Worked a treat on a female lead vocal I had been struggling to make shine, thanks a lot Mike and also Warren Huart
Awesome! So glad to my hear this!
I want Mike floating in a blue bubble telling me recording tips 24/7.
Its a new meditation. ommmmm
Even when you're eating, or sleeping? I'd get sick of it. No offence, Mike!
I'd wish for a direct line to Mike whenever I click on 'help' đBetter yet, a voice-activation Mike that answers the question "Aw, how do I do that?" every time I get stuck...
Hope that appears in a future video!
1:14
1:48 DPDP - Duplicate, Pan, Delay, Pitch.
2:12 Duplication and panning. Right click > Duplicate Track. Tick Events and select repetition quantity.
3:02 Select the new tracks to send them to one bus, holding Ctrl, select New Stereo Bus as their output. Change colour of bus.
4:12 Set up the pan for the tracks.
4:50 Add small amount of delay to the duplicates so they don't all happen at the same time. Preferences > Customisation > Nudge. Set Nudge 1 absolute time to 10 millisecs and 24 for Nudge 2.
6:25 Press 3 and 6 on numpad to move it LATER, pressing 1 (and 4?) will move it earlier.
7:04 Add delays.
8:15 Listen test
8:48 Add pitch variation to duplicates using Groove Clip. In Properties panel, Groove Clip > Stretch to Tempo. Apply -3.0 value. And so on.
11:32 Blend the duplicates with the main vocal. Start with duplicates fader turned right down.
13:00 Vary it, play with delay times, and the pitch variation. Try on parts other than vocals. Make variations on EQs in the duplicates.
Not all heroes wear capes
I've heard Mike's voice so much lately through his videos that it's like family now đ
This guy is a born teacher. An uncommon skill.
I never noticed that you can simply change the pitch under "Groove clip". Thanks Mike!
A lot of these videos have bonus learning!
I learn something new every time I watch his videos! I thought I was a Sonor Guru! He is the real Guru!
Mike that was awesome . Those vocals went from just ok to huge and full of life . Thanks my friend . Also the shortcuts are very helpful .
Thank you for Cakewalk by BandLab - step-by-step tutorial - on this technique. I did like Warren Huart's' video, but yours was just perfect as I am a long time Cakewalk enthusiast and rookie at mixing all things DAW. You're the best, Mike.
your tutorials are really great, without any filling words, right straight to the points. Thank you for teaching CW.
Again another wonderful video from my new FAVORITE CAKEWALK GURU!!! THANKS AND KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK MIKE !!
Very much appreciate what you for for Cakewalk. I was one of the original cakewalk users (in the old days!). I was doing some recording almost a couple years ago and then got off it. So I needed desperately to review and also learn some new tricks. Your videos are a Godsend. If I can't figure it out from watching your videos, then I don't need to do it! Thanks again.
This is awesome, mate! Perfect explanation. Perfect delivery. Perfect tutorial!
PS: i like your speakers. Looks neat. That's the only thing lacking in my studio now.
Yes, I love them!! Thanks for watching:)
Iron mike, dropping some b15 knowledge bombs on us!
I love your videos and you've singlehandedly helped me get better at producing. The difference between my first effort and the 2nd effort after your vids was night and day.
Thanks my dude
We recorded an original Samba jazz song I wrote and I applied the technique to the lead flute. The flautist has a beautiful custom made wooden flute and this thickening technique just sounded absolutely gorgeous on it! Thanks again, Mike!
Mike, as usual, another great vid, well done!
Excellent Mike. Always loved Warren's video and this one just as good
Hey Mike: one of the best descriptions ever see in this trick !
This has to be one of your best tricks yet. Thanks a heap. As is normal very well done. Thanks Mike. Tony
Thanks Tony. I can't really take much credit, but I'm glad you found it's useful.
Super cool - no expensive plugins needed. Sounds superb!
It's September 2022, and I still reference back to your videos. Thank you so much brother.
Excellent video, I've often double tracked a vocal, but never experimented with minute pitch shifting. I'm away to try this now, thanks Mike, your a real star mate.
Have fun!
Awesome stuff as always - thanks Mike!!
Thanks Mike always a pleasure to watch your videos lots of information at a steady pace cheers from Austria
Likewise Paul, your comments are alw asys appreciated!
Absolutely amazing video and so well explained! Thanks so much, Mike :)
Fascinating. And explained so clearly. Thank you!
