  • Deputing foreign secretary Andrew Mitchell has hit out at Labour defector Natalie Elphicke after she denied claims that she tried to lobby the Justice Secretary over the trial of her sex offender ex-husband.
It comes after she was accused of trying to lobby the Justice Secretary over the trial of her sex offender ex-husband.
Mr Mitchell told LBC's Sunday with Lewis Goodall: "Traitors never sleep well, they are despised by their old party and they're never trusted by their old party.
"I would be very surprised indeed if anyone were to follow Natalie Elphicke who is already presenting very serious problems of principle for the leader of the Labour party who was a former Director of Public Prosecutions.
"If you look at what she's said, she's in opposition to almost everything the Labour party stands for."
Carol Vorderman provides her thoughts and analysis on the defection.

I’m with you Carol, I’m with Jess too… The whole” thing stinks. To BEAT anyone at ANYTHING you just need to be better. Starmer by falling to their levels and playing the same old, well worm political games has PROVEN what many of us have ALWAYS thought of him… A man who can show integrity and decency is FAR MORE LIKELY to carry people with him. Starmer has ZERO integrity, the man’s a FRAUD, it’s just MORE if the SAME and we REALLY deserve BETTER, particularly after 14 years of pure idiocy. Elphicke is a narcissist, quite possibly a true sociopath and Starmer would have been wise to “hold talks” and then out her at PMQs, letting EVERYONE know Labour are ABOVE such SH1TE.
It stinks, Starmer stinks IMO and for the first time in my life I shall have to hold my nose when giving my vote, I’d rather vote GREEN if they had the numbers to go forward. Starmer is taking the Polling Leads for granted, Taking US for granted (as the Local Election Muslim votes proved). He’s arrogant and although he will be PM he needs to be wiser and show a little more NOUS.

She is everything we have railed against for the last 14 years, her values and beliefs are in the sewer. What on earth was Starmer thinking? Deeply disappointing and so angry that this idiotic move has left me pondering where to place my vote. Of course the idiots will say" so you want a tory government then?" Erm, no, I will die an old woman having never ever voted for a tory, BUT, I won't vote for a party that dredges up the bottom feeders from the tory benches either, to sit on Labour benches! Elphicke is rotten to the core, simple as that and it doesn't sit well at all. This stunt to get one over on Sunak is short-sighted and a massive own goal.

I think it a huge mistake if anyone judges the Labour Party and Keir Starmer over this. Even bigger mistake to not vote Labour because of this.
There is no doubt that Elphicke has espoused completely unacceptable views which make her unfitting to have any impact whatsoever on Labour Policy.
Luckily, or rather more likely by intention (Starmer’s, most likely) she cannot do that. She is not standing at the next election and there is no way she can impact Labour policy - except in one area which is housing. In this area she has considerable experience and has views which have a huge overlap with Labour policy. She can be useful to Labour and on balance it may well have been a benefit overall to pursue that especially with the added benefit of creating more disarray for the Tories.
However that benefit can easily erode if people start saying that this proves Starmer is right wing and cannot be trusted. It’s nonsense. Maybe he is right wing, which I very much doubt, but this doesn’t even get close to proving it.
Tactical voting is the way forward whatever happens and I am grateful to you Carol for being such a champion for it. You vote for which party is best placed to get the Tory out. It’s that simple in this election. If you don’t, you help this party which has wreaked such havoc minimise damage.
If Starmer is as bad as some say he will not be as bad as these Tories. No way!
People say there’s no difference between Labour and Tory policy. Absolute garbage. I can list 20 policies really quickly that are hugely different from Tories and more if pressed. We could have Labour in power with LibDems as Opposition and a few Greens hopefully continuing Caroline Lucas’s impeccable example in Parliament. With Tories third and completely without influence. Isn’t that something to fight for? Let’s not get caught up in this non-issue as Elphicke can never influence Labour policy.
If Starmer is as bad as some on the far left say then there is going to be more chance to pressure him from the left with few Tories around with zero power.
