    This video is 3 years old now. You should probably raise every price I say up 3 or 4 dollars. I think $15 is a great place to start your lessons at now. The ceiling seems to be around $30.

    As an italki teacher as well, I would say that the key is not to want to get more students but to retain them. Of course, you need to have students and create a base but don't focus on always getting NEW STUDENTS, focus on RETAINING YOUR ALREADY-GOOD-ENOUGH student base.

    • @MiguelJRiley

      Yes, and that's why she says it's important to keep your rate low when you begin.

    • @momonatu4998
      @momonatu4998 Před 4 lety +7

      @@MiguelJRiley It doesn't matter. It's quite obvious that a high rate stands for an experienced teacher. If you start too low you can't push the price at once because that would look really unprofessional and a low price doesn't pay off an experienced teacher. If you have zero lessons it's because you are new on the website not because you have zero experience.

    Tips and things important to me. I'm looking to gain a certain accent, so I'm looking for a teacher with a good accent I want to learn. I need to hear all of the syllables and sounds clearly, so I'm looking for a teacher with a good microphone and minimal background noise. A teacher with a good microphone is really, really important to me. I like a teacher who's pitch is in a medium range - not squeaky high and not too low. I like a teacher who can speak at a good volume throughout all sentences without trailing off at the end of words or a sentence. I like a teacher whose lips I can see when they talk, so while a mustache is fine for a male, it must be trimmed to see the lips. I like a teacher who speaks at a moderate steady speed relative to a natural native speed, perhaps slightly slower. I'm not a confident speaker, so I'm looking for a teacher who naturally speaks clear and slower so I don't feel intimidated. I speak at an advanced beginner level, so I do have a pretty good idea what I'm looking for. Listening to you speak, you seem to have all those traits, perhaps that's one reason you are becoming popular. These are things I would want for English lessons or from any other language. I like your video.

    Your video is very good and you are clear about the instructions. You said to be available to teach 8 to 12h a day. Even if you had all your time to Italki 12h is too much. I wonder if I say 6h they will reject me because they may consider insufficent. I´d like to know if you have a tip for someone who has a 15-year-experience, but no hours taught on Italki. Another thing that dragged my attention is the video shooting which is so important for the website and seems that Italki prefers those who shoot a pro video. I´m really very surprised because this is the first website for teachers that has so many written and visual instructions.

      Congrats! 5 students in your first week means you are off to a great start! I’m not sure about the placement exam. As a native speaker, I never considered it. I feel like it won’t add much credibility to your profile because students already trust that the teachers are all Native or C2 level speakers.

      Lower your price at first built student base and then gradually increase your price

    • @martinsmartins7506
      @martinsmartins7506 Před 4 lety

      Put the lower price possible, make a nice video introduction, if you speak more languages, show them, it will be nice for people from these countries or who speaks these languages. Your profile needs to be clean, don't write " well, When I was a young kid, I went to ... School, there I met Jones, my first friend... " The students don't want to listen irrelevant things, but, if you learned a language, tell something like "I learned ... For almost ... Of time and I discovered out some tips to learn faster and improve my accent and pronounciation, and I will show that on my lessons ". That is good for who wants to learn. Make differences between the begginers and advanced on your language, like: if you are begginer we can talk slower and improve your vocabulary, giving to you a good and solid foundation, if you are advanced....
      That is it, as I student, I search for the cheapers, and then, I search for who looks cool. But I do that because I know a lot of english, so I don't need some kind of genius teacher to help me, I just need someone to talk, and, the most money saved, more lessons I buy.

    A comment about $10 an hour from an American 🇺🇸 language teacher in Taiwan 🇹🇼. When I taught for VIPKID, I was paid well, but the PRC government stopped letting us teach after 9:00 🕘 PM. I then taught for English Ninjas 🥷 for $10 USD/hour until they reduced our wages horrifically and otherwise became goofy. 2 hours a night with nice Taiwanese regular students was really easy money and it really added up!

I have been told that my level of English is fluent and my writting is very advanced, especially since I managed to reach this level within 3 years of being in school here in UK, so do you think I could I apply to become a proper Pro teacher for English and perphaps be a community tutor for Greek, maybe a proffesional teacher for the begginers who wish to learn Greek. To be a teacher you need an equivalent of Proficiency level qualification in Europe but I think the English I learned in school in Uk is far more advanced than that. What do you suggest? Thank you.

I do use my phone during lessons to check my Chinese or Spanish dictionary when my students don't know a word. :)

    How did you learn Chinese? I really need to learn Mandarin. I plan to go to Hong Kong with my husband in the fall.

      Thanks for watching! I learned Chinese by several methods: self study, italki lessons, ChinesePod episodes, and immersion in China. If you’re going to Hong Kong, you need to learn Cantonese not Mandarin. But if you’re only going for vacation, you can survive with English! I visited Hong Kong before I spoke any Chinese and I had a great time! It’s always useful to learn “thank you” in the country’s language! :)

      Hong Kongers speak cantonese mostly, mandarin is their second or third language. If you want to practice your mandarin go to Beijing, Qingdao, Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, etc.

    I recently became a community tutor on there. Are you feeling pressured from students wanting free lessons? I am becoming stressed/agitated by people on there that only want free lessons from me and they become frustrated with me when i tell them i don't offer free lessons. I also feel like people on there get impatient when you don't respond to their private message immediately.

    • @joanloveslanguages5914
      @joanloveslanguages5914  Před 6 lety +2

      Sometimes I get people asking for free lessons, but I kind of just ignore those messages and reply with "If you'd like to discuss your language learning goals, please book a trial lesson." Make sure you have messages from people seeking language partners turned off in your settings. Good luck!
