How Haiti spiralled into violent mayhem

  • Intense fighting and gang violence continues to create chaos in Haiti. The Caribbean nation is being ruled by a federation of criminal groups as politicians and other nations try to forge a transitional government.
Thousands have been killed and hundreds of thousands displaced, the United Nations estimates, with widespread reports of rape, torture and ransom kidnappings.
Sky's chief correspondent Stuart Ramsay has seen this mayhem up close. He explains how political chaos, social unrest and natural disasters have led the country to breaking point.

Barbercue is pretty lucky to be a gang leader in this era; 10-15 years ago in Haiti, once a gang leader become famous, your maximum life expectancy was a year to a year and a half. I've known several more powerful haitian gang leader who succumbed to their fate; had Barbercue been around as a gang member in 2004-2008, he would have been dead in a year.

I LOVE this country and the fact that we have always had the morality to help others. But today, American citizens are starving. Military veterans who made those pursuits possible are sleeping on the streets. We are robbing and raping and killing eachother. We are so politically divided that we are fighting in the streets. This country needs to tend to it's own wounds before inviting more people to come here. There comes a time when charity must be gin at home. Helping others is a beautiful idea, but helping your own is the BEST IDEA.

Jefferson refused to recognize Haitian independence, a policy to which U.S. Federalists also acquiesced. Although France recognized Haitian independence in 1825, Haitians would have to wait until 1862 for the United States to recognize Haiti's status as a sovereign, independent nation.

These ain't gangs these are the citizens of Haiti doing what they do. No foreign threat or invaders, no Whiteman to blame. It's what the first and longest black republic did with freedom. Blacks envision freedom as a do whatever one wants, and such freedom leads to slavery either by your own or others. Every side calls the other a gang. Every side is doing wrong wether out spite or for survival.

However, the United States is involved once again. I can't help but wonder which politician or corporation will profit from the misery of the Haitian people.

For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.
26The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.
27For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.
28And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.
