Hey dude thanks for all the great reviews you do with laptops.
I just wanted to ask if you could throw in one more collection of averages. You get the data anyway. 1% lows. To me it looks like the difference may be significant enough to point it out when even though avg. is about the same it looks like the 1% lows were worse for the 4070. It's just one more chart to show for each resolution you show the avg. for.
Thanks again and always good stuff.
This is great because I'm not sure if I should get the 40 series or just go for a cheaper 30 series model of laptop but the 40 series laptops have advanced optimus and mini LED 1000+ nits screens.
Can we get a comparison between Rtx 4080 vs 4090 laptop gpu’s ?
Jarrod, could you do the 3070 vs 4060? Please?
Thank you for a great review, don't forget to include comparisons other than games, vray and blender
My conspiracy theory is that FG can easily be enabled on 30 series, but Nvidia only allows it for 40 series so they can make worse hardware and still sell it
Edit: not so crazy after all....
Technically, FG is much like motion interpolation on modern TVs....you can achieve very similar results, where the 60 FPS Output from as PS5 could be 120 and more....
Such features come with artefacts...maybe AMD will release a FSR update soon were also older GPUs from all manufacturers can use it.
I think so too because AMD will have FSR3
It'd be hilarious if AMD came out with something similar to FG in a new iteration of FSR.
@@bobanders6672 already announced, my guy.
oh wait.. 'According to AMD, FSR 3.0 will provide up to twice the frame rate as FSR 2.0, which seems to come exclusively from the Fluid Motion Frames technology. AMD hasn't shared any details on how this tech works, but the company confirmed that it is using frame generation similar to Nvidia's recently released DLSS 3.'
NVIDIA is expecting people treat DLSS 3 as ''real frame'', therefore 2x performance uplift.
We know its a joke, but good chunk of consumer will eat the PR up just fine.
exactly , the whole markting of the 40 series , is the dlss 3 , its like : yeah we give almost the same performance , but hey you have dlss 3 that make double fake fps and won't be available for the other cards
Sorry but what is "PR"?
I mean the current game I play doesn't even support DLSS 2. So, no performance uplift with the 4070.
@@carlostorresfuenzalida1528 public relations a.k.a marketting to consumer
Don't forget it's in like 5 games. Highly doubt existing games will get it and who's to say AMD won't release an open source one that runs on everything.
CPU temperatures and power requirements are still a major problem in laptops, even relatively beefy gaming laptops. A lower TGP for the graphics card means more power can be sent to the CPU. From personal experience, 70 and 80 series GPUs are typically more limited by the CPU performance in a laptop than anything else. Alleviating the thermal constraints on the system by allowing the GPU to get similar performance at a lower wattage makes a big difference in that regard.
Question, wouldn't the lower fps of the 4070 combined with wider power range improve the frame rate drop spread? Im under the impression that the 4070 is more finely tuned for consistent performance in rease as opposed to just more power but having less consistency. Which to many consumers, would be ah improvement.
Now we need 3060 vs 4060 immediately :(

@@BridgeTROLL777 embarrassment to claim a generational leap when they are selling the same performance for higher cost.
Embarrassment to unabashedly sell something that was very clearly designed to be a 4060 as a 4070 at a higher price than the 3070 sold at when production costs are likely a little lower.
They're just trying to get the market to accept covid/mining prices as normal.
When else have we seen in tech an actual regression in price to performance at launch msrp gen over gen? It's only the last few years and they're trying to get everyone to just be okay with it.
I bought a laptop with a 3070 2 years or so ago and if I spent the same money now it would only buy me a 4060, which extrapolating from what we see in this video would be a noticeable step down in performance.

Well when I saw it only has 8GB and 128 Bit I was very disappointed and wondered. Nvidia always does Nvidia things hoping buyers see the 4090 / 4080 performance and expect the 4070 to be not too far off as it used to be in the past. If they don't watch reviews there they go...
Nvidia sold us a 4060 as 4070 :) Actually they just moved up a tier in price without delivering. The 4090 -> 4080 and the 4080 -> 4070. The 4070 -> 4060 and the 4060 should be a 4050Ti. The 4050 can stay a 4050 if priced decend.
