  • My Tribute to a person favorite, the caveman Howie Long. Hands down my favorite growing up (rocked the crew cut to prove it). Before the calf injury 1988 and other injuries slowed him down, he was a monster for the Raiders. Great against the run or pass, and played every position. Double teamed on virtually every play, made a lot of other Raider lineman look good. While his sack numbers won't blow you away, when you realize he would line up at nose tackle and was the only one getting double teams for the most part, you realize what a totally unselfish player he was. Which allowed other Raiders to flourish.
Named the 1985 Defensive Player of the Year, Selected to 8 Pro Bowls, named All-Pro 5 Times (3 First Team), named to the 1980's All Decade Team, helped a defense that tied the Bears for most sacks from 1983-1986 and obliterated the NFL's highest scoring team (at that time) in Superbowl XVIII, and enshrined in the NFL Hall of Fame in 2000. You see him on the NFL Fox Pre Game Shows.

I can personally attest to Howie's effect on women - in 1991 my wife and I were waiting for my brother after a MNF dame against the Raiders. I had my back the the tunnel where the players came out when I noticed every women in the parking lot whip their head around to watch Howie emerge from the tunnel. To close this out my old college coach, became the head coach of Howie's alma mater, Villanova. He retired as their winningest coach and they named a building after him - it has the Howie Long weight room in it. I really enjoyed this piece

The Autumn Wind by Steve Sabol
The Autumn Wind is a pirate
    Blustering in from sea,
With a rollicking song, he sweeps along,
    Swaggering boisterously.
    His face is weather beaten.
    He wears a hooded sash,
With a silver hat about his head,
    And a bristling black mustache.
He growls as he storms the country,
    A villain big and bold.
And the trees all shake and quiver and quake,
As he robs them of their gold.
The Autumn Wind is a raider,
    Pillaging just for fun.
He'll knock you 'round and upside down,
And laugh when he's conquered and won.

Only Reggie White & Bubba Smith can arguably be considered better than Howie Long! Howie Long is probably the best who ever played besides White and Smith! We went to a Raiders game in the mid-eighties when Billy Sims who won the Heisman Trophy was playing for the Lions. The Raiders won that game 6-3. The lions had second-and-goal from the 2-yard line and Howie Long made two of the most amazing plays I've ever seen in my life. Long was playing Left defensive end. Most teams are better running to their right. On both second and third down Howie Long beep double-teams, despite the fact that the Lions stacked their formation toward Howie's side, broke into the backfield and made tackles for losses on consecutive plays!Lions had to kick a field goal and the Raiders won that game partially because of Howie Long's 2 plays! Film clips reflect how awesome he was congratulations Howie Long!

Back when Al was still a defensive guru when it came to evaluating talent, some of those skills he picked up working the drafts with John Madden of course, but he used to sign juco no name and other organizations cast offs, all that mattered was whether they could play!

paul Zimmerman's comment about Howie Long is a precise example of why I don't waste time following "experts" or "mock drafts". nearly all of the so called experts (in any sport) are jokes. the only decent ones are ones that played the game and many times, they have no clue what they are talking about.
it always saddens me when people mention the Raider Mystique. when Howie Long joined the Raiders, Al Davis had made the mistake that would begin the crumbling of the Mystique. doubt it? it has been 36 years since the Raiders won a Super Bowl and have only appeared in 1 since.
Los Angeles ate away at the Mystique that was built in Oakland, Al Davis did the rest by turning on his best player in the 80's, Marcus Allen, as well as other decisions. the greatness he built in the 60's and maintined in the 70's was eaten away in the 80's. yes the early 90's saw some success, and the turn of the century was a very good team, but that fabled Raider Mystique is long gone. who would ever equate "The Autumn Wind" with any Raider team since the last Super Bowl champions of Long, Alzado, Allen, Plunkett, Christensen, Hayes and that last true Raider team?

that Zimmerman is the one that once said that Snake Stabler should not be in the Hall of Fame.......
yeah he knows lots about foot ball, right?
and you are right, that Mystique is lost, sadly (and I am not a Raider fan). Now they move to Vegas!!! even if they go back to win a super bowl will be weird to acknowledge the team as Las Vegas Raiders.

The “Raider Mystique”, and “The Autumn Wind” are just some stuff somebody “made up”. The reality is, football players are just football players, and they look for any edge they can get. When the Raiders were still the most successful franchise in the four major North American sports, the Silver and Black was, I’m sure, terrifying for other teams. The MAIN problem is that Al Davis started to believe his own bullshit, and thought that anything and everything he touched would turn to gold. He made Marcus Allen the target of his anger and animosity for YEARS, for god-knows-why, really. He became a feeble old man who couldn’t get the F out of his own way. Allowing Tampa Bay to just HAVE Gruden cost them a Super Bowl, and was just the final straw that proved that Al Davis was DONE as a serious owner.

Loved the old style NFL. No nonsense. They played the game like it should be played. Not like this crap we see today. Sadly, the Oakland Raider mystique is forever gone. Howie Long fit their agenda perfectly.

Played in a pick up basketball game against Howie at the Manhattan Beach, CA outdoors courts in late 1985 or early '86. Bill Walton with two of his sons (then very young) hung out there to watch games. Dave Wohl hogged a full court to play guys one on one half court on weekend mornings when was a coach with The Lakers. Played against Danny Schayes there too. But, Howie played with abandon. He would box out on defense, get the rebound and then dribble full court full speed without looking up and drove straight toward his team's basket and basically dared anyone to get in front of him. He'd try to lay it up and usually got fouled from the side or from behind. I thought he's risking his career playing full tilt on a hard tar surface, but apparently he never got hurt there. Played with abandon and was fearless. Stuck in my mind obviously.

No doubt about it! Howie Long was a dominant Defensive End! I still remember the Bears vs Raiders "84" game I think there was 6 QB's knocked out of the game & out of their minds! Howie Long was part of that destruction! Howie had the power, speed and was athletic enough to over power most NFL linemen trying to block him! He reminded me of The Great HOF'ER DE Doug Atkins

I believe his greatness is measured in disruption. He would destroy plays without getting a sack or tackle and therefore it can't be measured in statistics. He could play anywhere on the line and create a mismatch.
