  • nVidia just launched the RTX 4070 and nobody is buying this GPU. What is the latest drama surrounding the 4070? Is this GPU that bad compared to the other GPUs in the RTX 40-series lineup. If you need a GPU, should you consider buying the 4070?

I must say I am really surprised that 4070 didn't sell out.
Though 600$ is simply too much for 'midrange' GPU class the past few years were so bad for GPUs that I have lost any believe that the PC HW market will ever get back to normal, but maybe just maybe Ngreedia went just too far pricewise and people are just sick of paying more every release.

Their strategy was clear from the start with the entire 4080 12GB disaster. They hoped that they could just increase the number by 1 tier and get everyone to overpay, setting a new standard for the future. It could have worked to be honest, but because the word "recession" is showing up again causing people to be a lot more critical. So in the end we didn't let them get away with it

the reality is that its a tier and a ti cause if you look at the numbers a 4070 is the same speed, problem with that is that the 1070 was 30% faster than a 980, 2070 was 20% faster than a 1080 and the 3070 was about 25% faster than the 2080, where is my 25% uplift over the 3080, hell id even take 15% this is why the 4070ti is the real 4070, 4080 being the real 4070/ti

Actually, if you look at what they've done here is segment the cards more. The 4090 is the 4k enthusiast card...the 4080 is meant for 4k. The 4070ti is meant to give you a taste of 4k but really meant to be upper tier 1440p with that vram and buswidth limitation (they were REALLY trying to get away with murder calling it a 4080) the 4070 is solidly placed for 1440p. the 4060ti and 4060 are meant only for 1080p with that 128 bit bus

Good video. My only slight disagreement would be the 4070 being a viable upgrade path for 2070 owners.
For me, if I'm going to spend $600+ on a GPU after 4 years, I'd want more than 12GB of VRAM. This is less memory than current gen consoles, and ultra-high settings in new games are starting to scrape 12GB of usage, even at 1440p.
Imagine dropping $600 on a brand new card, and already running out of video memory? An absolute deal-breaker, in my opinion.

The dollar is currently worth less than the Euro, but the MSRP for the RTX 4070 base models seems to be 659 € here in Germany when it should actually be under 600 €. Also, the 4070 OC models (like the Asus TUF as an example) cost friggin 800 to 900 €, which is insane. For 950 € you get the TUF 4070ti OC, which is still super expensive, but at least a little better when comparing it to a 4070 for 900 €. I think the 4070 would be way more appealing if they either give the same performance and 16gb vram for about 550$, or the same performance, same vram for 500$. I bet, then this gpus would have been sold out in a mather of hours, or at least a few days. But with the current price, performance and vram, its simply nothing to get hyped about. And preferable the proces i mentioned would be the aib models, not the founders.
/edit: It also would not have hurt to have slightly better performance, because a lot of people with 30 series cards would not really see any reason to upgrade,.. but if the vram would have been 16gb and the card would deliver at least 5 or 10% more performance, even 30 series owners would most likely sell of their 30 series gpus and get the 4070...
Its sad to see... I really dont know what nvidia is thinking, about their whole line up. It doesnt make sense at the slightest... except the 4090, and maybe the 4080 if you can get it about 100-150$ below msrp or with a good bungle offer when building a new system. The 4060 Ti and the 4060 will be competing directly with the used market. If they thought this was a flop, wait until they see the next two GPU releases. The 4070 was the last tier of new gen GPU models that they would have been able to carve a niche for and have something worth mass consumer sales, and it flopped. Everything below it unless it is dirt cheap, you are better off buying a used old gen GPU and saving tons of money. Nvidia knew this was coming and they thought their 600 dollar price tag was going to be a help to them. It's comical how bad this has gotten. Unless their goal is to sell out the remaining new 3070 stock before tanking prices, I have no idea what their plan was. Shareholders will not be okay with an entire generation of awful sales, and whether they fix that issue in this generation, or next generation, they will have to fix it. I thought this GPU would sell a lot better, but when you actually think about it, the 70 class GPU buyers are people who actually are concerned about value, whereas 70 Ti, 80, and 90 consumers are willing to spend more money and are less concerned with value. Being that the value accross the entire generation is awful, of course the most value centric tier was the largest flop.

