    I definitely agree on this being the best bang for the buck under $10k. Not only is it less expensive then the E90 335i, but you avoid the Turbo, Injector, Fuel Pump, Intake, and other know issues with the N54 engine. (Though they are a major hoot to drive).
    I think a great combo for longevity is this E90 + N52B30 + 6MT + RWD. A lot less to go wrong w/o the Auto transmission, AWD, or a turbo.
    Also, a model with all the options will not be that much different in price now than a base model. (sport suspension / seats / steering + comfort upgrades )

      ChewbaccaFetus the speedo only goes up to 160. You can disable the governor but even if you hit the 160 mark, you aren't going 160, probably more like 145-150.
      With mods+a tune, however, you can increase the rev limiter and increase the hp by a decent amount. You may be able to get 165 then but it'd be pretty hard

    Completely agree - having owned a car with the n54 engine, it was fast and fun but incredibly complex and expensive to maintain. Traded it a couple of years ago for a n52 car - yes it is slower but much more reliable, much less complex, easy to work on and still a blast to drive.

    I love my 2007 328i (also in montego blue metallic) so much that...this is probably the 10th time I've watched this video. You really nailed everything in this video. After 10 years of ownership it has 120k miles and still makes me giddy every time I drive it, and my maintenance/repair costs are STILL lower than for a new Honda Accord. Amazingly, I haven't had to do the water pump, but gaskets, window regulators, etc. Some guys on the forums have gotten more than 400k miles out of these cars. Amazing.
    I owned a 550i, which was awesome, but I love everything about this car for what it is. So much that I got a 2012 X3 because I love, love, love the N52 engine.
    Great vid!

    • @robchiofalo6138
      @robchiofalo6138 Před 3 lety

      How much in repair cost would you say over the 10 years?

    • @bobsmockus
      @bobsmockus Před 2 lety

      @@robchiofalo6138 So I probably should have said "my ownership costs" instead of "maintenance/repair costs." I tracked everything with the car. The total I paid to own it was about $17k over 10 years. Yes, that's still a lot, but it comes out to $1700/yr. That includes 2 full brake/rotor jobs, 2 spark plug changes and coils, 2 battery changes, 3 sets of tires, all the gaskets (oil pan, oil filter housing, valve cover), oil/brake fluid/coolant changes, etc which I'd call maintenance rather than repair. Debatable on the gaskets...
      That also factors in me paying dealers for the first 5 years. If it wasn't for that, I'd guess the total cost would be 30-50% lower. I also did a LOT of preventative maintenance because I planned to keep the car forever, but an unexpected move made me sell it. Sold it at 105k miles, now it's at 140k and still going strong.
      I now have an X3 with the exact same engine and I do all the routine stuff myself. Just did a ton of work for about $1000 that would have cost me $7000 at the dealer.

    Agreed! Bought my euro 325i 06 (closest to North American 328i) for $ 14k three years ago with 49k miles on it, probably worth around $10k now (in Sweden) with 62k miles. Still almost feels like new :) And it's getting time to replace suspension components as preventive maintenance - that's fun too. I've only replaced the air mass meter ($ ~160) and that's the only fault it has had until now.

