Girl With The Dogs pet parent course coming soon!
😲 Sounds awesome!!!
Dear Vanessa, I'd love it if you did a nail clipping video in close up for all different sized dogs and different nail types. It's the one thing I really struggle with now, always having had giant breeds till my latest tiny rescue. Many Thanks for all the work you put in to educate us all 💖 💐
Thank you for posting this one. I have a Shichon that I have had to groom at home, due to a spinal injury. He is good, but grooming is very hard on him as he doesn't stand for long periods of time. I let him let on a towel on my bed and we just take our time. His ears and face are a bit of a struggle. I had to use the clippers, because he wiggles too much for scissors. This was a great visual to add onto that.
I love this and you so much!!!!

"Tell me about it, I've been working on it all year." -Me
We have to wait a whole week for another video? Bummer xd
What a well behaved old lady, hope she feels nice with all that hair gone in the summer heat.
Looks good

How is she an old lady??
@@melaniekendall4903 the dog is 11 years old
My Shihtzu is twelve and an absolute nutcase! I’m so glad they have such long lifespans.
I love it when you explain why you managed dogs differently. Knowing this dog has some special needs and how you have adjusted her care is just fascinating
jbw7705 she doesn't have special needs she is just skinny and has a mold and old dog. Those are not special needs that's just age. Vanessa never mention any special needs
@daniellewoolley8607 would special requirements be acceptable to you?
@@heatherg2083🤭👍🏻

@@heatherg2083 I do understand why Danielle reacted to the term "special needs" because that label is used for those with physical or mental disabilities, even with humans.
Porsha was so well behaved and I loved how she perked up when you said “want some treats? Want to go for car ride”? Thanks Vanessa for being such an amazing groomer and for explaining the grooming process
Ecaxtly what I wanted to say!
Unless there was evidence to the contrary, I'd rather assume that the owners used their dog's name's correct spelling.
@@rosiefay7283I think the above commenter spelled it that way because of how it was pronounced in the video. Not saying the pronunciation was wrong (I wouldn’t know lol) but maybe they don’t know how the car name is spelled or assumed based on how it was said. 😊
I had a Maltese X Russell cross I named Portia after a Shakespearian heroine & everyone thought it was after the car 🙄
@@AthyDuGardLOL Porsche
I had a Shih Tzu named Timmy who lived to 18. We would give him the same haircut. As soon as he came home he would run to our backyard fence and strike a pose to model for our neighbors dog 😂
That's adorable.
Did your neighbours dog find him charming and handsome? 😊
😂
They ran back and forth strutting their stuff 😂 He did it every time after a haircut.
Lol that's awesome. Timmy was all hey hey hey
What a sweet and patient little dog. She does not seem to be that enthusiastic about grooming but bares with it and looks so lovely when the grooming is complete❣

