground got cancelled after Season 4. His character name was.... and I'm being serious here... "Hexagon Dark".... (slow claps)
To be fair, Penta’s first rival was Octagon Jr.
Seems like they were planning some kind of "Lucha God" storyline with faction involving Wade Barrett, Jack Swagger, Vampiro, Hexagon, Dario Cueto's father, and probably a possesed Taya. Against a new faction lead by Aerostar and newly resurrected Dario Cueto.
Hexagon Dark 😂 man I miss when wresting wasn’t so serious
I loved this run when I initially watched it. Now I’m wondering if I was more drawn to the character vs. the wrestling. Would love more coverage of Lucha Underground!
Hey marky, you could try to do Damian Priest in ROH, he'd be a good fit for this season
Somehow, I think his run as Punishment Martinez just barely edges out what he has now in terms of quality.
The Irish car bomb was a move that Scott steiner invented in Japan he did it a bit in WCW too. It's a back flip body slam so pretty crazy stuff for the late 80s and early 90s for WCW.
I'm still waiting for the RingKaKing version of LuchaUnderground. We're the only 2 RKK fans I've ever known of, so I know you'll love it just as much. Be good man.
What a full review episode by episode?
@@Markyd123 I was thinking more 4 at a time like your Ring Ka King and then a full season compilation with any interviews you could get from former stars, I'll get a punch in the gut for this one, but Chavo is around and would be a good source, That's half serious, half you'd have said the same thing if our places were reversed. Have a great weekend man.
Penta's run in Lucha Underground is what made him one of my favorite wrestlers in the world today. There's no one quite like him. Cero miedo!
So much spams with piledrivers, especially Canadian destroyer
People who haven't seen it will assume Penta was already a made man, but nah, he got over all on his own from scratch. It's a shame AEW won't let him cut Spanish promos. As a Spanish-speaker, he cut great promos. And if I had to compare it, it'd be something like Kevin Steen. Intense, but in Spanish.
Crowd reaction was great. In ring action was always solid, even when he was overshadowed. He was a bit weird psychology-wise: he's not a big man, but couldn't really work a small man role either. I honestly did not remember him losing so much, though, it's kind of weird considering he was definitely a big part of the show. The run is a B for me: it should have been an A, but the booking held him back a bit. And goddammit that episode with the Black Lotus Triad was a joy!
In the beginning he didn’t really do much, but overtime, he kept improving to the the point of having the best matches, he deserves an A for improvement.
Great vid as always! Whats the background music playing around 3:30 minutes in
Lucha Underground benefited from being filmed in a rough part of LA, so a huge chunk of the audience could understand Pentagon jr. and the other luchadors more or less.
I know fantastical wrestling is easy to screw up, but the idea of doing a wrestling promotion season by season, having everybody come in to play a character and tape their storyline, was genius. I'm surprised no one else as tried it.
12:06 From a weird intengender match to a WrestleMania title bout, Io has certainly come far.
Well deserved after seeing this. Like, wow.
2:18 It's a shame Vampiro got stung by 800 bees.
Matanza Cueto is Jeff Cobb from ROH/NJPW
Late with the reply but the movie perc angle was in I’m pretty sure it was the warrior (2011) he was a Russian mma fighter
I reviewed three of his movies didn’t realise there was another one?
He’s also a random guy in a few Movies like Sharknado 2 (where Rifftrax call him ‘overinflated Vin Diesel’), The Last Witch Hunter and Dylan Dog- Dead of Night.
It was warrior, not the warrior. But you're right, Angle played Koba... that film had a great cast.
@@jimbo_1312 I always found it using the warrior sorta force of habit now 😂
Is this the same Vampiro that had that match with Sting in WCW?
If so he looks Way different, I wouldn't have guessed that was him in a million years.
Two decades and an unhealthy life style can do that. Stay clean stay lean my friend!
@@Markyd123 you got that right, I still enjoy a little smoke here and there but I quit drinking and everything else over 10 years ago. About to be 40 in June and I would hate to see what I'd be like if I hadn't cleaned up my addictions.
Another one that's hard to recognize is Sunny, karma and time double teamed the shit outta that lady.
😅👍
my favorite Hawk line is "then he hit him with a samoan drop... and I was ok with that (if they're fat or samoan of course.) Penta almost had to catch a brick !
"the mask is filtering out some bad breathe" idk but these words came out in the wake of some crazy moments between two lucha freaks sounds pretty hilarious
I’d say an A, definitely redeemed himself in the 2nd half.
Also gotta get a Yoshi Tatsu main roster run for ROH in
RKK Scott Steiner for ROH please
ShoutOut to Jeff Cobb and his Skills! Matanza was a very credible and strong character 🙌🏾
Lucha underground was such a cool promotion. All these guys are crazy talented, I could watch these people fly around the ring all day!
@Markyd123 please do Bruiser Brody matches in WCCW/WCWA for Ring of the Hawk please 🙏
Now that we are getting Keith Lee soon, I’m with you brother let’s get bruiser Brody
Commenting on every new video until J&J security gets a video
Man you really didn't hear his message in the last episode.
I know how much you love Chavo Jr. I saw him main event a show booked in a theater room at a local casino here in Edmonton against Lance Storm. The ceiling was so low that when a wrestler stood on the top turnbuckle they could literally touch the ceiling with their hands. It was brutal and not in the good way.
Really wish LU didnt lose the amazing vibe it had for its first 2 seasons. Man it was astronically good to watch, i seriously miss it.
