    I'm new to Cakewalk (all DAWs) and I happened to stumble across your channel. I'm really glad I did! I've learned two other ways to split the drums into separate tracks, but this is by far the easiest. This video is very well done. Clear and concise. I just hooked up my first MIDI controller yesterday, so anything you do on using controllers with Cakewalk would be great. Thanks much.

      Hey Mike. Congratulations on getting started with DAWs. Thank you for commenting and giving the video a watch.
      That’s great that you are using a controller. I have a new series that focuses on recording drums. One method deals with midi controller and virtual controller. Hopefully it helps.

    Let me know your thoughts on the video and series. What do you struggle with most?
    Part four will focus on using the virtual keyboard to record drums.
    I’m plan to make a series for each instrument category. Bass is up next.

    I did it that way 😀 by deleting...
    I right click and select but just hitting the keys is faster 👍
    I spend a long time getting fills and try to fit the notes..
    Also velocity seems quite important for the humanising 😊

    Do you have a video on recording using e drum kit without using a vst? I want to record my Roland td-17kvx kit into Cakewalk which I can do to a single midi track. What I want to do is split out the individual drum pieces into their own tracks. Thanks very much.

      @@JustDaNormThanks but I don't want to use a vst like SI drums. I just want to use the kits in the td-17kvx. And I want to have seperate tracks for kick, snare, toms, cymbals, etc. Roland has a list of values for the various drum pieces to use in creating a drum map but I go to the Cakewalk drum map manager and I'm just not sure what to do at that point.

    • @JustDaNorm
      @JustDaNorm  Před 2 měsíci

      @abc456f when you record midi you can use your Roland as the output. Then you can record the data and hear playback using internal sounds of Roland but as for as being to export it using those sounds you will have to record it in as audio.
      As for a drum mapping this video might help

      @JustDaNorm So I was able to create a drum map for my td-17kvx. Recorded a midi track. Then created an audio track named "Kick". Opened the piano roll view for the midi track and solo'd the kick drum. Set the "Kick" audio track to record and played back the solo'd midi track. Now I had an audio track with just the kick. I repeated this process for each drum piece so I ended up with multiple audio tracks with each drum piece on its own track. But what CANNOT be done is to record in real time the individual drum pieces to their own track. This can only be done one of two ways: 1. Record using a drum vst with mixer or, 2. Upgrade to td-27 or td-50 which have multitrack recording options.
      I sent an email to Roland support asking if they'd ever consider an upgrade to my kit, either free or paid, with this feature.
      In the process of all this I ran into another issue where the cymbal choke isn't being enabled in midi. Another mountain to climb. None of this stuff is ever easy. But thank you very much for replying, really appreciate it.

    If I open a new midi track my controller is set up nice but I don’t have any plugins that work with it, if I create an instrument track I can’t figure out how to set my midi as the input it don’t show properly. I got it straight from usb on the midi controller to the laptop usb, rather than using a midi out of my keyboard thing, and into my audio interface midi in, when I do the midi cable to audio interface I have trouble selecting it properly like I don’t know what to choose. It’s my first midi controller and so far I’m recording guitar amazing, I just don’t know drums so thought this way would be a start

      do i need to put my midi keyboard as surface in order for it to work?

    • @JustDaNorm
      @JustDaNorm  Před 2 lety +1

      Hello Maria, have you tried transposed your midi keyboard or lowering the octave. The drums will only work on certain keys within the lower octave. For example my Nektar usb controller only has 25 keys so in its natural octave position it doesn't play the drums so I have to drop it an octave. It all depends on what drums you are using. For SI Drums it should work.

    • @JustDaNorm
      @JustDaNorm  Před 2 lety +1

      you don't need to add it as a surface for it to work. Let me know if you continue to have trouble with it and I will think of other solutions.
