THE HITMAN | George Atkinson | Raiders History
My tribute to the 5'10", 180 pound rattle snake named George Atkinson who played for the Raiders from 1968-1977. Starting as a corner before moving to Strong Safety, he was easily outsized by about 3 inches and 50 lbs from most Tight Ends in his era . In his division alone Atkinson would meet the Broncos 6'4" 235 lb Tight End Riley Odoms and the Chief's 6'10" 255 lb TE Morris Stroud twice a year. While yes, the Raiders were always an aggressive team and yes, the Raiders reveled in their ominous image, George Atkinson takes it to a whole other level.
Along with "The Assassin" Jack Tatum, "Dr. Death" Skip Thomas, and "The Godfather Of Bump And Run" Willie Brown, they formed one of the most intimidating secondary's in all of football. They finally got their recognition when their style of play was highlighted in the Raiders first Super Bowl win in 1976.
The two things I respect most after making this video was for one, yes, he most certainly would throw cheap shots out there but he would do it right in your own bench area with no fear. Tackle you out of bounds into your own bench. Not a cheap shot by your own bench or when no one was looking. Atkinson robbed the bank in broad daylight. The other being he is gonna be at a size disadvantage every game but found a way to be a starter for a decade in the NFL.
There is much more research about the Atkinson v Noll trial in 1977. So many more people were involved. Mel Blount was going to retire when he was lumped into the "Criminal Element" which I never heard of before. The NFL being exposed for violence in the game was not good for business and this was the first of many Al Davis vs the NFL moments. www.thefootballodyssey.com/white-collar-football-1/atkinson-v-noll-the-criminal-element
My favorite quote was when Raiders QB Ken Stabler asked George Atkinson why he broke Russ Francis' nose. George replied "Well, he is 6'5' 230 lbs and I'm 5'11" 180 lbs and I just had to let him know that is how it was going to be today." Atkinson vs Francis got heated in the papers as well with Francis saying Atkinson was a tough football player and was not a dirty player...yep, they made men back then who didn't wine about things, just handled their business.

SERIAL KILLER | Anthony Smith | Raiders History
zhlédnutí 22KPřed 4 lety
Is Anthony Smith football's first serial killer? While there have been a handful of players who played for perhaps only a season of pro football who would later go on to commit murder, Anthony Smith is the first who had a long, successful football career and was also charged with multiple murders that involved kidnapping, torture, and murder. A first round pick by the Los Angeles Raiders in 199...
CAVEMAN | Howie Long | Raiders History

My Tribute to a person favorite, the caveman Howie Long. Hands down my favorite growing up (rocked the crew cut to prove it). Before the calf injury 1988 and other injuries slowed him down, he was a monster for the Raiders. Great against the run or pass, and played every position. Double teamed on virtually every play, made a lot of other Raider lineman look good. While his sack numbers won't b...

(Jump to 2:13 for Raiders) My tribute to the most aggressive Offensive Tackle of all time. Along with Art Shell, Gene Upshaw, and Jim Otto, he was one of four (FOUR!) Hall of Famers on the offensive line for the Oakland Raiders from 1971-1973. One of the first 300 pound offensive lineman and standing at 6'4", Brown looked huge in his over-sized shoulder pads but was surprisingly quick. He he ra...

My tribute to "Big" Ben Davidson. 3 time AFL-All Star (1966, 1967, 1968) and is the quintessential Oakland Raider renegade. Standing at 6'8" and weighing 275 lbs, was an intimidating sight for opposing QB's. Part of the "Eleven Angry Men" Defense that set the record for sacks in a season with 73. Davidson played for 3 other teams before joining the Oakland Raiders where he flourished and became...

No you haven't a clue about football or what you're talking about! Dirty players abounded in the NFL. Conrad Dobler was the dirtiest ever. There also were Bill Romanowski who spit in people's faces, Mel Blount who slammed people on their faces and used every single dirty move that George used and never forget Johnny Sample or all of the white guys who used to spit on Jim Brown and step on his legs and hands with cleats while he was down! You should be working at Walmart instead of making up lies on CZcams. 🤡

I got to see him in like 1972 when he came back to Husky stadium UW to play an alumni game and got his autograph as little kid going out on the field. He was always a hero of mine. Taping up the current owner of the raiders, that's great, look how he turned out, bit of a joke. Sad to see that Oakland would not give them a new stadium. wow I sure remember that old rivalry between the chiefs and the raiders, it was huge

Mine Too! Infact my HS football jersey was #75. I didn't get to wear it during pop warner because we were literally fighting for that number, as well as #77 (Alzado), #99 (Gastineau). So the Coach DeLuca setup "King of the Pit". All challengers and takes for a particular jersey numbers, you were going to have 'earn' it. It was the 80s! You could get away with that stuff back then. We were latchkey kids, we didn't have helicopter parents, and our dads' said, "if you want it, go fight for it." We weren't wussies back then either! I ended up with #68 throughout middle school. 🙁 But got my number #75 in HS, as well as starting D-End 3-out-of-4 years, and a spot on the All-Star team my Senior year.

As an additional comment, that Raider offensive line may have been the best ever. But, the Seventies Steelers were the better team!! Four Super Bowl wins to one. The Raiders still had a very difficult time moving the ball against that great defense. While the Oakland defense gave up too many rushing yards to Pittsburgh in those title games. They were by far the too best teams of that decade, though. Had it not been for the Steelers, the Raiders would have had three or more Lombardi trophies of their own.

It turns out every guy has an opponent that could eat his lunch!! For Bob Brown, that man was Rich "Tombstone" Jackson of the Denver Broncos. Jackson is another mystery man that belonged way higher on the all time lists than the stature he was granted. Lyle Alzado of the Raiders and Broncos said that "Bob couldn't last three quarters against Rich."" Knee problems of his own kept Jackson from true immortality.

John Matuszak was a class act. Led the Raiders to two Super Bowl 🏈 appearances. He retired after the strike shortened 1982 season and got into acting and personal appearances. He appeared in North Dallas 40 as a football player, and the movie was an exposé on the seamy side of professional football. Sadly, he passed away at the age of 37.