I think it would be smart if techtubers would convey one aspect that no one really seems to focus on. What could make the 4070 decent cards for someone who may be on a lower tier PSU but want to be able to play at 1440p and take advantage of the production capabilities and utilize nvidia encoding and the production suite in general. The 4070 COULD be a better deal for them than some cards that, while being sold cheaper, may still require them to upgrade their PSU, where in some cases, the 4070 may not.
I had an RX 6700 XT bought it for msrp from the AMD site during the pandemic. It was great for gaming at 1440p more than fulfilled my gaming needs, however it constantly gave me issues with some production work, random driver crashes, and AMD's encoder did not like to play well with recording footage in 1440p. All said, if the card didn't get broke by super adorable fosters kittens I would just keep making do, but I need something pretty quick, and I would also like to upgrade my processor to either an i9-10900k or a 11900k. Which according to the psu calculators will run just fine on my 650w sfl psu.
Honestly, the power efficiency on the 4070 could just be my saving grace. Don't get me wrong, I'd be happier than a dog with two peckers if I could grab this card at $500, but the extra $100 was less than I was going to have to pay for a power supply that would actually fit in my case. Stupid small form factor needing original version of the Lian-li 011 mini. I am going to put my supernatural like patience powers into full effect, holding off to buy the 4070 for 4-5 months. Hoping for some good luck and for fortune to shine my way. But that is Nvidia... would I buy it for myself ? Absolutely not ! But I have 2 preteen sons, 11 and 13 in 6 and 8 weeks. The price of the 4080 is ridiculous. My sons say their 3060 is not enough... so an early birthday present is in order. (The Asus TUF with 3 fans was my choice for them... I hope it is enough)

I understood logic of Ngreedia. And now can't wait for the 7070 which will faster then 4070 by 2 times and will cost 2100$.

The v-ram scaling problem is making apparent these cards are simply not sufficiently future proof. Games right now are chewing 10gb of vram at 1440p with ease, and its only going to get worse in years to come. Sure, one can always scale down settings, but considering prices for these things are nuts, it seems like it pays to wait for next gen.

I'm getting it. I'm building my first gaming PC so I'm starting at 0, I don't care about 4k gaming but 1440p is perfect for me. I don't play graphic intensive games, and I like it's low power usage

My wife needs to upgrade her 1080, I doubt I'll be getting her a 4070 tho, I'll prolly wait for amd's low-mid range rdna3 cards to launch and make a decision then based on prices.

I guess I'll use my 4 year old RTX 2080 for another 2 years. And then I'll quit gaming for good, cause there is no way the RTX 5000 series will be worth buying either.

its not any different here in europe, with the 4070 costing around 670-680 euros yeah that aint selling out. thats 180 more euros than last xx70. that aint selling. also i bought my 2070 super for around 520 euros. which i found to be a lot. but i needed the extra for 1440p performance. i didnt see the value in getting a 3070 and i dont really see it in the 4070 either. why would i go from a xx70ti sorta class to a 70 non ti class. i would have bought the 4070ti if it didnt cost 900 bucks. maybe 600 euros but even that is a bit much to me. i dont think the next generation will improve at all. and also i dont think 12gb will be enough anymore either in the soon future. so my next gpu will be a 16gb card which will either be the 6950xt if it drops a bit more. or the 7800xt if it even releases at all.
i will pair it with a 3800xt tho as i dont see myself needing a cpu upgrade at all. and maybe sometime in the future ill switch to a 5800x3d

tbh it should have been priced 449-499 depending on model and should have had approx 5%better performance it would sold out,

I need to upgrade my PC because my GTX 960 4 GB is way to slow.
    I could afford a 350 € card including 19 % sale taxes. That's about 325 $ without taxes.
    I could buy a 3060 12 GB for about 295 $ plus taxes, but that's only 10 € below MSRP.
I think the 4060 will be priced at 350 $ to 380 $, but that's too much for me, especially with only 8 GB VRAM and about 33 % less Memory Bus Bandwidth.
And because I want to start with machine learning / deep learning, I need the CUDA cores. So other manufacturers aren't appealing either.
    No easy decision to make.
Whatever I do, it's gonna be a bad choice.

The only other thing that should be mentioned is that if you want a good card at the same level of performance as the 4070, then go buy a 6800 from AMD.

  • @urchinsify

One thing most GPU reviews don't take into account is how GPU prices remained relatively constant from 10 series up to 30 series.. 40 series is the first time Nvidia started to account for inflation. With that being said if you compare previous gens price to performance adjusted to current inflation values you'd get a very close price to performance comparison. Albeit a little bit worse but, but still closer than you'd think. I don't meant to sound like an Nvidia fanboi but take inflation into account and you'd have an answer why 4070 is 100 dollars more expensive than 3070.
$499 back in 2020 is $582 today.. Basically 4070 is roughly $17 more expensive than 3070 if you take inflation into consideration. Which you should.
It just feels more expensive because you don't buy GPU every month like some groceries so you don't feel that prices on everything costs more today than they did two years ago.

This is Nvidia's slow cooking the frog model, they will bump up the pricing tier for all their models but offer less than historical improvements for those tiers. Their excuse is Moore's law is dead.. so they pass the cost onto the consumer. Forget innovating or improving their architecture.. consumers will pay more for less, the Huang has spoken.