Mike, I tried your vocal thickening and it worked well. I add the differing EQs on each track as well. But I went a step further. I wanted to have a single vocal sound for the verses but wanted a "choir" effect for the chorus. So I routed all the duplicates to a VOX Dup bus and then used automation to have them come in and shine more during the chorus. Thanks so much buddy for the excellent content.
Love this! You always come with great cakewalk content! I'd love to see how to do some sidechaining in the future maybe?
Beautiful work, well-detailed. Thanks a whole lot.
I clicked on LIKE by mistake. I was looking for the INCREDIBLE button. Thanks Mike. Great to see you on Roberts chat with Warren last night.
Thank you a lot, thanks to your videos I made a perfect song for our beloved teacher in our school choire.
Mike, thank you for another very helpful and informative video.
Mike thank you my Bro. This is more than point Blank. This is Studio Engineer MASTER CLASS.
Been using the Nudge commands for a long time, but never knew that the Number keypad buttons controlled it, đ§ Will give it a try tomoz. đ
Thanks for the video(s), we are recording our first cd and thanks to all your tutorials it's working out đđ
Great video. Been wanting to know how to do this is cakewalk for ages. Thanks very much
Love this; so simple and it sounds great. Thanks!
Amazing teacher.... falling in love with cakewalk ...Thank you Mike
I have used a similar method using eqâs , just to fatten it up ( yes and the pitch and delay but processed using a tc helicon voice live rack ) thanks , keep up the great videos ( I learn something new every time )
Thanks for that, I canât wait to try it out, cheers.
Have fun!!
Excellent as always. Thank you.
Thanks for that! So helpful!
Very helpful - thank you very much!!
Very nice I will be trying this for sure... Thanks Mike...đ
This was great! Thanks for sharing.
I find you very helpful! My thanks and appreciation.
Awesome post! Thanks Mike for sharing your wonderful and clearly deep, deep knowledge of all things DAW :-)
Just discovered your channel ... great videos ... content and delivery 'top-shelf" ... thank you for sharing ... :)
That is so easy and a game changer without any extra money!!!!
This surely worked for me... Thanks
Spot on as always. I've been doing this manually on vocals and guitars forever and never used the nudge feature. Now I will (nudge nudge wink wink say no more)!! :) That'll be a huge time saver in my workflow. Thanks Mike.
Good and interesting video as many others from you.
Very good video, it helped me a lot, thanks
Interesting technique Mike - thanks!
Just learned how to use nudge and pitch! Great! These can be useful skills in more than this trick! Thanks!
Sweet! I think, I'll try this on a chorus of a song, I'm mixing!! Thank you Mike!
Great info , well done!
Brilliant - many thanks Mike. Best wishes from another Mike, in the UK.
Thanks for watching Mike!
This is an amazing video. Thank you
Great video Mike, I have used this effect on an audio book book my partner is creating and the results were great, surprisingly better than using a vocal doubling plug-in.
Agree. One thing I hate about plug ins, is you get a million people sounding all the same. I hear it in Pop and 'New Country', where every record sounds like they all used the same 4 plugins. I hear a band live, and like them, then hear the record and I can't listen to it. - Cheers
That was a great tutorial~Thanks~
Great video as always Mike. I intend to try this out on a female vocal that I have.
This is a more complex version of something I have played with from time to time. My approach changed the length and thus the timing to mimic 'doubling', as you never sing (or play etc) the song 100% exactly the same no matter how good you are.
I wasn't adding the pitch changes, so i want to try that. I also was not working with 4 pairs. Good info, even though i don't use Cake Walk, this approach will work in any DAW. I will definitely watch other videos for tips and tricks that are universal in general. Always a good day when I learn something new. - Cheers
Will the shortcuts work with the regular numbers? i dont have a numpad unfortunately lol Great video! Been trying to up my engineering to release better music and do everything myself, and this channel definitely helps.
great tutorial!
Hey Mike, your videos have been so helpful as I've just started learning how to use DAWs. I was wondering how the results of this technique compare to using the vocal doubler settings in the Cakewalk vocal plug in. Thanks
Very Helpful thank you so much!!!
Great trick! I'm going to try that in my next song! And yes, I'm a big Warren Huart fan too!
Good luck! Make it your own, experimentation with this s fun.
Thanks Mike, I'm hoping this will work well with my niece's Vocals. Will give this a go later đ
Thank's 4 all man!!
Many thanks! Great tip / help
My absolute pleasure:)
must admit you've done our old sonar a lot of good the these video's mate
Thank you Mike once again.