I was getting the feeing too. Nvidia basically shifted their tiers around
@@thefamilydog4115 Nvidia also must have known through OEMs or other sources that AMD is no competition this year.
If AMD (or Intel) would have had a half decent product for mobile they couldn't have done.
Yep, you hit the nail on the head, this should have been the 4060. At 3060 laptop pricing, not $2000.
Wait for the real budget RTX 4040 with 2 GB VRAM
It's a shame since this would be quite impressive 4060 class part, since you get roughly 3070ti performance + frame generation at around 70W vs 90W 3070ti.
Not bad for a 4060 lap... oh no, they renamed it as 4070 laptop and charge 2400 euros!
I think it can be summed up a lot by just saying "If you're buying a new laptop with the 40 series GPUs, you're buying them for the frame generation feature". Obviously the performance is going to be similar, therefor, if you're looking for a deal, get last years model. If you're looking for this years performance and are willing to pay the extra $ for the frame generation feature then there you go.

I'd love to see a productivity / benchmark comparison between those CPUs. I'm interested if the extra cache makes a big difference. Also wondering why so many more units seems to be paired with i9s in 13th gen laptops.
Probably even worse for creators, thats why we didn't see any test. Lower cuda and tensor cores and memory bandwidth so in blender and davinci resolve performance will be worst then rtx3000.
Jarrod a question, why did the Power Scaling graph at 1:40 only go up to 115W TGP when these are maximum 140W and 150W GPUs?
This GPU is codenamed AD106. The 106 class GPUs last gen were the 3060 and 3050. They're doing the same old trick again, this is a 60 class card with a 70 class name.
Edit: If you look up the AD106 it is the same chip found in the 4060 and 4050. This is probably just a highly binned AD106 aka a jumped up 4060.
The 4060 and 4050 are actually on AD107, which is even worse, so not even those will be good value... It sucks

Yup. They're selling 4060 as "4060", but it is in fact 4050ti due to 2500 cores vs 3000. 4070 tho is the real 4060 due to much more cores.
So Nvidia sells us 4060 which is in fact 4050ti and second, it sells 4070, which is on fact 4060. And 4070 vs 4060 branding is at least 100$ more

Great comparison! Very informative.
I recently purchased the G15 AE, and immediately started regretting it thinking I should have waited for the new 40 series laptops. However after looking at the performance of these new laptops for the price/ performance I am more than happy with my choice
Edit: I'm the UK so prices here are substantially more than the US
I did the same thing. A Ram upgrade, and an additional NVME, and I'm very happy with my discounted laptop.
Having bought a 4080 laptop, I didn't really do it for value or performance. I did it because budget wasn't too much of a concern and the newer 40 series laptops have the ability to be much quieter, and indeed, it is much quieter than all the laptops I tried in 2022. If noise is not a priority for you, 30 series is still plenty good.
I have the G15 AE and a scar 17 with a 3080 and sometime I feel the AE just looks so much better but with slightly less fps. I’m happy with both but do sometimes prefer the AE
Got the Lenovo legion 7i slim recently on sale and I’m very happy with it. Just upgraded the ssd. Thought I’d made a mistake but now I’m glad I chose to get it when I did. Mainly use it for work and playing D2R
I did the same thing but with the zephyrus g14 2022 model. I think the AMD gpus in these laptops with hold up better than we expected now since these are the results for the 40 series cards.
If the results on 4060 vs 3060 are going to be similar, where 4060 barely beats 3060 and needs DLSS 3 (which on it's own doesn't give too much of a difference) AND a frame generation to get a significant difference, I'm more than happy with my RTX3060 laptop :)

here in South East Asia, majority of distributors only supplied with RTX 3050 & 3050ti, which is a shame considering it only has 4gb vram... it is as if these laptop manufacturers want to juice out the RTX 3050 because of the cheaper component, but with "ray tracing" labelled in it. 4070 is really a 4060.
A desktop 4060, yes. The laptop has always been one tier down in specs and performance from the desktop naming scheme. 80->70, 70->60, etc. In fact, you can look at this and see the type of performance a desktop 4060 will have stock. Hey Jarrod, I got an acer nitro 5 with an i7 12650H, rtx 3070ti, 16GB DDR4 Single channel RAM, 1TB SSD Gen4, QHD Color accurate screen 165Hz at $890. Is it a good deal?