Such a good lady. She was trembling all the time, but didn’t utter even one word of objection. I wonder what she was thinking? ❣️
Probably thinking she wants her hair back!!
I always wondered if dogs think in barks or pictures😂😂
She's probably thinking she can't wait to go home, and knows that the less she moves, the quicker it will be 😂
@@nicolaxoxo1 the shaking is just a stress thing. my dogs all tremble when i'm cutting their hair but as soon as they're back on the ground they're fine.
As a Shih Tzu rescue dog owner, I just have to say that I so appreciate the care you take when shaving sweet Portia knowing that she's a skinny girl with thin skin. Sadie Grace was shaved a few months ago because she unfortunately got a wee bit matted over the winter months despite my daily brushing. Love the tips you give to help prevent cuts and injuries. What a wonderful outcome for Portia! She looks beautiful!!!! 🤗💖
Such kind comments 😀🐶🇦🇺
Awww nice to see our fellow shih tzu mom here ❤️ kisses to sadie grace!
I'm in the Shih Tzu rescue club too! Mine is now 11 but everyone thinks he is younger, He could never go that long without a groom!
You must have missed a few spots when brushing her! Wherever she got matted that time, make sure to give those spots extra attention when brushing that way you can Make sure to get everywhere thoroughly from here on out so you don't miss the same spots & cause her to get matted again❤❤❤
Pretty sure it's spelled Porsche, like the car.
Oh my grandparents had a Shih Tzu forever that lived to be like twenty years old. She always seemed like a thick STURDY girl until she went to the groomer and came back a skinny little thing without all that fur. Seemed like a totally different dog each time 😂
same my sis would trim her friends dog when she lived in New mexico it was a shih tzu irish setter mixed an it look like a completely different dog when it was dog..
20 years!! It’s amazing how long the smaller breeds can live with the right care. My Finnish lapphund was laughably tiny under his thick coat. We had to shave him down due to medical issues one time and he looked like a little lamb 😂 I miss him so much.
@@FilippaSkog well we know that my grandparents got her a couple years before 2001 and then she died sometime in 2019-2021 I can’t remember exactly so somewhere around 20 years. Poor thing could hardly walk, see, or heat but my grandparents were in denial about it.
Same here! We have this same dog, but in black. He gets a groom when he starts to look like a mop 😂 Everytime, I think he's gained weight, but he always comes back just as skinny as ever 😊
My George was a shih Tzu lab mix. We would bring him to the groomer as a giant shih Tzu and would get back a stumpy little lab
Behind a "simple trim" goes really a lot of thought and caution. I was underestimating the amount of care you need to put into a job to do it properly. Kudos to you and to your attention to your furry clients.
I recently trimmed my sister's 2 year old shih tzu and it was very hard to keep her from moving, so we managed over the course of a few days. To my surprise, she kept asking for more after she'd had a few hours' reprieve! I think she likes feeling brave and getting praise tbh.
Oh, Portia is so freaking adorable! And really well behaved too.
Such a sweet old girl. You could tell every time the clippers got near an itchy spot because she would lean in.
I never realized how much knowledge it takes to groom a doggy. You are extremely talented and kind !
Love that you emphasize feeling the heat of the blade , many dogs are burned because of this ! She did great 😊
some cordless dog clippers come with snap-on guards now. i use them on my older dog to protect her from the heat of the clippers as well as avoid nicking her skin.
I don't groom anymore, it's so nostalgic having someone gently teach proper grooming techniques and explaining them.
Wow, that was a very in-depth video! It made me realize you have to think A LOT while grooming (pull the skin here, push the ear there). You really cannot go into autopilot mode when you're grooming any animal, especially if they're not as cooperative as sweet Portia here! I would love to see a video on the blades you use and have a bit more information on them (what is a 10 blade, what do you use it for). I have no plan to groom animals, but I find the specifics very interesting! Thanks Vanessa!
To answer your blade question, a 10 blade is the shortest blade length that an animal can be fully shaved in (aside from what vets can do, I don’t know enough about that). It’s basically down to the skin and is considered the safest blade for sensitive areas. Sanitary trims, armpits and paw pad shaving are done in a 10 because it’s the safest with the least chance of catching the skin between the teeth though there’s always a risk involved. Sometimes paw pads can be done in a 30 which is even shorter. Dogs that are extremely matted on their body are usually done in a 10 as well because of how tight the mats are to the skin.
Grooming is very complicated and honestly very stressful because there is always a chance of injury even with the most calm dog.
@@b.r.v.8609ah, so interesting! Thank you.
This is why you see so many dogs injured during grooming at places like PetSmart with inexperienced “groomers”
What a little sweetheart. You can tell she's used to grooming even if she's not crazy about every part of it.
What a good pup! It's nice to see a smaller dog that hasn't been turned into a potato.
I'm so happy to see a video where you are explaining the steps, the reasons, the safety. I worked in a groom shop for a few months and along side groomers for years.
This little alien-looking dog has stolen my heart. What a doll.
Used to have a Lhasa Apso who looked similar, we got a very similar cut but we left her ears long. It was so cute, she looked adorable!
She seems so gentle and sweet! You take such tender care with all of your clients from the biggest clumsiest of moose-like dogs to the wild or resigned felines to the quiet little old sweethearts. Hopefully Portia's fresh cut helps that boo-boo on her back to heal with a quickness.
Beautifully said! 😊💗
As the owner of two Shih Tzu's this really makes me appreciate my groomer even more than I already do! I will never attempt this myself, but it is fascinating to watch you do it!!!
What a little sweetie. You can tell that she’s loved very much by the people she lives with.
I’ll say it again - Vanessa you are a godsend to so many - I’m sitting here in South Florida -WITHOUT a pet - but I love your videos!
This was a session jam packed with many important tips. Portia's final outcome was precious.❤
I love that you explain what you are doing, why, and with what. I also love that you explain the differences between what you'd do for a dog like Portia rather than a larger dog. It's really nice being able to listen to you explain and walk your viewers through what you're doin.
Portia was such a well behaved lady. She was so cute.🥰🥰🥰❤️
She’s so cute and she looks ready for summer after that spa day
What a sweet and well behaved lady she is!
She looks like a puppy again! Wow, what an insane transformation. 🥰
O!M!G! She is so adorable! Both before and after. What a sweet temperament!
The Grinch feet at 6:55 are too cute. I loved all the explanations on how to properly shave the dog and the reasons too. It was very interesting. You do a very good job. Thank you. And kisses to all the furbabies. 😻
She's adorable! Such a good girl. She may be nervous, but she obviously trusts you!
😍🐾🐾
I love that with every video you're basically teaching us how to properly take care of dogs and treat their fur 🤩
You’re seriously helping me become a better groomer. I have really gained a lot of confidence from your channel and my grooms have become exponentially better since subscribing. Thank you 😊
She’s the BEST behaved dog I’ve ever seen!!! Seriously- I wouldn’t be that calm!!!! ❤️
Shocked at how much hair came off those cute ears!!!!

