Intro to the BBC's broadcast of the 1991 european cup final between Red Star Belgrade and Marseille. Telling the story of how the two sides reached the final.
terrible final but that Red Star team had some talent - pretty much all of them had top careers- Yugoslavia definitely would have won a major tournament if it hadn't broke up
Very few can match ferocity, loyalty and organization of Red Star fans. One who has not seen it, cannot fully comprehend and believe it. I only wish if there was fewer hooligans among them, but unfortunately that is common problem in soccer nowadays.
Michael M cant they just enforce global caps or something like that? im quite ignorant but cant they just restrict the buying power of all big clubs to make it more fair?
@@youngcitybandit For them its not about making it fair. Its about making money. Globalisation of football and heavy comercialization of UCL coresponds with the end of the Cold War.
@@michaelm2889 never read so many trues in my entire life. Also, you got it 100% right about Brazil, most good players stayed in their countries, now they just go for a Europa team.
Red star Belgrade + Marseille + Steaua Bucharest + Nottingham forest + Aston villa + Hamburg SV = 7 UCL Manchester city + Arsenal + Tottenham + Atletico + PSG + Roma + Lazio = 0 UCL
@supahdupahguy81 In Yugoslavia at the time (and maybe still now) they settled domestic draws in the league with penalties, so Red Star abandoned their usual flamboyant approach for a more pragmatic, defensive game knowing they held a major advantage over their opponents regarding spot-kicks.
Shame two brilliant sides played out such a boring final. For better or worse the Champions League/European Cup twenty years go looks like a different planet compared to now.
@supahdupahguy81 But the same seems to be true of about eight or nine cup finals out of every 10 sadly. Maybe the European finals should be two-legged home and away affairs too, like it is in the FA Youth Cup.
Dave Besag For an almost completely Serbian (and probably completely Yugoslav) side, they did great and deserved to win. Look at OM's lineup, it's international.
Cold War was never over. Just in "hibernation". Imperialistic Anglo-Saxons hate Serbs for centuries because Serbs love and defend their freedom and neutrality. The sickness and killers of the world are Anglo-Saxons. They killed half of Africa, Asia and the Indians of America.
@@vucocar8966 Not just Serbs, Macedonians, and former Russian contries, because they arnt under their control. Bulgaria, Romania have always had German and Italian Kings / Queens ruling. Likewise 'greeks' but they are a different story.
FR-S Rafa Red Star beat Bayern Munich 3-1 on aggregate in the semi final, Spartak Moscow beat Real Madrid 3-1 on aggregate in the quarter final, Marseille beat AC Milan in the quarter final and Spartak Moscow beat Napoli in the second round of the competition. Many surprises happened in that season!
@@junaldinho100 Didn't Red Star beat Bayern Munich 4-3 on aggregate? If my memory serves me right, Red Star won 2-1 in Germany, and the return leg in Belgrade finished 2-2?
Red Star had an amazing team and Marseille were no slouches themselves at the time but they delivered one of the worst games of football I've had the misfortune to watch
Milan was such a bitch to back out against Marseille while being held the greatest team at the time. They were the superior team but probably lost spirit after being surprised by a French team out of nowhere.
@davidronaldp hahahaa, sorry mate but your lousy club could only dream about winning CL, even Celtic won but Rangers? Never. 3:0 first leg = domination!

"Definitely"? That's a 100% fact, is it?
They'd have dominated the 90's

These Eastern European teams like Steaua and Red Star have been driven out of the competition by UEFA's new format and rules.

Yeah European politics also ruined Yugoslavia which broke it up.....then.....the European Union was formed right away!
