I planted 29 seedlings the 2nd summer, I lost 9. These bushes need lots of water the first 2 years
I'm from Andalusia Alabama. I know exactly what you're saying! Lol thank you so much for sharing 😊
How long do you water your plants with the sprinkler? Especially in the heat. Another great video!
Usually 12 minutes... but that will vary GREATLY depending on your water pressure.
@@savvydirtfarmer thank you. That's very true. But I've been overwatering at 30 minutes.
@@mariavelikonja3317 If you're overwatering at 30, cut it back to 20 for a few days and see how that does. Should be fairly easy to get straightened out.
Thanks, I appreciate the video. Anything wrong with using just plain sawdust as a potting mix? I know it varies a lot. The stuff I have is fine but not a superfine powdery dust. It drains quickly when I do a drainage test (in a few seconds) and holds moisture. Of all the videos on youtube about potting mix, nobody seems to use sawdust. I wonder why? It's cheap and readily available. Am I missing something?
If I had it readily available, I'd try it. Likely problem is lack of nitrogen - sawdust would be high in carbon. Is the sawdust from dry, older wood, or green wood? That would likely make a huge difference, as green wood would not work, I wouldn't think. Sawdust mixed with pine bark, maybe??? Experiment with it and see.
💚💚
I just dug mine out and cut into the mud with a careful eye, holta's started growing back within 8 days with a little tomorite and All Purpose feed along the way - quite incredible!
Thanks!
Wow, awesome green house and video. Very detailed. Great idea on doing gadget to bend the poles and on doing the shade cloth versus plastic. Thank you for sharing. Love it.
So nice of you - thanks!
So I am disabled. Love propagating. I enjoy doing tree form plants. I have wanted to sell some for extra money for years . I can't do a full sized nursery . Would it to be worth it to specialize in tree form plants? I need something as disability isn't enouph. Also it gives me something to do. I am mostly blind.
You don't need a "full sized nursery." You need pint sized nursery - a you sized nursery - one you can handle. Could be a couple hundred square feet or smaller and you can make more from that space than you might think if you manage it correctly. You can make specialization work; you can make variety work.
Think it’s capable of about 10-12 hours of work per week. Fence rows mainly
Great video and thanks for the information. One question though? Should the cuttings be placed in full sun or in the shade, while waiting for them to take root?
Definitely shade... under a tree, under a shade cloth, whatever you can make work. Doesn't need to be 100% shade
Thank You! Exactly what I needed to see!
Buddy I guess you never heard a worm castings are you trying to tell me that you're still using synthetic fertilizer when there's something called worm castings something that I produce so you can grow organically synthetic fertilizer is no way to go we have to get away from synthetic fertilizers they kill everything that's good about growing your plants are going to be prone to diseases because you're not going to have the microbial and fungi web that you need to grow really good food naturally all you need is organic compost and some worm castings to fire up the microbial process you should probably look into it sir everyone needs to get away from synthetic fertilizers there's no need for it nature naturally produces everything plants need to survive all you need is organic matter and some worms for your plants to thrive your terpenes will be way higher because the plants will get the proper nutrients they need with the help of the microbes and the symbiotic relationship between them and the plants
Love! Just love watching your nursery progress! Great job!
What do you do with them over the winter?
Nothing - they sit out in the weather.
Hey where did you get the misters at? Thanks
Thank you!! Some of my panicle hydrangeas are setting bud…does that matter? I’d like to try at this time of year. I’ve had good success with sticking late cuttings near winter time…totally hands off.