Thank you so much! Your videos are very useful! Will you do a comparison of all 4000 mobile series available soon? It would be necessary to observe the benefits from every tier (cost to performance)
2:30 I’m surprised you weren’t able to get the Legion 7 with the 3070ti and 12th gen HX. I bought one over the holidays and seeing this comparison I’m really glad with my purchase. I love the added unicorn vomit.
I have same and i get better performance than the legion 5 pro in the video.
@JarrodsTech which do you recomend for Data Science or Machine Learning? Or what are the optimum Laptop specs for both Data science and ML?
Great comparison! Thnx for this video
Glad you liked it!
I wondered if with their policy of 50% increase of power for 50% increase of price (so, same thing 2 years later), Nvidia would not end up with reviewers comparing a say 4060 to 3070 or 4070 to 3080 and saying it's the same thing at some point.
I was wrong. The 3070 Ti laptop is a 4070 laptop. Bravo Jensen.
Thank you so much! Been waiting for this video! So happy I picked up my Legion 5i pro with rtx 3070 ti last year on sale! Looks like it will be a great performer for awhile to come 😁
@Jarrods Tech Please make an updated video about the best budget cooling pads of the moment! (please and thank you)
When would the discounts happen in the UK?
I'm after the Pro 5/5i with 3070 Ti, lowest i've seen is £1600 and out of stock.
thank you so much for making this comparison! i recently bought a 3070ti laptop with a decent discount and was wondering if i did a mistake by not waiting for the new laptops to release. But it looks like there isnt really a performance difference and the 4070 seems to be a bit more expensive, so im really happy about that😅
Sad because now all the 3070ti are sold out TT
Yeah I just placed an order on mine, compared it to my buddies that he got at Best Buy. Literally no experience in gaming laptops but comes to find out I made a very great purchase. It’s deemed best 2022 gaming laptop
Did you buy hp omen 16, rtx 3070ti ,amd ryzen 7 6800H?
It was a big mistake
Hi, I am planing to buy a laptop next year and my options are 3070 ti , 3080 ti or 4070, but now i am confuced because 3070 ti and 4070 are almost same in performance and i dont know how much future proof is 30 series card laptops, what is your opinion on buying 30 series card laptop in 2024? Also will it be ok to go with the 3080ti laptop over the 4070?
So basically, the 4070 is just '3070Ti but with more features'. Though for me, I'd still probably go for the new laptops this year mainly because of the 16 10 screens. Now I hope Jarrod puts out the 3060 vs 4060 comparison next for us more midrange folks
It's worse than 3070ti imo. 128bit bus is like we see in a 1050ti. Games that are highly being dependent will suffer with 1% low dips and be a stuttery mess. There is a minimum FPS to uses does frame generation you can't make 30fps games buttery smooth by dlss3.
yeah this is slightly disingenuous because literally everything else is better too. its not the same as a desktop with a direct gpu drop in. these laptops aren’t identical.
The prices are however are a wild frontier .
I don't see how it's worth to be called as "having more features", aside from Frame Generation.
@@hadifelani Technically they do have AV1 encoding, if you happen to be one of the people that care about that. Most people don't though.
@@MrHamof exactly
I haven't been able to confirm what the wattage for the Samsung Galaxy Book3 Ultra's 4070 would be. Do you happen to know? Also, is there any chance you get to review it? I'm torn between that and the Asus Flow X16 with RTX 4070 (which I would imagine is much better in performance, but that's not necessarily all for me).
Great content. However, Other reviewers are observing that it is matching 3080 and 3080Ti, I am wondering if there is a specific problem with the tested unit. Cheers.
Jarod waiting for your legion pro 7i vs scar comparison (4080) , thermals
Yes, it's a joke in raw performance. . .
To get you to buy a 4080/4090 mobile GPU!
And they still perform worse than 4070 ti super😂😂
@@pravinsingh6198 which costs close to RTX 4080 desktop card in India, which will destroy any of these cards.
Would love a 4060 vs 4070 laptops as the price increase between the 2 is ll over the place.