Yup the irritated mole on the shoulder looks bothersome
@@tibo6749COULD be she just scratches it too.
I started watching your channel because a found a yorkie mix on the side of the freeway. He really needed grooming, and he had no chip, we never found an owner. We tried to have him groomed by our very good local groomer, but they cut it short because he was so frightened . So, i watched your channel with him sitting in my lap, giving him treats, so he could get used to the sounds of clippers. After a couple of weeks, we went and hung out at the local shop, in the waiting area, just to get a treat and see that the groomers were not Satan. Last week, he got a full groom, and he looks great, and i am now addicted to watching dogs get groomed.
She looks like a smaller version of our Chewie! So sweet.
What a absolutely sweetheart Portia is she was absolutely so well behaved in the bathtub and on the grooming table as well she is absolutely beautiful and Vanessa you did a absolutely amazing job on Portia and took good care of her knowing how thin she was and how her skin was as well I would like to take the time out to appreciate all the hard work that you put into grooming all these absolutely beautiful Dog's and Cat's as well and I would like to thank you from all the Dog's and Cat's that can't say it for themselves you are a fantastic person with a heart of gold 💛 and I would also like to thank your Cameraman for filming all these awesome videos as well he does a fantastic job as well...I hope you are keeping well and staying safe 🙏🙏 your channel is the best.
Grooming is so much more complex than I thought it was. This was a very interesting and helpful video. Thankyou!
You really explain, so clearly, professionally, and compassionately, your procedures within Porsche's grooming!
Your videos have been a godsend the last two days. My Aussie passed away yesterday morning and just watching you help these puppers has been a comfort through the tears 💔
Loved hearing the step by step explanations. She looks like a different dog now. Hopefully she enjoys the shorter hair
You babysitting a dog while also grooming another reminds me of when my sister and I would have to spend a couple hours at my mom's work. We always wanted to come out front and bug everyone and she would have to tell us to go back in the back room. lol
I also am finding it super interesting when you explain why you do different things on different animals. I don't even have animals that require much grooming but it's still interesting.
Her body condition looks pretty good on film for an older dog. That's a plus. And, well behaved dogs are so much easier to give great care.
Nice tip about trimming the spinal area, I'll remember that!
11 isn’t that old for a shih tzu. They can live til they’re like 16, 17, 18 years old.
@@parryyotter I've been a veterinary technician for about 40 years, and I haven't seen very many at 17 or 18. Just saying.
What a sweet little girl! So well behaved!❤
Portia is such a beautifully behaved dog. She reminds me very much of a Peekapoo we had many years ago named Trudy. She made me smile when you called her name. Thanks.
Hairdressing background? Not much of a surprise. Clearly you prefer doing dogs.
What a precious little lady! I really appreciate your videos where you take the time to explain why and how you do things a certain way.
As a business owner and hard worker, I'm glad to hear you have a Fluff-Off Karen bandana. Portia looks more like a Lhasa than a Shih-Tzu. My wife had three Lhasa's over time and shaved them all, never knew if we got the same dog back from those terrible "groomers". Ha ha.
I really like that fluff off banda too! I need to get one for my Chihuahua and Chinese Crested mix especially because my name is Karen. 😂
Lmao what
I think you're right. She looks more like a Lhasa Apso to me too. She's lovely 🐕
Nahh, 100% looks like a Shih-Tzu! I've had a few pure breds over the years and they have an unmistakable look, Even though they share genes with the Lhasa and Pekinese (it's where they came from originally). Soon as I saw her she reminded me my susie.. Became a very old lady herself passed away at 17 😥
If those are for sale, they will go like hot buns for service employees. God bless their souls and patience :)
Thanks for explaining the how's and why's of the cutting process. I've been grooming my 15 yr old poodle (mix?) for the last 4 years. I appreciate your very specific tips! Cute lil Portia!
What a sweet, adorable baby. 😍
Oh, just love that Frenchie! And Portia is just a splendid Grande Dame!
15:32 Her face when she said "do you want to go home" 😭😭 lol 😂
I really enjoyed the instructions accompanying this video, the little tip about that back foreleg section was particularly helpful. What a sweet older girl. Have a great week.
We used to do that for our dog, Ben. Roughly three grooms per year, about four months in between, timed to let him have short hair in the summer, as he did not like the heat, and grow out longer for the winter months.
Oh what a sweet cooperative baby!!! Thanks for showing how you shave the inside of the ears and trim around the outside. Love her!
Porsha is so cute! ❤❤It was fun to see her when all the floof was removed 😂 Look like a puppy 🙂
We have three Shih Tzu and we get them groomed every 10 weeks. We get them groomed exactly like you did little Porsche. She looks adorable! ❤️
I do enjoy watching you groom the dogs and loving how much they appreciate it! For such a little lady, she sure had a lot of fur. Portia, girl, you look marvelous.
What a sweet old girl! You treated her so very well, thank you for explaining everything ❤
I love this. I love the more informative side. Also that little dog did so good.
I love it when the dog underneath all the hair and floof is located....they're so cute!!
What a sweetheart she is! Thank you for the detailed information about the different issues. Love your channel ❤
I thoroughly enjoyed not only watching you make “a new dog” out of Portia/Porsche, but listening to your excellent explanations of what you were doing and why. If I didn’t live in the Pacific Northwest in WA state…I’d love to have our fur baby groomed by you. You are an excellent groomer and also an excellent teacher! Thank you!
Aww, such a cutie, especially at the end when you were saying her favorite words!
What a fantastic grand dame. Well behaved, and comfortable.