I thought green emeralds don’t grow more than 14 feet. This is obviously bigger then that
Yeah, these were exceptionally tall... about 15'. Very mature.
Does the shade house need to be that tall?
The wider it is, it's going to be taller. Otherwise, it's going to be flat across the top... which is doable as well. You can design any number of ways. I like the height because I occasionally have trees that are 8+' tall.
I have my plants out the 1st week of March and my sales end the last week of May. It's been in the mid hundreds. Today it was 113. I still don't have the timing down or annuals to bloom I'm still trying to learn that one
I love hydrangeas & roses and I want endless amounts of each I think I didnt mist enough before
I think I over fertilized. My trees are turning yellow by the root and leaves are falling. If I did over fertilize, any suggestions on how to save the plants? They’re in trade gallon pots.
Nothing to do at this point. ONLY use slow release/time release fertilizer with any plant in any container.
Great video! Thanks for sharing important info like this
When can you do propagate sweetbay magnolia . softwood cutting or last year wood? Thanks
I haven’t tried, but I would think softwood cuttings, done right about now, would do well
Timing has been crazy for me this year! Native plants just won’t germinate when you want/need them to. This fall, I will start the stratification MUCH earlier, and I will stratify three different ways to ensure germination somewhere between the three! Natives grow more slowly than regular plants, I think, too.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise with all of us!! Much appreciated!!
Glad it was helpful!
looking healthy and fit :)
Thank you! Still much work to do and maintain.
You are a Green Giant life saver! Thank you x 1 billion. Can this propogation be used for cedar trees also?
Not sure - lots of cedar varieties. But can guarantee it won’t hurt a thing to try.
I just ordered some 3 ft Green Giant Thuja. It is mid-June here in southeast Michigan, zone 6. Should I wait until Fall to plant them? In the winter, should I wrap them?
I’d plant now and keep well watered.

A very important video! It links into my comment from last week. I learned A LOT this year. I tried cannas and mums for the first time this year.. Cannas look great but, they needed to be in full bloom 4 weeks ago…. I started my mums way too early and they are blooming in the spring and not fall.. This is how we learn! I plan on building a greenhouse this winter. It should be a game changer when I am getting my plants to in bloom for the spring season.. Sorry I am missing your last weekend sale. Enjoy that recliner and tall glass of iced tea this afternoon. God bless you and your family! Thank you for putting your adventure here for us all to see and learn from!
We had very late frosts in parts of NJ, so hard to predict!
Yes!! Especially in the “in between” season.
Great advice!
saturday sales only in july & august always late buyers
every thing with a bloom sells
Generally very much true!
a nursery should never fully close cut back hours in summer & winter
According to whom?
@@savvydirtfarmerI live nextdoor to a nursery that is open all year long. But I live in southern California.
@@denniskillian8714 nice!

We had the same experience with our annuals/veggies. The 2 days before opening we had temps around 35 - had to take every single tray into the basement - what a pain! We had about 40 trays. We did save them all, so it was worth it.
It sure is a lot of work and the timing sneaks up on you! Open part of the year but a 12 month a year job! Great video!
Even when you think you know everything there is always temperature changes water Sun and animals and other variable yes you can start to early with indoor seeds. Know your plants and what they do . That is why a test outdoor garden space for plants instead of throwing them out is great to have. At least you found your wholesaler in that time. There is always a silver lining or as I say turning lemons into lemonade. Keep up the great work
Just can’t keep all the leftovers. A few, or even a few dozen? Sure. But hundreds or even a thousand? No way.
Facebook is a waste of time & energy. Is this still available??? I see it's $20 would you take $3 for it?? As soon as the new wears off Facebook will become your problem. No thanks!!
What advertising media do you use that consistently gets a 30:1 return on your advertising investment? I'll gladly use it instead.
I’ve found it to be a good place for those of us just getting started to sell plants and build a customer base, until we get our website up and running. Yes, half the replies are not serious. I don’t take it personally and am always polite.
It could be your area. Marketplace has been phenomenal for me. I get a few 'is it available', and I just have a nice paragraph that I copy/paste in as a response. Sometimes that's it, and other times we engage in dialogue and they come out and buy things. I also have not had anyone haggle on price. But then again, I'm priced at $10.95, which is a great deal for my area. What has been a waste of time is all the buy/sell/free groups - those are the bargain hunters and I stay away from those. I do engage in the gardening groups.
It sounds like you are getting a grasp on the nursery business. You guys are awesome to see running a family business.
Definitely getting a grasp. Definitely have A LOT to learn, still.
Good morning! Love the knowledge you always give us consistently every week! Keep doing you!
Thank you! Will do!
What percentage shade cloth are you using? Here in Kansas my ground temp was 130 in my garden area surface. below the wood chips it was 74. Do you think I should use the white material.
About 50%. I've never used white. It has advantages, but wouldn't sweat using one of the other.
I had problems with cucumbers during the drought last year and planted three Beit Alpha plants this year. I need a bucket to harvest them...DAILY!
Good morning.
