      This week I am discovering that I have Florida native blueberries all over my property and figuring out the best way to pot them up and sell or trade them with nurseries open to the public. I am putting in commercial varieties of blue berries for myself but keeping some of the natives to see if I can cross them that way I have commercial quality berries with plants that have natural selection rooting qualities that allow plants to thrive in this unique soil as well as climate. I am also dividing up my seedling dragon fruit and seeing if they are ready to be solar hardened. They are about a year old and went through a big move. They were grown in large quantities crammed in tiny pots. Lived indoors for 10 months and the 2 months outdoors they endured some harsh conditions and neglect. They were not a priority plant and I expected them to die but they survived so I figured I would start giving them their own pots and see if they can thrive outside year round in zone 9a. I have hundreds of them and I suspect only some can handle winter. I also putted up citrus from seed to use as a perimeter hedge. I want a thorny hedge plant for this and my Chinese Hollie’s I used in the past will not thrive here. I took some softwood cuttings of various plants to see what roots this time of year. Maybe 3 of every plant I had. This is just for my own education and then next spring I know what I need to prep for. I am dealing with different plants as this is my first year in Florida. Big learning curve moving from zone 7 to zone 9 after growing up in zone 5 or 6

    I love your channel and I passed it onto my sister and her husband . We’re wanting to start a small nursery, I have ten Acres and my sister has twelve. Here in 7b we have hot dry summers and water has been a problem because we’re on water well, we bought four 10,000 gallon water tanks and collecting rain water off our shop roof, they fill up quite easily. So I’m ready to give this a try. We’re completely ran by Solar energy, so I believe things are on my side. I’ve gardened for years and I love to propagate plants. My successes rates are higher in things like succulents, hydrangeas, Crêpe myrtles. This channel is more help than you can imagine. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

    Craig, You two had me smiling all thru this one. Great talk. One question for you. How to you keep pests away? Ants,worms,grubs,,in pots. White flys,Japanese beetles . Do you hire a spray ? Up potting Forsythe today, about 300. Your advice on pine fines an compost for potting mix,seems to be working. Im retired an this is more a hobby,learned to propragate an just love seeing roots to the point where there's well over 3k plants. More than we'll ever plant in our 2 acre lot. I did order wholesale for the first time this year. Accidentally bought blueberries for zone 8-9. Ugh I'm zone 5. But I have been selling on ebay and etsy. I have made my money back on them. Bought other plants also wholesale. I live 8 miles from town, I imagine that slows my sales, however, I think I've about covered my out of pocket expenses so far and was able to expand my perennial food for myself and 2 of my kids. I'm working on cuttings for things like grapes, lilac and hydrangeas this year. I did divide some cultivated daylilies and will sell them as well in a few weeks. I have a question. When you do your plant sales, do you include tax in your plant price? Still learning, thank you for help!

    • @savvydirtfarmer
      @savvydirtfarmer  Před 2 lety +1

      I do not. In my state, nursery laws fall under the laws of the department of agriculture. If I grow a product myself, whether it is a calf, hay, or plants, no sales tax is required. If I am buying grown plants and "flipping" them quickly, tax is required, since I didn't grow them. That's MY state, and of course, laws vary by state.

    New suber here. What do you do if the tap root grows through the ground cover? I have heard that most field grown plant have their tap roots cut. SOOOOO, if the plant's tap root grows through the ground cover and I have to cut the tap root, is that plant no good?
    Also, what are your thoughts on the strength of the plant in regards to "cutting" hairy roots and true seed tap root roots?

    • @savvydirtfarmer
      @savvydirtfarmer  Před 2 lety

      Plants do occasionally grow through the ground cover, but most are very slow to do so. In late fall through winter, you can just pull them hard enough to rip the roots and it won't hurt them a but. Other times? Do what you gotta do... they can't stay like that and the longer they root, the worse they'll be to move later. All in all, it's not even a problem worth mentioning because I spend so little time dealing with it. I don't ever recall killing a plant because of it being rooted through the ground cover - and I've cut a LOT of roots! Tap roots? I really don't know. Whatever is there, I cut it if it's going through the ground cover.

      Very few plants that are container grown will grow a tap root. They adapt by growing a more fibrous root system. This would mainly be a concern for deciduous trees.

      A nursery certificate (or something similar) from your state's dept of agriculture is required to legally sell plants.

      Anyone legally selling plants has to have a nursery certificate from yout state dept of agriculture. Very easy to get. Beyond that? Totally dependent on your local ordinances, etc.