Not mad at the car, pissed that the last owner failed to maintain the vehicle and treated it like a damn yugo. I know I'll have to invest a bit more BUT she's worth it, i can't find a new domestic car with her power or performance for what I paid for her. Maintain your rides and they'll last. I resonate with so many aspects of this video! I've owned cars from nearly ever major car maker, including sports cars ranging from a Mazda Miata to a Porsche 928. My E90 328xi is my overall favorite of the bunch. In fact, if I could only pick one car I had to drive the rest of my life, it would be my car with a slightly different option package and maybe a super-charger thrown on for some fun. The wild thing is, that could easily be had for under $20k all-in.
    It's a 50/50 balance car with excellent handling. In that way, it reminds me of a blend of my Miata and Porsche (also 50/50 weight ratio cars) but in a passenger sedan. I love the styling of the car. It is pretty much timeless, IMO. And the engine.... absolutely yes on the buttery smooth. I agree on the transmission. That's one thing I'd change (as I have the manual). Not one of my favorite stick-shift cars I've owned. I think a lot of that is the clutch, though. I'm considering playing with those spacers that go under on the floor. I think it engages too far out. Anyway, even after 3 years, I feel like I'm inconsistent with the clutch... which has never happened with my past cars (all but a couple have been manual).
    I'd also correct people when they talk about reliability. Most actually mean maintenance. Few cars these days are unreliable (like typically break down, leaving one stranded). A used E90, even quite used, is still very reliable. I'm very close to 200k miles (over 300k km), and I wouldn't hesitate jumping in it and driving across the country (and Canada is a BIG place).
    I've owned it for 3 years now, and it hasn't broken down at all (knock on wood). Now, I have had to fix a couple of those darned oil seals. I've had to replace the shocks/struts. I had to replace a front drive-shaft. I've had to replace that notorious water pump. I've had to do brakes. I'm sure that cost more than it would have to do similar work on a Toyota, but I doubt given the age/milage, the Toyota wouldn't need similar work done, it would just cost less. (I'd guess maybe 1.5x to 2.5x more for a BMW.) But, I got the car for $4200 and some people mistake it for new. It just needed a few fixes. (I need to add it up, but maybe ~$12k in it overall so far? That's not so bad considering the nice ride I enjoy each day.)

      I'll keep my response short n simple, AMEN👍👍👍👍😁 LOVE MY 2007 328XI, especially with the muffler n resonator delete, it sounds unbelievably sick, the noise that 3.0 N/A engine puts out is crazy for a V6, and I didnt even put the headers or a new intake yet lol..all I got is a K&N air filter and the ROAR PEDAL throttle control, which by the way I highly recommend on this car, for 159$$ your not gonna find another MOD, that really wakes up your car, concerning acceleration and sound, it makes all the difference, definitely makes your car faster 0 to 60, factory 6.3 secs , modded with ROAR PEDAL 5.7 ish secs ,big difference race wise, trust me especially with a manual, I do suggest removing the rev limiter when you install a throttle control..but I know there is a lot of cars faster in this class, but concerning the whole package, as far as handling, pick up, braking, comfort, n sound if you have exhaust modded, I'll take on anyone on a windy, hilly mountain road, n I'll most likely gap you easily 👍👍love my 32 328xi, plan to always have one as a daily, n the M4 only for special occasions lol..😁👍👍👍💪💪🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪🚘🚘🚘

    To anyone looking into getting one, I’d strongly suggest not getting the AWD model unless you REALLY need it. I get by with a RWD model in Michigan with some good tires. The AWD system is a liability in these cars, meaning that it just adds a bunch of weight, complication, and potential maintenance headaches. If you have to do a WP/thermostat job, it makes it much more difficult.

    Hello guys, i want to ask something because i am starting to appreciate more and more my e90. As i said i have an e90, 320d remapped and its around 200 hp, the car is reasonable fast (for me) it has that sharp feeling (as much as 4 cylinder can get u ) and i am enjoying it . My father bought an e60 530d (manual) i drove it a few times on highways, city streets etc. And the feeling it gives u its good but i realized its too smoooth for my type of driving. I am watching forward (in 2-3 years) to get an f30 (328i or 330d u can say pros and cons of both and ur experiences ) As every ''car boy'' i am watching car sites, prices and info about the car, imaging driving it one day, but from what i am seeing, it may have not have a happy end. From what i see steering wheel feels not so connected (what i rly dislike ) car is bigger etc, etc. I dont want to dream for sth, then get it and be disappointed and want my e90 back. So from some1 driving it (preferably liking that stiff drive experiences) is that the BMW we 3series fans want ?

Runs, and natural aspirated motor, M-Sport pak., 3 stage manifold a tune... And gone. Also the car is well built and will give a thrill that no other car in the regular market can do. You are exactly right when you say I paid $6995 for a $45,000 car, and there is a lot more than 1/6 of the car left. My car was original owner, always serviced at dealer, clean CarFax, never wrecked, water pump and fuel injectors already replaced. And it is so much fun to drive.