Hi Jarrod, can you mention which pci mode was during testing (band and version)
I think it is really cool that the 40 series can use so few watts and, at the lower TGPs that they share with 30 series cards, produce more frames. I do like the power efficiency angle of these cards.
Seeing FG being gimped at 1440p is not a good sign.
Basically DLSS 3 = 💰 wall. Shame on you nVidia for selling us better software and not hardware on a shameless price
I bought my 3070 ti laptop 💻 thanks to Jarrod, best investment ever, unless they change the ram capacity it seems pointless to change to a newer laptop
Great and very informative video! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
I feel like we're only paying for frame generation this generation
dlss 4 = nvidia just adds 50 to the fps counter
Tech these days just isn’t changing that fast, just incremental improvements. Just goes to show you can keep your last gen gaming laptop and it will last well into the future before you need to upgrade.
That's because of the power limits on laptops
Desktop RTX 4090 saw the biggest performance boost in recent years
@@HeLithium happy to see someone else also just saw the video now
@@HeLithium yeah, because its the only gpu that they really cared about. The 4080 is also dissapointing in terms of perfomance compared to the 4090. The 4080 desktop is also just a 4070. The 3090 and 3080 shared gpu die, and now we have a 4080 thats similar in price to the 4090 and has a different die.
Would you consider upgrading from a legion 5 pro 3070 to the Alienware m16 4080 a good choice?
Is FG latent as well? Great for single player, but not advised for multiplayer? I think I'm sitting pretty on my 3070ti Legion pro
Actually the FPS per W graph tells pretty existing thing. Laptops like XPS 15-17, ThinkPads, and other non gaming specific laptops with 50 to 70W at GPU will be pretty close to previously thiker and heavier proper gaming laptops. Jump from 3060 to 4070 for XPS might bring more than 50% graphical performance to those machines.
Here I was sitting with my 3070 G15 wondering if I should spend the $$ to upgrade to a 4070. NOPE. Thanks for saving me the dough, Jarrod!
Ended up goin with a 3070ti Blade 14 since it was on sale for 34% off and I liked the balance between portability and power. Looks like I made the right gamble
I always skeptical when nvidia publish the specification of RTX 40 series laptop which most of them has less cuda cores compared to 30 series. I guess 4060 will have the same story since it only has 3072 versus 3840 on the RTX 3060
Super glad I jumped In and got a great deal on my 3070Ti Legion 7i and didn't wait now.
My CPU is 12800HX also which may give this 4070 an even better competition.
Yeah for like $1200 I’m interested. Otherwise I’ll wait and see if they panic an release a super or ti Version of the 4070 with 10gb vram and 160bit bus and closer to 5500-6000 cuda cores. My 4 year old 2060 laptop has a bigger memory bus, it’s ridiculous.
This is like bragging about how big your car's fuel tank is. It doesn't make the car faster unless you stop for gas.
@@CyberneticArgumentCreator More like engine size.
Apr 2023: cheapest laptops with 4070 I can see are 1500-1600. Not there :)
Thanks for your work! I recently bought a laptop with 3070 TI, and was checking, how it performs compared to 4070. Yeah, well, for my surprise they are almost the same. And I am happy to see it, that my laptop did not become a potato :)
Though it rise the question about GPU naming.
Amazing work JT!
Thanks a lot!
Jarrod's metal t-shirts appreciation🫡😹
Thank you for making videos like this, man. It is so good to know this. Please make more truthful comparisons and tell what is truly the best to get, as new overhyped and falsely marketed stuff comes out all the time. Cheers!
Thanks for sharing!
Struggling to make a decision for my first gaming laptop… 2023 strix g16 with the 4060 or a 2022 strix Scar 17 with the 3070 ti….
Both are priced similarly and can’t decide if I’ll notice a huge difference between the two??
Now consumers will be in dilemma if both laptop are under same price tag, hopefully 3070ti laptops go on sale and then it will a be good deal other than that this is disappointing.
how would it be a dilemma? if both are priced the same, go for the 4070 as it will most likely have updated CPU as well. That's a no brainer.
I like products that consume less electricity
I am thinking about getting a new Dell XPS 17 - the 4070 is limited to 45 and then 4080 ($350) more is limited to 60 - would you recommend these graphic cards with the limitations?
hi, shouldnt the 4nm chip cram in more CUDA cores in the same area relatively? why is performance same
3070ti has 27% more cuda cores than 4070.