Thank you so much that was truly fascinating 😊 I was spellbound. I had never seen a dog with that much of a water-resistant coat it was if her coat had been treated to make it waterproof. I'm old, but I have learnt something today.❤👵
Wow! What a highly technical face cut ! Great job, what a great dog !
I just love how you love animals. What a friend to babysit and work with dogs at the same time.
I liked the detailed explanation of how you groomed this dog but, never having owned a pet that required taking it to a groomer, I'm confused by the some of the terminology - shavers vs clippers, blade types/numbers, & etc. Could you possibly do a video with a brief explanation of the electrical razors, shavers, trimmers, clippers, & so forth, what the blade number significance is, and what determines which tool you use when, please? I am not looking to be a groomer, but I don't always follow what you're describing because I don't know what you are saying.
You could say that the Flux capacitor was down so you have to use AC/DC current for the grinch feet today and I'd just have to nod & think, "OK, sounds legit." 😂
Thanks for all you do for the animals, and for the educational information you are providing.
Porche is adorable. What a sweet pup.
I absolutely love shih tzus. We adopted one four years ago and she changed our lives for the better. We are obsessed with her and I always love it when I catch a shih tzu (or shih tzu mix) on one of these grooming channels that I watch. They are the best lap dogs ever. She’s precious.
Bless her heart! I just wanted to scoop her up and love on her to stop her from shaking.
I adore the love and care you put into treating the cats and dogs in your salon! Well done! 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

I'm fighting back tears watching this utterly sweet & gentle little lady...What an emotional reminder of my own little, beloved, black Shih Tzu, named "Dolly"...She was a very tiny rescue puppy when she joined our family many, many years ago...She used to get up on the kitchen table, to lie down with our cats, & watch the birds, squirrels & deer out of the big picture window overlooking a large wooded property...Isn't it amazing how we still never forget our furry & feathered "family" even after they've been gone for many years...❤ BTW, your channel brings me so much pure happiness, & Vanessa, you're a real gem, just like Miss Portia...😊

I love that I haven't even got puppers, I just enjoy your videos! I have mobility issues, so wouldn't be able to give a pup the exercise they need. But I'm so glad I get to watch your content so I see beautiful pups getting treated with care and love ❤ Thank you Vanessa!
She is adorable ☺️
Does anyone else talk to the dog in their head as they watch these vids? I'm always like "It's ok, you're a good dog, it's ok. Don't worry, Vanessa won't hurt you. That's a good dog!"
Whew. Thank you for saying this.
Sweet little old girl. Her name suits her; she's obviously a lady. Thanks for the tip about shaving along the backbone. My cat Simon's backbone is rather prominent, though he's not underweight. But he's a shorthair, plus his back is just narrow, compared to the shape of some cats. I always worry about the Equigroomer scraping him too hard there. Stretching the skin will solve that problem! Thank you! I use a bristle brush on him too, but that's after the Equigroomer gets the major floof storm out of the way. 😆
That old girl was sweet and well behaved even though she was so anxious and unhappy! I hope she got all the treats!
She is just so adorable!
