- Building any business requires infrastructure. To the casual observer, this is a boring, invisible, mindless sort of thing. To the business owner, it's the very LIFE of the business. Here's a peek how that looks in a small nursery.

I feel like a jerk saying this after it's filled in but I ran water and electricity underground. I got advice to get a cheap roll of caution tape. Full in the trench halfway, run the tape the rest of the way and then fill the rest of it. If anyone is digging but doesn't know or can't exactly remember where it was they'll dig out that caution tape and know they're on top of something breakable.
You can drive some metal rods along the path of your pipe line and find later with metal detector. If you need electric that far back go overhead might want to use your power company that's alot of distance equals voltage drop
I have an aerial map with everything marked on it. As I ad things, I put them on the map
It’s a great idea
Your right its always investing in the nursery business never ends
To many ppl don’t see the sweat and tears it takes to get where u wanna be !!
And almost never see stress behind the smile of a small business owner keep grinding plant family ! 🤙🏼💪🏼💪🏼
I almost watched all of your videos ( some several times) since I watched the first video two months ago, thank you for sharing your experience with us! 💐👍
Glad you like them! thank you for being here
Thanks Mr. Craig!
wow! That thing gets the job done!! Everything looks great!
As always sage advice! You have to really look long term and keep building! Love that you are always expanding! 👍🌲🙏🏼
Yes! Thank you!
Once again, solid wisdom! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Im really excited to see your nursery grow. Ive watched for several years. I have a small nursery that if probably on the size of your old space in TN. For me it's a fun retirement business. I envy the pace you have. I have learned a great deal from watching you and love to see your growth. Keep em coming.
Thanks for watching!
It occurs to me that you could benefit at this point from a Gator, or other small flat bed vehicle, so that you can move plants, materials, and people between the front and back facilities rapidly.
It occurs to me too. Once we get through this winter on the money we have saved and we get sales rolling in the Spring, hopefully something like that can happen. In the mean time, I've got a good pair of walking boots that get me back and forth OK.
Appreciate your clear and comprehensive content. Many thanks.
My pleasure!
Your last thoughts in this video I thought were great advice.
Thanks - that’s really what I hoped the takeaway would be for viewers
Another great video, Craig. Running into this right now, growing tropicals in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. Bigger greenhouse, bigger high-output heater, dehumidifiers, fans, greenhouse insulation, heat mats, benches, gravel; all “boring” stuff.
But, the more infrastructure in your nursery, the less work involved in directly keeping everything alive and growing when it TRULY matters. Just like your 401k analogy, that infrastructure has to be a priority before growing anything at some sort of scale down the road.
Appreciate your consistent, quality videos that showcase the back-end of nursery work. Really good stuff. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours also!
Congratulations on the new area!
Yes, thank you
It;s always useful information. Thanks, Homie!
Great!
They are doing a great job covering the pipe! Way to go!!
I think so too!
No those are super useful informations. Thanks. God bless.
Thank you!
Nothing beats the right tool. I would trench a few more areas just in case even if you're not going to use the space right now. Why not. I get that you have to grow in order too grow. But keep in mind that you don't want to become a servant to the plants. Then you'll never find time for yo
This was a good one
So glad!
Indeed!
Love your videos
Appreciate you watching!!
Hi I like your video
Nice! ❤
Glad you like it!
So Whalen you guys first purchased the property, did you take a look at it and plan it out ahead of time? Or are you just winging it? Hey that digger would come in handy for digging rows to plant grow out parent plants. Ahahahaa I was wondering about the filling in part, I’d say they handled it well 👌🏻 thanks for your time and knowledge guys, much appreciated.
No, we’re just figuring it out as we gi
I find all your videos a valuable I've picked up ideas and tips by watching. I've mentioned before I grown veggies fruit trees and berries There on irrigation Do you have any problems by overhead watering your nursery plants like flowers or some of the more delicate ones ?
So far I have not had any issues.
@@savvydirtfarmer
Thanks for replying I'm going to try overhead watering I've just been a little Leary Thanks
Craig, why did you flip the weed barrier over? Did it only have tge lines on one side🤔 Excellent video as always.
Foundation part most important, especially when you look long term.👍
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family 🍂🦃🍁🤗
I flipped it because the water line needed to go right where it was laying. I'm going to re-work that area at some point and use it to get make my propagation setup a whole lot better and less thrown together.
Great job. Was that 1.5 inch pipe? Thats a long run. Do you have a link to where you purchased you sprinkler heads and ground cloth? Is that 3.2 ground cloth
1.5 yes. Sprinkler at cheap sprinklers.com, ground cover, check out Amazon store. Thx
Will you build hoop houses in the new area?
As needed
Great job once again. Any live Christmas trees or cut trees this year? Just a thought.🎄🎄🎄🎄 Do christmas trees even survive that far south in the ground? Maybe a terrible idea. Sorry
I have a really nice Christmas tree farm about 1 mile away. Not interested in that.
That makes total sense. Keep up the great job. Little by little. Doing great. 👍
Are you evening out the surface before you place ground cover in the field?
No. I just mowed the grass down to a couple inches tall and put the cover down. It takes a few weeks but it’ll settle down nicelt
Just wondering, how much do box stores sell poinsettia in your town?
Wait till they go on sale, load up by the trailer load, propagate for next year :)
I don't have a greenhouse.
Outstanding info! Thank you so much.....
I haven't watched all you videos yet, but do you have one on inventory or record keeping/ sales tickets? I assume you have to charge sales tax?
No need to keep inventory unless you've got so many plants you can't keep up with what has sold and what hasn't. I use a Square Terminal... it keeps all sales records. I do collect sales tax... that's a bit nuanced and it varies by state. Some states don't require you to collect on items you grow, like farmers selling hay or calves... checck with your dept of revenue and or dept of ag websites and make some phone calls.
How much is your water bill per month ?
Check this one out - I did a full breakdown How much does it cost to irrigate 10,000 plants?

I see her itty, bitty camper/house.
It’s finished- she did a great job!
@@savvydirtfarmer She sure did.
I just turn the grinch backwards with the chain in the air and let the trencher push the dirt back over the pipe. Don’t know if that is some advice you want or not just thought I’d throw that in there.
