      Our OES is super chill. Very calm for the most part. She does get a little barky when excited.
      And very very attached to her people. She’s 2 and never runs off from her people like our last high energy dog (catahoula leopard dog). She has to be wherever we are.
      But her coat does take daily brushing and regular trimming of paws and bottom. We trim her down a couple times a year to stay cooler... and have less brushing.

      Are they really as stubborn as people claim?

    • @marenjones6665
      @marenjones6665 Před 2 měsíci

      @Nil-tz6gy They're not as eager-to-please as a lot of other herding breeds, but they're definitely not stubborn like a bloodhound or beagle. They tend to be very smart and very patient, and they like to take a bit to figure out new things, rather than charging in or running away immediately. This might be because they can't see much, on account of the fluf.
      Consider the blanket test, what was, for a long time, the standard test for doggie intelligence. You throw a blanket over a dog, and see how long it takes for them to pull it off. Most dogs try to pull the blanket off right away, but an OES probably won't. They might look around a bit, try to figure out what is going on, listen to the humans laughing at them, and so on, before trying to escape. Or, if they're not bothered, they may just lay there, because it really isn't that much heavier than their natural coat. They may even realize that this is funny and start playing. There's a lot of variety in their personality.

    I had an O E Sheepdog during my 20's and she was a wonderful companion. I used nothing but a steel comb for grooming her, and it was a lot of work, but she was beautiful when finished. A lot of summers I had she shaved down like Roxy because it's so hot and humid where I live.

    I grew up with an old English sheepdog. She was my big sister ! She was so calm and protective ! even with our cat, my guinea pig and the other children of the neighborhood. Everybody in the street knew that we were in security when the dog was here, especially the small children. A living loving soft toy (so fluffy !) with a golden heart. Perfect bread for family with children and others pets or animal.🥰

    Question: when you're in the unfortunate situation that a dog is so matted they need shaving, do you communicate to the owners how to better care for their dogs coat and how to avoid such matting in the future? If so, how?! Roxie looks so tidy and such a sweet girl ✨

    • @littlecatfeet9064
      @littlecatfeet9064 Před 2 lety +44

      Hard question. Maybe share this channel with them as a great channel for dog lovers and hope they take a hint? Or casually mention that you’ve seen an article or video about matting and how to deal with it. Many dog owners love their dogs more than they know how to care for them, and a gentle suggestion goes farther than criticism. Good luck. Sounds like the dog is lucky you care for her and notice.

      So I’m a certified vet assistant and when vets have a dog that comes in looking rather…not well we can’t do much. We have to try and put the pieces together with what the owner says, we give them options to choose from on how they want to tackle whatever their animal is suffering with. I know this may not be exactly what a groomer does but it’s a bit similar (I would think), they’re not OUR dogs so we can’t force anyone into doing anything.

    This makes me think of another Old English Sheepdog, immortalized by The Beatles in their song "Martha My Dear". Martha was Paul McCartney's family dog for many years & can be seen in quite a few photos from those halcyon days. She was obviously a very good girl & deserved being the much loved subject of a famous song.

      In the 80s, Paul McCartney released a live album called "Paul Is Live" and on the cover was Ace, a relative of Martha's. In the 90s, when the three surviving members of the Beatles reunited create new music, the image of a running Old English Sheepdog appear in the music video of "Free As A Bird".

    I had an Old English sheepdog, she passed away 2 years ago at the age of 13 years old. The whole family still miss her every single day. And all that was said in the video is true. Best breed ever, amazing with children, and the separation anxiety was real! She was with me 24/7, unless I had to go for a trip. She knew all her commands in 3 languages: french, english and sing language. And that is actually how we found out during the last year that she became deaf. After she passed a friend got me a painting saying: Everyone has a guardian angel, but the lucky one have a bobtail!

    She reminds me of a pair of them when I was a kid. Every spring they'd be shaved down, the hair would be kept thin/short until near the end of summer when the owners let it grow again. Their idea was that it was good for them so they'd be warm in winter and not too warm in summer. No idea if that's true, but it was my introduction to the fact that there was such a thing as a dog groomer :)
    She's adorable and looks like a puppy at the end!