Vampiro looking like Lars from the band Rancid.
Also, Matanza's finisher is incorrectly stated as the Irish Car Bomb (I think that's the Irish Airbourne AKA OVE's finisher before they went to TNA?). Matanza's finisher name is The Wrath Of The Gods (That spinning powerslam thing). Under the mask, he is Hawaiian wrestler Jeff Cobb and that same finisher is called The Tour Of The Islands.
The "Irish Car Bomb" wasn't incorrectly called, because it isn't the Tour of the Islands (he hits that much later in the match, at 4:16, Hawk called it "his wacky powerslam"). The "Irish Car Bomb" was the backflip slam he did at 3:55 where he holds his opponent in "sack of shit" position but instead of throwing the opponent backward like Scott Hall, he backflips and lands ontop of his opponent, that's the "Irish Car Bomb" (and for those interested, it's named after a drink like a boilermaker: a "bomb shot" of Irish cream and whiskey dropped into a glass of Irish stout). Here's someone doing it off a ladder (13 years ago this was posted!): czcams.com/video/xL-WpqB-gBM/video.htmlsi=0vatsDZyXeANkjk5
Drago was one of my favourite luchadores in LU, so underrated feels like he hardly ever won.
Drago was pushed heavily initially, then got lost in Rey Mysterio's shadow and completely dwindled when they forced him into that snake tribe as their hostage.
Pentagon Jr was my favourite wrestler from Lucha Underground and even though I don't understand him I think he's a good promo.
Yurei from the intergender match (second one in the order) is Mayu Iwatani and she is without exaggeration one of the best in the world today. I know that gets thrown around a lot now but she truly is one of the goats. Would highly recommend her matches with both of the ladies who were with her here in Iyo and Kairi.
9:50 "Kairi Sahney" lmfao
I only watched one or two seasons of Lucha Underground and dont remember much about it. I know Pentagon and Vampiro did have a match and at the end of the match it was revealed that Vampiro was behind Pentagons change. It was a good match and i didnt even think Vampiro could go anymore. I think it was a good match anyway. Haha and Ricochet/Puma was basically the guy for the whole first season.
The way you say Puma makes my head spin lol
Really glad you picked this topic Marky 👌 I Miss LU and even more so I miss the Cross Promoting between It and TNA. Even during the GFW darkness it was something to truly be hyped for. As much as TNA's production has shown recently just how much it needs Scott or someone of equal passion and attention to detail, I am a huge fan of the Lucha Bros and would love a TNA return. Not that Penta or Fenix are wasted in AEW at all but in TNA they still got to be the natural wonderful team they are and singles stars in a US promotion. TNA was and still would be the place where they could make a significant Impact in consistent solo matches and angles as well as the Tag division. Don't see it happening any time soon but it would be a major get for TNA if it did. Wish there was more space in AEW for them to do more in singles matches.
Great Upload
you gotta checkout swerve strickland's run in LU heavily underrated
You need to do a video on Marty the Moth video
Great video
Lucha Underground was so much fun. Although that ring looks like the floor of a slaughterhouse.
I watched lucha underground on Netflix when it was on there. The stories really hook you in and the athleticism is something else. How can I watch it again?
The gift of the god title belt looks really cool
Honestly, I would argue a B for Pentagon Dark in this one, purely because of how the character overshadowed his work, and his earlier loses did hurt him a bit. But overall quite enjoyable regardless.
What's that cool background music? Is that an obscure theme song?
Definitely need to do Fenix's run in Lucha Underground
I loved Johnny Mundo & Brian Cage on LU.
Lmfao at pizza driver
It's such a shame that Lucha Underground didn't work out, I think he fact that it happened during the peak of the smark indie spotfest no story needed zeitgeist hurt it. That and their business mismanagement.
He has a good look
Lucha unground made me a penta fan without a doubt
If you are impressed with IO Shirai in LU, you should look into her NXT run. During her time there and Stardom before that, she's considered one of the best women in-ring talent in wrestling.
Holy crap that iyo match was awesome
All I learned in this video is how badass Kairi Sane and Iyo Sky truly are. Those girls can truly beat someone up.
Anyone else think Matanza just pretty much looks like the guy from the Splatter House series on Sega Genesis?
😄👍
its hard for marky to keep his length down comments section 😂
Hopefully we see Roman’s title run when he loses. Will be a long ass video tho
Roman Reigns reign of terrior
I agree with IBeNerdy P.D does deserve an A especially from that match with marty
And for some reason i thought his match with Vampiro wouldve been up here
Love longer vids💪
I would give it an A but i'm also a huge Penta fan.
Always Loved this arena
Johnny Mundo kinda looks like a dollar store AJ Styles. At least in the first match, in the second Warfare, he looks more like a young Sean Waltman, 123-kid/early X-Pac days
Could you do for a ROH Karrion Kross in Lucha Underground as The White Rabbit?
Penta Dark is the best version of Penta
Tough call, but I’d lean towards an A
Ironically I think Pentagon Jr actually DOES fight Vampiro
Can you do the ice train WCW was he any good
Let's get The Dicks on Ring of the Hawk! Only 25 matches on WWE TV. You can do it, Marky!
Can You do a vid on tna/wwe wrestlers in mexican promotions? Abyss vs LA Park would be funny. Kurt Angle wrestled in mexico. Even slap nuts was in mexico.
I really want to make that video but the footage is hard to come by. There was actually a storyline where tna invader AAA
