The Government you could argue is anti British
That is why Corbyn had to go. He was proposing taxing the super-rich more fairly.
There are as many cap wringers and forelock tuggers around now, as there ever has been
The general problem with rich people having more money is that less of it ends up in the economy. If a poor person gets money they spend it. That money goes it to rotation and get spent again and again and again and every time it gets taxed. When a rich person gets more money it usually just ends up on a bank account or likely in a foreign investment.
Giving rich people more money is a waste of money and bad for the economy.
I mean there are ways around this, increase capital gains tax, create a Luxury goods tax (LGT) so cars over 100 grand, jewelry over 25 grand, clothes, bags or shoes over a grand, have 10% tax on top. The price of the goods is why they are bought it's nothing about value so the extra 10% cost just make them more exclusive and will not put off buyers. Also introduce a Land value tax (LVT) this would mean you pay based on how much you own, so no more council tax unless you own the land, and you pay a % based on the value. This will also stop hedge funds and the like sitting on land and developments which could be developed into houses. Solving the housing crisis in this country as well as increasing the tax revenue!
@furie Brilliant economic thinking! Amazed you haven't had more likes!

And they buy big houses and several of them and are taxed on each one.
@@johnowen1677 no if the houses are not fully furnished, and if it is a big house you can just leave a room or two empty you don't pay council tax if you live elsewhere. If you leave the house to members of your family they would have to pay tax on it, however the work around is to put the deed in trust in the Cayman Islands, then it is a non taxable asset. This is what members of the government currently do to hide their net worth and pay less tax!
Sunak has just paid 23% tax on earnings of £2.2m- less as a percentage than a nurse
Yes but 23% of 2.2m is far more than 20% of a nurses wage. Should have gone to 'Mathssavers'.
Whys that matter? We should all pay the same %. If you earn millions you are clearing many ££££££s more than the average worker.

I think Charlie is referring to figures from the IFS which show "The 10% of income taxpayers with the largest incomes contribute over 60% of income tax receipts"
The problem is he thinks these figures are the full picture when they are not. They do not include the people who's incomes are subject to capital gains tax instead of income tax.
The richest people are not income tax payers!!
He moved the goalposts. To be in top 10%, you need to earn £66K, which is nice but not what we're talking about. Top 1% is approx £100k
Lower income groups use almost all of their salary on living, putting more money back into the economy, whereas higher groups salt them away in savings
I'm guessing that Charlie struggles a little understanding percentages and their effects also.
@@chrisj9700 The richest do not gain most of their wealth in the form of income. Consequently they tend to pay a smaller percentage of their overall yearly earning per year in tax than someone who gains mainly income. But their earning are so high that they still pay the majority of the tax paid, even at a smaller percentage.
@@chrisj9700 No mate. Income is not how they get their wealth. If it comes in a taxable form it will be a Capital gain as the tax is lower. We are not talking about doctors here.
@@chrisj9700 Nope. Just take Sunak as an example. His effective tax rate last year was 23% but his income was around 2.2 million. Why is he paying a lower tax rate than me? Because he got most of that from capital gains and the rest as dividends from his shareholdings. His job as PM is just a side hustle as far as earnings go.
Charlie is a prime example of why the country is in the state it is in.
So according to Charlie, Sir Alan Sugar paid an effective tax rate of under 17% of his income for that year, I'm sure all the PAYE basic taxpayers would appreciate a 3% cut in the basic rate. His assertion that the big companies pay all the tax had them rolling in the aisles. 😂

'Hold up' in the sense of 'this is a hold up, give me all the money'?
The top 10% of income tax payers are very different people to the top 10% richest in society.
Charlie's logic: rich people hold this country up with their money, and they have money because, because, because the rich people keep this country going with their money.
Carol: Who told you that?
Charlie: I'm telling *you* that.

Alan Sugar might have paid that much tax but was it the % he should have paid. That is the issue here. The caller can't grasp that.
We are given figures that make us believe that a % of someone's income is paid in tax. We all believe if any of us earn over a certain income, we will all pay a rate, or an increased rate. Extracting and hoarding wealth created by the working classes and then spending it to make the lives of said working class worse through political policy? Gee, ya think?
"Put taxes up and they'll leave!". Charles Dickens wrote about rich factory owners saying the same thing, and those empty threats have never come to pass. Tax the wealthy, and allow money to flow amongst the general population, as it did in the mid-late 20th century. This isn't "CoMuNizM"; it's sensible economics.
Rich people dont pay enough. businesses dont pay. enormous amounts not paid by the wealthiest. People have been lied to by people like Charlie. Charlie go back to school.
It is the definition of "rich people" that is how this particular con works. By lumping in a large proportion of the working/earning middle classes you can produce statistics that show "rich people" pay the majority of the tax. In reality anybody earning a salary is taxed according to the tax rules at a marginal rate of up to 60%. On the other hand if you are rich enough, and make money by investing money, you can keep your earnings offshore where they are not subject to the income tax system of the UK.
I agree you're not rich if your middle class you're lucky, for the moment.

Alan Martin Sugar started out with just £500 and access to floor-fulls of rich people. He sold dust-covers for keyboards and computer screens etc. However, it is to be remembered that £500 at that time was able to buy you 7 Mini Coopers. I am not at all sure I could turn over £100,000 in today’s money, into a successful business. All kudos to him, but like many success stories, he started out at quite a high entry-level. Even then, it took some luck or at least a ready-made market he had access to, via starting with associates of his father. His achievements are not to be sniffed at, many would’ve drank it away or smoked it or something. So he was willing to graft. I know some very hard-working young people, and my assessment is that 12-hour shifts, or 24/7 retailing making demands on your life, neither entitles you to buy a house nor afford rent for one. So graft alone won’t cut it now. Take care all.