AMAZING explaned BRO thanks so much much MASTER
Thanks! Great tip!
I also named the vocal dups as follow Vox P3 (positive 3 to get 10 milliseconds) and M3 (minus 3 to get 10 milliseconds) and so on P6 M6 P9 M9. I had accidently put the wrong vocals in and I was able to delete and replace and then it was easy to add the thickening technique.
Loved Mike .. thanks a million đ
Thank you!
Wow...Fab video once gain.....Vox Thickening. Awesome. ..âïžâïžâïžâïžâïžđžđ§
Great stuff
Awesome tricks, Mike, and by the way, pls tell the lady she has a beautiful voice, and I love the tune, as well.
i like tha guy's lessons buT HiS voice puts me in a hypnosis ,.,still keep RockIn bruH much appreciated đ€
I love your channel. You are a great teacher and your productions are professional. I would like to make a video request... How to do gang vocals with only one person.
Very good video once again, thanks a lot! Funny enough, I've read about this delay/pitch trick on vocals in a mixing book (written by Uli Eisner) from the analog days and used it on my very first projects back in the early 2000s (on a Pentium 2, mind you...). It's a decent alternative to double tracked vocals in case the singer has trouble nailing down two tight tracks (which I was never really capable of...). So I highly appreciate the reminder to experiment with that technique again in upcoming projects!
Very interesting, thanks for sharing!
Very helpful video
I am going to do this on sax đ·. Great video
First off Mike, your tutorials are freaking awesome! I have learned so much in just the couple of weeks that I have been subscribed and wish to someday be as efficient as you are.
I have a question regarding microphones, I have an MXL 990 and 991 condenser mic pack I purchased from Guitar Center years ago and haven't really used much because I have a hard time MAKING time for recording. My question/problem is that on a few of my vocal recordings, during playback, sound as if I have used a pitch shift and makes my voice almost shrill and quite thin. My recording booth is a small closet that I have added sound dampening padding to but I'm not sure if the space is just too small and still getting bouncing sounds or is my voice really that "off-sounding"? From different people I have been told that my vocals are smooth and strong but from what I am hearing, I think people are just trying to make me feel better. Can you make a video that shows more in depth, how to set vocal levels and any tips on getting that perfect track recorded.
Much appreciation and thanx for taking the time. đ€đ”âđ«đ
This video is very is really helpful
Thanks for your lessons from Belarus!
sounds great mike! question...do you always have to have 8 duplicates for it to work or can you use 2, 4, 6 as long as its a even #? does izotope vocal doubler (already have) do this just as well? also the varying of the pitches is similar to a guitar trick of a detune effect of say +2 on the left and -2 on the right
Itâs a great technique, I have been using Waves Doubler, but Iâm going to give this a go on my next song. Warren gave a great demo, but this is made it clearer using it through Cakewalk and steps are relevant to the use of program.
Yes, if nothing else, it's just a fun experiment where we learn about what's happening.
@@CreativeSauce That's the absolute truth, Mr. Snake...
awesome!!!!
Superb!!!! Thanks for the video.. May i ask somethhing, after these mixings, how will i master it??? May you demonstrate it sir?? Thanks sir
I really love your videos. Iâve been using cakewalk for many years but
I always find out something new with these videos. I asked a few months ago if you could make a video on using MCU Pro with two extensions? I notice you have one? One thing Iâm puzzled about is the last update by cakewalk stopped the device from working? No matter have ?I search thru the preferences
I canât seem to get it to work anymore? Please respond
Stan
Neat, didn't know about that nudge thingy :D
Ummm, me too until a few days ago!
Tremendously helpful love u Mike.....I'd also like to see a vocoder tutorial from you for cakewalk.....TAL vocoder to be precise
This is fabulous! It is a lesson on the wall of sound technique.
Are there different versions for guitar, bass, drums and overall mix?
Thanks boss i Appreciate it
I'm hooked on these Cakewalk demos Mike!! THANK YOU!! I've run into trouble using Groove Clip because I split my tracks a lot to correct mistakes. When I click on 'stretch to tempo', I get an error about hidden data beyond slip points. I hit OK but the error appears multiple times and then the session bombs out. Any tips on working with split clips?
Hello Mike
Thank you for your videos. I am just starting with Mixing and DAW. I have one question. In a workflow, where should I place vocal thickening? Should I apply this after applying all other effects on the voice track?
Very interesting and educational..