3070ti has 256 Bit Mem Interface and 4070 only 128
3070ti has 488GB/s Mem Bandwidth and 4070 only 256GB/s
That results in same performance even though the architecture is better than the 4070.
Also higher resultions needs more bandwidth, thats why 3070ti takes the lead in 2k. In 4k it would a bit higher for the 3070ti.
U can see the same for the 4070Ti Desktop, which performances well in 1080p and 1440p but in 4k the performance drops a lot if you compare it with the 3090 or 3090Ti.
as someone that picked up a 4090 and are using it in a 8700k system until i do a new build, frame generation is pretty magical and you can't tell a difference unless you spin the camera fast.
I think the smart play here is to wait about a year and look at 40 series laptops again and see how much more DLSS3 is adapted. Also probably save a good chunk of cash too.
By then the laptops will have a refresh out probably called super again.
any 700 series intel are good and last very long time
Scummy marketing tactics.
Glad I got the 3070ti Legion (the one in video) for CAD 1600! Reassuring.
Extremely helpful video, thank you
upcoming Nvidia drivers patch will probably nerf 3070ti performance ;)
Thinking about retiring from gaming. The market is just far too depressing and other hobbies are looking rather good now.
You don't need the newest hardware to play games and I'd recommend checking out 30 series if you need a new laptop because they are becoming cheaper now.
Thanks for this! Really makes me feel good about getting last year's Legion 5i Pro at a really good discount.
Curious! Does cooling package make a difference here. Since cooling in XMG could be worse than lenovo!?
Thank you very very much for all these quality videos! You make our life a lot easier and we appreciate the hard work you put into making such quality videos! Keep up the good work man!
Thank you jarrod for releasing this video before release day tommorrow so many consumers wont fall for this "joke" of a product.
@Jarrod'sTech great video, I appreciate you giving us this comparison with the laptops that companies have given you, but if you ever get a 4070 with the 150w power limit that is equal to a 3070ti 150w power limit, could you compare those? 150w 3070 ti vs a 140w 4070 seems a little imbalanced
I don't really think 10w is much of a difference. If it was 110w vs 150w, I'd straight up call the video for being BS.
Just bought an MSI Vector GP66HX with 12800, 32g, and 3070ti on sale at Bestbuy for 1799.00. I'm blown away by the difference from my lenovoY540 with 1660ti. It's like everything is a new game. Getting used to a 15 6" screen is an adjustment from the 17" but it's not as noticeable as I thought it would be. I highly recommend it.
The main benefit is that the 4070 will perform great even in thin laptops and the laptop will be quiet while gaming. I had an Asus Vivobook Pro 16X OLED (N7601-NW) and the 3070Ti inside it performs much worse than my newer Vivovook Pro 16X with 4070 (K6604JI)!! Also the laptop was so loud, this newer laptop is so quiet while gaming, it is a completely different experience!! Like night and day!! So the 4070 is a boon for Multimedia laptops! This newer laptop weighs only 1900g, crazy that it performs so well. I could not be more impressed with the 4070!
The 4070 is definitely more comparable to the 3070, and I'll like a video on that, especially when I have a 3070
This video shows the laptop 4070 is identical in performance to the laptop 3070Ti, not the 3070.
@@CyberneticArgumentCreator I did watch the video, I meant more comparable as in there would be an actual difference, plus the 4070 is the next in line of xx70, not xx70ti
Jarrod, how or when does dynamic boost kick in. My 3080ti can boost to 175w but in games the max I've seen is 160w. And heat is no issues here.
One of the things that you have to consider, though, is that not everyone wants a big, sweaty gaming laptop with an 8 pound brick. I think the 4070 is still a good chip because a lot of form factors that would have never been able to host a 3070 Ti will be able to have a 4070. Don't be surprised if you start seeing business, mainstream, relatively portable laptops, fully USB-C powered laptops with 4070, like XPS class laptops. Sure, it won't be at max TDP, but not everything has to be max performance all the time, and those would have been laptops that had a 3060 last generation. Most reasonable users will not chase fps while running their fans at 50+ dB. But yes, of course, there will be a 4070 Ti next year.
