BOB "BOOMER" BROWN | Raiders History

- (Jump to 2:13 for Raiders) My tribute to the most aggressive Offensive Tackle of all time. Along with Art Shell, Gene Upshaw, and Jim Otto, he was one of four (FOUR!) Hall of Famers on the offensive line for the Oakland Raiders from 1971-1973. One of the first 300 pound offensive lineman and standing at 6'4", Brown looked huge in his over-sized shoulder pads but was surprisingly quick. He he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.6 seconds at his first Eagles Training Camp. He had 20-inch biceps and 33-inch thighs, and his chest expanded to 57 inches. He polished his footwork by skipping rope and he trained five hours a day in the off-season. He was also one of the first players to seriously lift weights. In 1966 his military press was within 10 pounds of the record in the USA. Brown earned the nickname "Boomer" from the sound it made when he hit his opponent. A knee injury suffered in 1967 bothered him the rest of his career. With today's medicine, Bob Brown would have played a lot longer, but he still earned All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors despite the bad knee..
From playing with the aggression of a defensive player to having a Master's Degree, from his plaster cast forearm pads to his demands to be paid like a franchise QB, from his shattering the goalpost with a forearm shiver without pads on to reversing the screws in his helmet to counter Deacon Jones' head slap, Bob Brown was truly one of a kind. A 5 time first team All Pro and named to 6 Pro Bowls. Named to the NFL All 1960's team and was enshrined in the Hall of Fame in 2004. His #64 was retired by Nebraska and he was named NFL Lineman of the Year 3 times.
His style of play in his own words: “I’m not a finesse lineman like a lot of tackles in this league,” explained Brown. “There’s nothing fancy about me. I’m about as fancy as a sixteen-pound sledge hammer. I’m basic.”

And you wouldn't have that great Raider's O line of the 70's if not for the great Chief's D line of the 60's.

Bob Brown was big and mean, but at the end of the day, it's about the footwork, and he had superb footwork.
And that punch!
@@garysouza95 You gotta be there to deliver it.
Yep.
You notice how even when he was forming the pocket, he was always the one to initiate contact. He didn’t wait for the d to get to him, he would plant his foot at the last second and lay a hit. Beautiful display of football
Yep, but 78' pass rule should allow them to take advantage of that now, instead setting up back a yard. Dont make sense. But indeed.
I don't like the way OL ans DL play is now. It's not football. I don't know what it is.
The Raiders of the 70's was there greatest decade. He was an awesome member of that era of Oakland Raiders football.
I read that after Bob Brown broke that wooden goal post with a forearm in training camp, John Madden left it that way as a "Welcome to the NFL moment" for rookies!

By far the early 70s raider line is the greatest of all time and it's not even close.
@Keith nunya they were a good one.....still not even close.

@Feathers and Arrows Fez and Turbans Hogs are close but I'm not sure that Raiders line isn't a bit better, and I say this as a huge Redskins and Hogs fan who watched them play in their prime.

He always does initiated contact.perfect
I was old enough to have had the pleasure of watching him play hell for that matter I've seen all of them play! Back when football was football these guys were gladiators compared to today. They all respected each other and played like it. It's too much money and "only me" in today's game. We need that old school toughness and grit back.
Playing in the trenches as an O-lineman is a very under appreciated position.
Very rarely do you get substituted out.
If you had a good defence, that meant you had more playing time as you would be on the pitch longer.
Every play you knew if you screwed up, you QB or RB could get hurt.
As a captain I told my fellow linemen, the fun part was that every defensive player was a target until the
play ended. You always had a man to hit. Unlike the defence which had to concentrate on the whoever had the ball!
It’s not they don’t make guys like this anymore , it’s more like the league don’t allowed guys like this anymore , the NFL gotten soft and every one that grew up in the early 70s to the late 90s knows what I’m talking about .
Yep. Waaaaayyy better back in the day. Total different feeling
Hmm, evertime a hard hit is made, a penalty flag is thrown for something

Just gonna point out Bob Brown would be small for an offensive lineman now but I won't keep you from your fantasies.
@Clifford Driver I'm 40. I've seen enough. You could've googled "average nfl O lineman weight" and saw for yourself that Bob Brown is 40lbs lighter than a modern O lineman. Enjoy your fantasy.

The stories of Bob Brown with the Oakland Raiders are legendary.
And I'm talking off the field.
Bob loved his guns. Not his big arms. Guns as in Colt, S&W...etc. That's why he was called "Boomer". He was always firing off rounds, at the motel and the bars they frequented which drove Madden nuts.
So one story goes that while still in training camp his first year in Oakland, George Atkinson would always tell Bob(the new guy)to get him a beer or something to eat till one night the door opens to George's room and Bob empties the clip of one if his guns into the bed George is sleeping but aiming not to hit him. After he's done he says to George, next time you'll think twice about making me your slave! Which George says he never did again😂
There will never ever be another team like the 1970s Oakland Raiders. Which is why I feel so blessed to have been around then to see it.
I don't know really much about football, I'm from Spain, but I feel more atracted to this kind of sports than the ones we have; and I feel the old times where more real...anyone else?
Rest in peace legend!!! 🙏🏽❤️ what a video to honor him

"Traded to Los Angeles to do his dirty work for the Rams" and that was a compliment to a player back then.
Keep in mind, this is before OL could use their hands to shove, punch and hold legally while essentially remaining immobile. You had to be quick on your feet,be able to move and run to get out in front of Defenders.

Huge monster of a man. I wish there would be more film footage of when he went up against Denver's Rich "Tombstone" Jackson, if you watch the video about Jackson Lyle Alzado talked on there about how "Bob Brown didn't last 3 quarters with Rich", said he got the better of him one game; don't know if that was accurate or not but that must've been a classic battle between two monster players!
He had bad knees the last few years of his career. Tombstone Jackson should be in the hall of fame.
I remember Bob Brown. Deacon Jones tried his head slap on Bob Brown. Bob Brown told him don’t do that again. Deacon Jones did it again and so Bob BROWN took a screw on his helmet and filed it to a point and so next time Deacon Jones tried to head slap him he got his hand impaled on this sharpened screw on Bob Brown’s helmet. This was very interesting. The only time I had ever heard of him was Carl Eller talking about the greatest moment of his career. In the 1969 Western Conference Championship Game, he was playing against Brown whom he gave many superlatives to. In the 4th quarter, he got past Brown to record a safety on the Rams QB, the Vikings final points in a 23-20 win.

When you max out your fighters arm size in create a character.
He was the only linemen who when pass blocking attacked instead of dropping back. Vicious. He was a mountain at about 6'4 285. Would loved to see him play against 6'9 290 "Big Cat" Ernie Ladd back then. Sadly, both had the same fate with bad knees.
What would be his playing weight today? 320-330? Or would you have him, say, at center at 300 or so to preserve his quickness? Or guard. Larry Allen class.
